A budget-wireless class also exists — EagleView, for example, sells genuinely wireless own-hotspot probes in the $2,600–$3,200 range (verified on its official store, July 2026) — and the tether test applies to those exactly the same way: find the data link before you trust the label.

Clarius went wireless before it was fashionable and it shows in the details: Wi-Fi Direct on the 5 GHz band with Bluetooth handling discovery, a drop-in charging dock that turns the 90-minute fast charge into a grab-and-go routine, and the widest wireless lineup in the category — more than ten specialty heads from a 308-gram convex to a 20 MHz ultra-high-frequency linear, backed by the deepest software stack in the wireless camp (T-Mode anatomy visualization, voice control, specialty AI). The catch is the software model, and it moved in 2026: the membership is now called Clarius Essentials — $695 a year or a $2,500 one-time license — with the L15 HD3 at $3,795 bare or $4,490 bundled with a year of Essentials (live store figures, July 11, 2026; Clarius’s own membership-information page still shows the older $595 rate, so confirm at quote). At 205 grams, the Vscan Air CL is the lightest device in this guide, and GE’s support documentation is refreshingly exact about everything: 50 minutes of continuous scanning measured at an 80/20 B-mode-to-color mix, a 75-minute recharge from 10 to 90 percent, and explicit confirmation that scanning needs no internet connection at all. The dual-head design puts a curved array on one end and a linear on the other, so one flip covers deep and superficial work. It also charges on a wireless pad — kept outside the patient environment, as GE specifies. The TE Air’s stated 90-to-120-minute scan time is the strongest manufacturer-published figure in the category, and its “Air Capsule” is quietly brilliant: the protective case doubles as a portable wireless charger, taking the probe from empty to 90 percent in about 35 minutes while it sits in your bag. Mindray markets it for ambulances and helicopters precisely because the probe’s self-made hotspot needs nothing from the environment. The smallest brand here, and the one with the cleverest answer to battery anxiety: the Vave battery is swappable. Where every other wireless probe sends you to a charger when it runs down, Vave lets you click in a charged spare and keep scanning — which is why the company publishes “a full clinical shift (and beyond)” instead of a minutes figure. We print that phrasing rather than inventing a number, and the bar for Vave in our tether-test chart above stays honestly empty. The newer Universal Probe ($4,400) covers deep and shallow imaging in one head, the app is lifetime-free with no subscription, and the standard warranty runs 36 months — a stronger ownership case than the brand’s size suggests. The tradeoff is the small-vendor calculus: a thinner accessory ecosystem and shorter track record than GE or Mindray.

Lumify is the honest extreme of corded design: Philips put no battery in the transducer at all. On Android the probe draws power from your phone down the same detachable cable that carries the image — up to 7.5 hours of ongoing scanning per Philips, with never a probe sitting forgotten on a charger; the iOS configuration adds a separate Lumify Power Module rated about 2.5 hours. For high-volume Android days that is a genuine argument, and we make it fairly in the guardrail section above. Kosmos sits at the console end of the handheld spectrum: the Torso-One probe (280 g with its cable) plugs into your phone by USB-C or into EchoNous’s own Bridge tablet by PCIe, and the system’s identity is cardiac depth: uniquely in this guide it carries full cardiac Doppler — PW, CW, and TDI — alongside automatic view labeling and guided workflows aimed at training programs and standardized exams. The Bridge configuration reads more like a miniature cart than a pocket probe, which is exactly what some departments want: a dedicated screen nobody’s personal phone has to provide. Like Lumify, it is quote-only in the US and corded by design — a deliberate choice for bandwidth and power, not an oversight.
The mechanism
How the wireless link actually works
The six wireless systems in the classification above solve the same problem the same way: the probe is its own network. It broadcasts a private Wi-Fi signal — Clarius and GE use Wi-Fi Direct on 5 GHz, Mindray and Suresult create a probe hotspot — and your phone or tablet joins that network the way it would join any other. Bluetooth handles the initial handshake on some brands (Clarius, GE), then hands off to Wi-Fi for the image stream, because ultrasound video needs far more bandwidth than Bluetooth can carry.
Three practical consequences follow. First, no internet and no hospital network are required — GE’s support documentation is explicit that the Vscan Air scans without any internet connection, and Mindray markets the TE Air for ambulances and helicopters for the same reason. Second, pairing is a real workflow step: the first connection takes a minute of settings, and a shared clinic device needs a re-pair when it changes hands. Third, on single-radio designs the phone’s Wi-Fi may be occupied by the probe while scanning — worth checking per model if your workflow uploads to PACS mid-exam.
The correction this category needs
The battery trap: why corded probes get called wireless
The single most common error in handheld ultrasound roundups is calling the Butterfly iQ3 wireless. It is not. Butterfly’s own spec sheet lists a 2,220 mAh onboard battery and a swappable USB-C or Lightning cable — the battery powers the transducer, but every frame you see travels down that cable. The Exo Iris repeats the pattern with a twist: onboard battery, an optional wireless charging pad — and a “Duo Cable” that the image still requires. A charging pad is not a data link.
Philips Lumify is the mirror image, and honest about it: the transducer has no battery at all. On Android it draws power from your phone through the cable — up to 7.5 hours of scanning per Philips, with no probe to forget on a charger. On iOS, Philips adds a separate Lumify Power Module rated about 2.5 hours, swappable for longer sessions. Either way it is a legitimate design choice, not a flaw. It is just not wireless.
The rule that never fails: find the spec line for the data link. If a cable appears anywhere between probe and screen, the device is corded — whatever the marketing page calls it.

- Quote-only. Philips Lumify and EchoNous Kosmos publish no U.S. list price — both are corded anyway, so they compete in this category only if the cable suits you.
