Sonosite invented the hand-carried ultrasound class under a 1990s DARPA grant. In 2026, its own cost-education page defines the handheld category with six devices — and not one of them is a Sonosite. Here is what the company actually sells, what it retired, and what fills the gap.

Quick Answer

Sonosite does not sell a general-purpose handheld ultrasound in 2026. What a search for a Sonosite handheld ultrasound actually finds in the 2026 catalogue is six systems — iLOOK, LX, ST, MT, PX and SII-VA — and every one of them is a cart or stand system, a clamshell portable, or a vascular-access configuration. None is a pocket scanner that turns a phone or tablet into the display.

The clearest confirmation comes from Sonosite itself: its own cost-education page defines a category called “Handheld Ultrasound Machines” and gives its examples as “Butterfly iQ3, Clarius, GE Vscan Air CL/SL, Mindray TE Air, Philips Lumify, Exo Iris” — six competitor devices, no Sonosite product. The same page names “Sonosite PX/LX/ST” as its examples of the portable class, at a stated “Price range: $20,000 – $100,000,” while the handheld category’s stated range is “$2000 – $10,000.”

The company’s own pocket-class chapter closed with a September 2020 End of Sale notice, and factory service for those systems and transducers ends August 31, 2027. The new Sonosite iLOOK, 510(k)-cleared as K260595 on March 10, 2026, is a wireless vascular-access transducer paired with a mounted display — Sonosite’s own words are “purpose-built for vascular access” — not a general-purpose handheld. The manufacturer’s own category definition

Sonosite’s own cost page lists six handheld examples — none of them Sonosite

Most pages that claim a manufacturer has left a product category are reading tea leaves from a catalogue. This one does not have to. Sonosite publishes a buyer-education page titled “How Much Does an Ultrasound Machine Cost?”, and on that page the company sorts the market into classes, names example devices in each class, and states a price range for each. It is the cleanest available evidence of where Sonosite believes its own products sit — and where they do not.

That is the whole argument in one citation. A buyer typing this brand and this product class into a search box is looking for something the manufacturer itself no longer supplies, and the manufacturer says so in the course of explaining prices to that same buyer. From a DARPA grant to a lineup with no pocket scanner

Sonosite did not miss the handheld class. It invented the class immediately upstream of it, ran one pocket-format experiment, and then moved back up-market as pocket scanners became a phone accessory. Three eras, thirty years, and a gap the company’s own cost page now fills with other brands.

That is Sonosite’s own distinction — its innovation page puts “handheld” in quotation marks when describing the 180, and its current cost page defines handheld as the smart-device-connected pocket format. What exists in 2026: every Sonosite ultrasound machine in the current lineup

Sonosite’s products page listed six ultrasound systems on July 25, 2026, and the fastest way to classify them is to keep the company’s own positioning phrase attached to each one. Those phrases do the work: “For Vascular Access,” “Procedural Partner,” “Built to Move.” None of them says pocket, phone or handheld.

What else is on that page, and why none of it changes the answer

Alongside the six systems, the products page carries PIV Assist — an AI vessel-identification software feature, badged new — plus the UHF46-20 ultra-high-frequency transducer, the general transducer and accessory catalogue, Sonosite Voice Assist and Synapse Synchronicity. Those are features, transducers and software, not systems. The UHF46-20 is the most interesting of them for image quality, and Sonosite’s LX page presents it as the first and only 46 MHz transducer for point-of-care use; it still plugs into a cart system.

Two of the six systems are vascular-access products rather than general-purpose scanners, which matters when you count what a clinic can actually do with the lineup. The iLOOK is cleared for arterial, PIV and venous exams; the SII-VA is sold as a vascular-access package built on the SII platform. One point worth stating plainly rather than discovering after a purchase order: Sonosite has already published an end-of-support horizon for the SII platform — May 2030 in the United States, Australia and New Zealand, March 2032 in India — even though the SII-VA configuration remains on sale today. Both facts come from Sonosite’s own pages, read the same day.

What the lineup costs, and what Sonosite includes

Sonosite publishes no device prices. Every current product page ends in “Request more info” or, for the LX, “Book a demo,” and a search for dollar figures across the lineup page and all six product pages returns nothing. New Sonosite systems are quoted, not listed. The only published numbers are the market-wide bands on the cost-education page quoted above: “$20,000 – $100,000” for the portable class it illustrates with Sonosite PX, LX and ST, and “$50,000-$150,000+” for stationary cart-based systems.

What that page does specify in detail is what a Sonosite quote includes, and this is the genuinely competitive part of the offer. Sonosite states that it has provided a five-year standard warranty on systems and transducers since 2005, covering accidental transducer drops with overnight loaners; that its systems carry no preventative-maintenance requirement, with the T8-3 TEE transducer as the exception; that software upgrades are free over the product lifetime; that onsite installation is free and four hours of training are included; that Total SonoProtect extended coverage is available and a “Point-of-Sale Warranty Plus” option adds two years for a seven-year total; that trade-in credit is accepted including for other brands; and that Sonosite sales teams sell their used demo equipment. A handheld at a tenth of the price does not typically come with an overnight loaner program. Both of those facts belong in the same comparison.

Sonosite still sells portable. It stopped selling pocket.

One name, two products

The Sonosite iLOOK: one name, two very different products

“Sonosite iLook” is the single most confusing search on this brand, because it returns two devices separated by twenty-four years. Refurbished-equipment carousels are full of the old one. Sonosite’s current catalogue sells the new one. They are not the same class of product, and only one of them can still be serviced by the factory.

The 2026 iLOOK: a wireless transducer for vascular access

The current Sonosite iLOOK received 510(k) clearance K260595 on March 10, 2026. It is a system in two parts: a single wireless L15-5 linear transducer — 15-5 MHz, 1.2 to 6.2 cm depth range, with arterial, PIV and venous listed as its exam types on Sonosite’s own transducer table — and a display on a VESA-compatible bracket designed, in the company’s words, “to integrate smoothly with your vascular access environment.” Sonosite states the scope without hedging: “Sonosite iLOOK is purpose-built for vascular access.” It adds that “the wireless transducer allows clinicians to move freely around the bedside” and that the transducer “weighs roughly the same as your smartphone,” and it frames the product as a way to “give vascular access its own solution” that helps “stretch your POCUS resources, freeing up your other systems.” Like every current Sonosite system, the iLOOK carries no published price: its product page ends in “Request more info,” so purchase is by rep quote.

So the probe is genuinely hand-held and genuinely wireless, which is exactly why the product reads as a handheld in search results and in dealer listings. The cleared exam types are what separate it from the pocket class: a device cleared for arterial, PIV and venous imaging cannot answer a cardiac, obstetric or abdominal question, and no amount of category naming changes that. The 2002 iLook 15 and iLook 25: hand-carried, and long out of support

The original iLook series launched in the United States on August 19, 2002, following 510(k) clearance on May 31 of that year. The launch announcement described a “three-pound iLook series… Just larger than a PDA,” with an original list price between $12,500 and $15,500 — a manufacturer figure from 2002, quoted here as history rather than as a current price. A November 2003 clearance, K033367, bundled the Titan, the iLook 25 and the 180PLUS in one submission, which is a useful anchor for how contemporaneous those three products were.

Sonosite’s retirement schedule lists End Customer Support for “iLook” as having ended in March 2014. That is the number that should govern any purchase decision: a 2002-generation iLook bought in 2026 has had no factory service path for more than a decade. When a refurbished listing says “Sonosite iLook,” assume it is this device until the seller proves otherwise with a model number, and price it accordingly.

The one-block answer

The last Sonosite pocket scanner

Sonosite’s only pocket-class device was the iViz: a seven-inch tablet scanner with its own cabled, interchangeable transducers, not a probe that plugged into a phone. Sonosite retired it in a September 2020 End of Sale notice covering “the Sonosite iViz ultrasound system, transducers and accessories,” with new system orders ending February 28, 2021 and new transducer orders ending August 31, 2022. No successor was named. Factory service ends August 31, 2027. The used market, checked

Search this brand and the product carousels fill with hardware from roughly 1999 to 2016: iLook 15 and 25, SonoSite 180, Titan, MicroMaxx, M-Turbo, SII, Edge. Those listings are real, the machines often work, and buying one can be defensible. What makes it defensible or reckless is a single published number per platform, and it is not the price.

The retirement schedule is the real price tag

Sonosite maintains a product retirement schedule listing an “End Customer Support” date for each platform — the point at which factory service ends. Read it before you read any asking price. A machine whose support ended in 2019 is a machine you will be servicing through third parties for the rest of its life, and the transducers are usually the part that fails.

All figures are third-party asking prices read on July 25, 2026 and labelled by seller. A separate Probo buyer’s guide dated March 9, 2021 put the average refurbished SonoSite at “around $13,000,” with Edge and Edge II units “up to $30,000 or higher” — a five-year-old figure, included only because it is widely quoted, and clearly dated here. Current-generation used inventory is quote-driven: the current-generation listings checked on the same date at Ultrasound Portables and the PX listing at UltrasoundsMD carry no price at all, only a request-a-quote form, so Sonosite’s own $20,000–$100,000 portable band remains the best available reference for those.

The mislabelling problem, and how to shop around it

Dealer taxonomies do not match Sonosite’s. Probo’s 2021 buyer’s guide files the SII, the S Series and the NanoMaxx under a heading of “SonoSite Handheld Systems,” while Sonosite’s own documents describe the SII as a mountable system and the NanoMaxx as a six-pound hand-carried one. That is a data point about the market rather than about the products: when the resale channel calls a mounted system a handheld, a buyer searching for a handheld lands on a mounted system. This page does not adopt that taxonomy, and neither should a purchase order.

Three checks turn a used listing into a decision. Confirm the exact model and generation in writing, because Edge and Edge II, or iLook and iLOOK, are different products with support dates twelve years apart. Confirm the transducer set by part number, because probes are the expensive failure point and are often what a low asking price is missing. And price the whole ownership window rather than the purchase — service, transducer replacement and software each carry their own line, which is what the five-year total cost of ownership breakdown exists to make visible.

  1. Name the form factor you actually need. A pocket probe, a clamshell you carry between rooms, and a cart you wheel to a bedside are three different workflows. Sonosite supplies the second and third today.
  2. Look up the End Customer Support date before the price. On Sonosite’s own schedule, that date is the difference between a serviceable asset and a consumable.
  3. Get the configuration in writing. Model generation, transducer part numbers, battery count and condition, and what warranty the reseller itself provides.
  4. Price the software and service line, not just the box. Some handheld makers charge an annual membership; some charge nothing. Over five years that gap is larger than most purchase-price differences.

Butterfly iQ3 — the single-probe route

Butterfly’s pitch is one transducer for everything, and the iQ3 at $3,899 with a three-year warranty is its flagship route into a single-probe whole-body workflow; the older iQ+ sits at $2,699 with a one-year warranty. The cost to weigh is the membership: Core runs $299 a year and Advanced $420 a year, with a one-time Advanced option at $1,500 that covers five years of software access. Over a five-year window that recurring line is a real number, and it is the reason a sticker-price comparison against a no-subscription device understates the gap. Clarius HD3 — the per-specialty route

Clarius sells the opposite philosophy: buy the scanner that matches the anatomy. The $4,490 tier covers L15, L7, C3, PA and C7Vet; the $6,090 tier covers L20, PAL and EC7, and each includes a first year of Clarius Essentials. For a practice that scans one region intensively — superficial MSK, aesthetics, endocavitary work — that specialization buys image quality a generalist probe cannot match. For a practice that scans everything, it means buying more than one scanner, and the renewal price of Essentials after year one is not published on the store page. GE Vscan Air CL — the dual-head route

The Vscan Air CL puts a curved array on one end and a linear array on the other, so deep and shallow questions are answered without swapping hardware. GE publishes the number directly on its U.S. product page: “3-Year Warranty | Starting at $4,999,” with financing quoted from $174 a month. It is the most expensive of the four entry prices here, and the dual-head design is a compromise between two arrays rather than a specialist version of either.

Suresult D3Ultra and CD2 — the no-subscription route

The D3Ultra is the closest structural answer to what a Sonosite handheld buyer is usually after: one 263 g wireless probe carrying convex, linear and phased arrays, so abdominal, vascular and cardiac windows are available without a second purchase, at $3,200 against a $5,500 list price. It is FDA-certified, and its software is free across iOS, Android and Windows with no subscription cost — lifetime free software, unlimited scans — which removes the recurring line entirely from the five-year comparison. The CD2, a dual-head color-Doppler scanner, sits at $2,900 against a $3,700 list. Both are made by the company that publishes this page, which is why the disclosure below exists. The honest limitation is the same one that applies to every generalist probe: a three-in-one array is tuned across three jobs rather than optimised for one, so a practice living at the top of the frequency range in superficial MSK or facial work is better served by a high-frequency specialty scanner such as Clarius’s L20 tier at $6,090. Who should not buy a used Sonosite system in 2026

A brand map that only says “here are the options” is not much use at the point of purchase. Four situations make a used Sonosite the wrong answer, and in two of them the right answer is to keep the money.

The two cases where the honest recommendation is to wait: a clinic that has not yet decided which questions it needs answered at the bedside, and a buyer whose real constraint is training rather than hardware. In both, a cheap refurbished cart becomes an expensive parking space. Decide the workflow, then buy the form factor that serves it — and if the workflow is genuinely a probe in a coat pocket, buy from the class that supplies it rather than from the brand that used to.

Commercial disclosure: Suresult manufactures two of the devices priced in this guide (the D3Ultra and the CD2) and this article is published on Suresult’s site. We handle that conflict the only honest way we know: every current price here — ours and every competitor’s — was read from that manufacturer’s own U.S. page on the same date, the Sonosite lineup is described in Sonosite’s own published words rather than ours, the case that Sonosite has left the handheld class rests on Sonosite’s own cost page rather than on our reading of it, and every used-market figure is labelled with the reseller that published it.

We wrote this page from primary documents in four tiers. Sonosite’s own pages supplied the current lineup, positioning phrases, iLOOK scope, retirement dates and price bands. The company’s SEC-filed exhibits supplied the MicroMaxx, M-Turbo and NanoMaxx announcements, which is why their datelines are precise. The FDA’s 510(k) database supplied clearance numbers and decision dates. A published company history supplied the ATL spin-off date and the September 1999 first-shipment record. Dealer pages supplied used asking prices and are labelled as such throughout.

Three decisions are worth stating openly. First, terminology: this page uses “hand-carried” for the 1998–2013 systems and reserves “handheld” for the modern pocket class, because that is the distinction Sonosite’s own material draws — its innovation page puts “handheld” in quotation marks around the 180, and its current cost page defines handheld as the smart-device-connected format it illustrates with other companies’ devices. Second, dates: the 180 is described as unveiled in 1998 and shipping worldwide from late 1999, because Sonosite’s marketing says 1998, its own SEC-filed 2007 announcement says 1999, and the company-history record puts first worldwide shipments in September 1999. Both facts are true of different milestones, so both are stated. The legacy iLook and Titan announcements on sonosite.com display a 2015 content-management repost stamp above their original datelines; the datelines are cited.

Third, exclusions. Two widely quoted third-party figures were left out on purpose: an equipment marketplace’s stated average for refurbished current-generation Sonosite carts, which is implausible against Sonosite’s own published portable band and against every dealer floor readable on the same day, and a refurbisher’s buyer-guide figures for the pocket-class device, which contradict the manufacturer’s own documentation. Where a source could not be verified, no number appears. Regulatory wording follows the FDA’s own distinction: devices in this category reach the U.S. market through 510(k) clearance, which means substantial equivalence to a legally marketed device, and “cleared” is not “approved.” Prices were read on July 25, 2026 and are dated wherever they appear.

Sonosite publishes no device prices. Every current product page routes to “Request more info” or “Book a demo,” and the company’s cost-education page discusses cost factors and category bands without naming a single Sonosite device price — so a new system is a quote, not a list price. That page does publish class ranges: “$20,000 – $100,000” for the portable class it illustrates with “Sonosite PX/LX/ST,” “$50,000-$150,000+” for stationary cart-based systems, and “$2000 – $10,000” for the handheld class it illustrates only with other companies’ devices. On the used market, dealer asking prices read on July 25, 2026 included a refurbished M-Turbo from $6,700 at Probo Medical and a used MicroMaxx at $3,500 at AME Ultrasounds; those are third-party figures, not Sonosite quotes, and the full dated set is in the used-market section above.

Is there a Sonosite handheld ultrasound in 2026?

Not a general-purpose one. Sonosite’s 2026 lineup is iLOOK, LX, ST, MT, PX and SII-VA: cart and stand systems, one clamshell portable (the MT), and vascular-access configurations. The iLOOK pairs a wireless transducer with a mounted display and is described by Sonosite as “purpose-built for vascular access.” Sonosite’s own cost-education page settles the question from the other direction: its “Handheld Ultrasound Machines” examples are Butterfly iQ3, Clarius, GE Vscan Air CL/SL, Mindray TE Air, Philips Lumify and Exo Iris — no Sonosite device appears. The company’s only pocket-class scanner was retired by a September 2020 End of Sale notice, with factory service ending August 31, 2027.

What replaced the Sonosite iViz?

Nothing did, inside Sonosite’s own catalogue. The End of Sale notice named no successor, and no device in the 2026 lineup is an equivalent general-purpose pocket scanner: the MT is a clamshell system with its own screen, and the iLOOK is a vascular-access system built around a wireless transducer and a mounted display. What is the Sonosite iLOOK — is it a Sonosite handheld ultrasound?

The iLOOK is a vascular-access system, not a general-purpose handheld. It pairs a single wireless L15-5 linear transducer — 15-5 MHz, 1.2 to 6.2 cm depth, with arterial, PIV and venous listed as its exam types — with a VESA-mountable display, and it received 510(k) clearance K260595 on March 10, 2026. Sonosite states the scope directly: “Sonosite iLOOK is purpose-built for vascular access.” The transducer itself is hand-held and wireless, which is why the product reads as a handheld in search results, but the exams it is cleared for are vascular access alone. Note the naming overlap: “Sonosite iLook” also means the 2002 iLook 15 and iLook 25, three-pound hand-carried units whose factory support ended in March 2014.

Is a used Sonosite ultrasound worth buying in 2026?

It depends entirely on which platform, because Sonosite publishes an End Customer Support date for each one and that date decides the value of a listing more than the asking price does. Support has already ended for the 180 (October 2016), the iLook (March 2014), the Titan (March 2016), the MicroMaxx (December 2019), the NanoMaxx (May 2024), and both the Edge and the S Series (July 2024). Still inside the published window as of July 2026: the M-Turbo to April 2028 in the U.S., Canada, Australia and New Zealand and April 2029 in Europe, the X-Porte to December 2028, and the Edge II and SII to May 2030 in the U.S., Australia and New Zealand. So a used Edge II or M-Turbo with a documented transducer set can be a defensible purchase; a MicroMaxx at $3,500 is a working machine with no factory service path.

What is a SonoSite machine, and who makes it?

Sonosite is a point-of-care ultrasound manufacturer and, since 2012, a wholly owned subsidiary of FUJIFILM — its name on current documents is FUJIFILM Sonosite. The company began inside ATL Ultrasound, which received a DARPA grant through the U.S. Office of Naval Research in February 1996 to build, in Sonosite’s own description of the brief, “an ultrasound machine portable and rugged enough to be carried into battle.” SonoSite was spun off from ATL on April 6, 1998; its first system, the SonoSite 180, was unveiled in 1998 and shipping worldwide from late 1999. “A Sonosite machine” in 2026 means one of six current systems — iLOOK, LX, ST, MT, PX or SII-VA — or one of the retired hand-carried systems still circulating on the used market.

Sonosite’s own vocabulary answers this. So a search for “Sonosite portable” lands on products Sonosite sells today, while a search for “Sonosite handheld” lands on a class Sonosite’s own page populates with other companies’ devices. On its current lineup it does not compete in that class; it competes one tier up. A Sonosite ST, LX or PX is a cart or stand system from the portable class Sonosite’s own cost page prices at “$20,000 – $100,000” — those three are the page’s named examples — and the newer MT clamshell sits in that same portable class rather than the handheld one.
