Linear, convex, phased-array, endocavity and multi-array probes are not interchangeable. The right first purchase depends on the target depth, the acoustic window, the footprint you can place on the patient, and how many exam types the clinic expects one device to cover.

빠른 답변
There is no universally best ultrasound probe; the correct probe matches anatomy, depth and workflow. Use a phased-array probe for cardiac and intercostal windows, a convex probe for deeper abdominal and pelvic work, a routine linear probe for vascular, thyroid and everyday MSK, and a high-frequency linear probe for very superficial targets. If one device must cover deep, superficial and cardiac work, compare a multi-array 3-in-1 probe.
Compare all probe types ↓Choose by weekly workflow
| Need | 여기서 시작하세요 | Avoid when |
|---|---|---|
| Cardiac first | CD2 | Abdominal or OB convex work is equally important |
| Mixed exams | D3Ultra | One narrow specialty dominates or rooms scan simultaneously |
| Routine superficial | L10H | Cardiac, deep abdomen or ultra-shallow detail drives the purchase |
| High frequency | L20Pro / L24Pro | The target regularly sits beyond the selected shallow depth |
Ultrasound probe types compared
Most clinics can narrow the choice quickly by matching the field shape to the clinical question. Frequency matters, but it cannot compensate for the wrong footprint or field of view.
Probe-family definitions and field-shape tradeoffs are based on current SonoSite educational references and peer-reviewed POCUS literature; full links appear in 출처.
| Probe type | Field and footprint | Typical role | First Suresult comparison | Main tradeoff |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 리니어 | Flat footprint; rectangular image | Vascular access, carotid, thyroid, breast, superficial MSK, soft tissue | L10H | Excellent shallow detail; not the first choice for deep abdomen or cardiac windows |
| High-frequency linear | Small or medium flat footprint; shallow rectangular field | Small joints, skin, superficial vessels, nerves, facial and aesthetic work | L20Pro / L24Pro | More shallow detail, less penetration; 24 MHz is not automatically better for every target |
| Convex / curvilinear | Curved footprint; broad fan-shaped field | Abdomen, pelvis, OB/GYN, bladder, FAST and deeper general imaging | D3Ultra convex array | Broad deep view; footprint is larger than phased or microconvex options |
| Phased array | Small footprint; sector field steered through a narrow window | Cardiac, intercostal and focused deep imaging | CD2 | Fits between ribs; not the best default for high-detail superficial work |
| Endocavity | Long, narrow form for close internal access | Transvaginal pelvic imaging or transrectal prostate imaging | D2T / T8 / LC1 | Excellent close access; choose single-plane, dual-purpose or bi-plane architecture around the actual examination |
| Multi-array / 3-in-1 | Several array roles in one handheld housing | Mixed clinics, urgent care, primary care and mobile POCUS | D3Ultra | Breadth and simpler ownership; a dedicated specialty probe may better match a narrow specialty workflow |
Image quality depends on the target, patient, settings, operator, display and workflow as well as the transducer.
How major handheld brands implement these probe types
Major handheld brands solve the same anatomy and access problems with different hardware. The models below are architecture examples, not a best-to-worst ranking. Within the Suresult range, CD2 is the closest phased-plus-linear reference, while D3Ultra represents the broader convex-plus-linear-plus-phased path. For model-by-model pricing, subscription and ownership comparisons across the current handheld probes, wired and wireless alike, see the ultrasound probes for sale page.
Architecture, frequency, modes, platform and ownership statements are linked to current manufacturer pages and were checked July 12, 2026. For every model, confirm image export, DICOM/PACS, storage, user-account and software-plan requirements; model-specific dependencies are noted where the manufacturer documents them.

Choose phased array when cardiac access is the reason for buying
A phased-array probe has a small contact footprint and a sector-shaped field, which helps the operator work through intercostal spaces. That makes it the natural starting point for focused cardiac and many deep thoracic windows. If cardiac is only one of several weekly exam types, a multi-array probe may be more practical than a dedicated phased probe.
CD2 frequency and depth figures below are from the official Suresult CD2 product page, checked July 11, 2026.
Suresult CD2: phased array plus linear
CD2 is the most direct Suresult recommendation when the clinic is buying for cardiac POCUS but still wants a linear side for vascular access, carotid, thyroid or superficial MSK. Its official page lists a cardiac range of 2.2/3.6 MHz with 90-240 mm depth and a linear range of 7.5/10 MHz with 20-100 mm depth.
Compare another option when: the clinic needs abdomen, OB or pelvic convex imaging as often as cardiac. In that case, compare D3Ultra instead of buying a cardiac-first dual head.
Choose a 3-in-1 probe when one device must cover mixed exams
Multi-array handheld probes trade the narrow optimization of a single specialty probe for broader daily coverage. They make the most sense when the same device moves between abdominal, lung, cardiac, vascular, MSK and procedure-guidance work.
D3Ultra array, mode, depth and platform details below are from the official Suresult D3Ultra product page, checked July 11, 2026.
Suresult D3Ultra: convex + linear + phased
D3Ultra is the first Suresult model to compare when a clinic wants one scanner rather than separate cardiac, abdominal and superficial probes. The official technical data lists convex 3.2/5.0 MHz, linear 7.5/10 MHz and phased 3.2/4.0 MHz, with B, M, Color, Power and PW Doppler modes.
Compare another option when: one narrow job dominates the schedule. A cardiac-heavy program may prefer CD2, while a superficial specialty may prefer L10H, L20Pro or L24Pro.
Linear probes: choose routine range or high frequency
The word linear describes the flat footprint and rectangular field, not one fixed frequency. A routine linear probe can be the better first purchase for vascular access, thyroid, breast, general MSK and small parts. Ultra-high-frequency probes make more sense when the target is consistently shallow and the clinic values fine near-field detail more than penetration.
Model frequencies, depths and footprints below are from the official L10H, L20Pro and L24Pro product pages, checked July 11, 2026.
| 모델 | Official frequency | Official depth / footprint | Start here when | Compare carefully when |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| L10H | 7.5/10 MHz | Routine linear range; 192 elements | Vascular, thyroid, breast, general MSK and small-parts work need useful penetration | The clinic needs very shallow skin, facial or small-joint detail |
| L20Pro | 16/20MHz | 10/20/30/40 mm; L25 footprint | Small joints, superficial MSK, nerves, vessels, thyroid and aesthetics need high frequency with up to 40 mm depth | Routine deeper linear work is more common than ultra-shallow work |
| L24Pro | 18/24 MHz | 1-25 mm; 18 x 5 mm footprint | Very superficial facial, skin, small-target and injection-planning work needs the smallest shallow window | The target regularly sits deeper than 25 mm or requires a wider routine footprint |
L10H
Choose L10H when the clinic needs a broad everyday linear role rather than the shallowest possible field.
View L10HL20Pro
Choose L20Pro when high-frequency detail matters but the buyer still wants selectable depth out to 40 mm.
View L20ProL24Pro
Choose L24Pro when a small footprint and 1-25 mm shallow field match the work better than routine penetration.
View L24ProFor specialty detail, compare the rheumatology and small-joint guide and the aesthetic high-frequency comparison.

Watch on YouTubeConvex, microconvex and endocavity probes solve different access problems
Convex / curvilinear
The broad fan-shaped view is useful for abdomen, pelvis, OB/GYN, bladder, FAST and other deeper general imaging. The larger footprint is a strength for field of view but can be awkward in narrow windows.
Microconvex
A smaller curved footprint can help where a standard convex probe is too large, including pediatric, veterinary and narrow-access work. The buyer should confirm frequency, depth and specialty presets rather than choosing by shape alone.
Endocavity
Transvaginal and transrectal probes bring the array closer to pelvic or prostate targets. A single-plane transvaginal probe, a convex-plus-endocavity dual probe and a bi-plane rectal probe solve different jobs and should not be grouped as one generic option.
D2T vs T8 vs LC1: choose by access path, not by the word “endocavity”
Suresult has three distinct starting points. D2T combines transabdominal convex and endocavity arrays in one wireless device. T8 is the dedicated endocavity microconvex option for transvaginal and close pelvic work. LC1 is a bi-plane rectal probe built around transverse and longitudinal prostate views. Clarius EC7 HD3 is the most direct named competitor in this section because it is also a dedicated wireless endocavity scanner.
The comparison below uses current official Suresult D2T, T8 and LC1 pages plus the official Clarius EC7 HD3 page, checked July 12, 2026. The general PAL, Vscan Air SL, TE Air i3P and Butterfly iQ3 examples above are not endocavity substitutes.
| 모델 | Probe architecture | Official frequency / depth | Start here when | Compare carefully when |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Suresult D2T | Convex + endocavity microconvex dual probe | Convex 3.2/5.0 MHz, 90-305 mm; endocavity 6/8 MHz, 30-120 mm | The same clinic needs transabdominal pelvic or OB views and transvaginal or transrectal access in one device | The clinic only needs a lighter dedicated endocavity probe or requires bi-plane prostate views |
| Suresult T8 | Dedicated endocavity microconvex probe | 6/8 MHz; 30/60/90/120 mm; 149-degree field | Transvaginal, early pregnancy or close pelvic imaging is the main reason for buying | Transabdominal convex imaging must stay in the same device, or bi-plane prostate guidance is required |
| Suresult LC1 | Bi-plane T-type rectal probe with convex + linear arrays | 6.5/8 MHz; 40-100 mm | The urology workflow needs transverse and longitudinal transrectal prostate views and needle guidance | The service is primarily transvaginal rather than prostate-focused |
| 클라리우스 EC7 HD3 | Dedicated wireless wide-band microconvex endocavity scanner | 3-10 MHz; up to 15 cm; 164-degree field | The clinic wants a Clarius endocavity workflow for early OB, IVF, pelvic or urology use on iOS/Android | The buyer wants convex-plus-endocavity hardware in one device, bi-plane prostate geometry, or needs cloud/DICOM without the relevant Clarius software path |
Suresult D2T: convex plus transvaginal / transrectal access
D2T is the broadest Suresult endocavity choice because it pairs a standard convex array with a 149-degree endocavity microconvex array. The official page lists 192 elements, B, M, Color, Power and PW Doppler, puncture assist, iOS/Android/Windows support and a three-hour battery.
Compare another option when: T8 is more direct for a dedicated transvaginal room, while LC1 is the clearer fit when bi-plane prostate imaging is the actual procurement reason.
Suresult T8: dedicated endocavity microconvex
T8 uses the same listed 6/8 MHz and 30-120 mm endocavity range without adding a convex head. The official page lists a 149-degree field, 192 elements, B, M, Color, Power and PW Doppler, puncture assist, iOS/Android/Windows support, a three-hour battery and 200 g weight.
Compare another option when: D2T makes more sense when one purchase must also cover transabdominal convex scanning; LC1 makes more sense when two prostate planes are required.
Suresult LC1: transverse plus longitudinal prostate views
LC1 is not simply another transrectal probe. Its T-type bi-plane design combines convex and linear arrays for prostate localization and needle-guidance workflow. The official page lists 6.5/8 MHz, 40-100 mm depth, 192 elements, 32 channels, B, M, Color, Power and PW Doppler, puncture assist, and iOS/Android/Windows support.
Compare another option when: D2T or T8 is more appropriate when the primary examination is transvaginal or general pelvic rather than prostate-focused.
Clarius EC7 HD3: dedicated wireless endocavity scanner
Clarius positions EC7 HD3 for early OB, IVF, pelvic and urology workflows. Its official page lists a 3-10 MHz wide-band microconvex array, 15 cm maximum depth, 164-degree field of view, 326 g weight, iOS 14+ and Android 11+ support, approximately 60 minutes of scan time and approximately 90 minutes to charge.
Compare another option when: D2T is the better architecture comparison for combined convex and endocavity hardware, while LC1 is the more direct comparison for bi-plane prostate work.
If deep abdominal imaging is the main purchase reason, use the portable convex probe guide rather than buying from a general taxonomy table.
Frequency, depth and footprint must be judged together
Higher frequency generally improves shallow detail but loses penetration faster. Lower frequency travels deeper but does not provide the same near-field resolution. That tradeoff is only part of the decision: the footprint must also fit the acoustic window, and the displayed field must match how the clinician scans.
“The best probe is not the one with the highest number on the product page. It is the one that puts the target in a useful field of view at the depth your team actually scans.”
Fernando Mariz, MD – clinical buyer guidance
Practical rule: use the highest frequency that still reaches the target with a usable field, then confirm that the footprint fits the patient and procedure. Do not buy 24 MHz for a 60 mm target, and do not buy a broad convex footprint for a narrow intercostal window.
Who should not buy one probe first?
A single-probe purchase is a poor fit when…
- The service line has two equally important but incompatible windows, such as cardiac and deep abdominal imaging.
- The clinic expects a generalist handheld to replace a high-volume echocardiography, OB or radiology system.
- Different rooms need simultaneous access; one versatile device still creates a scheduling bottleneck.
- The procurement team has not confirmed display devices, image export, DICOM/PACS, storage, software costs and cleaning workflow.
- The team is choosing by the highest MHz, element count or lowest device price without testing the weekly exam mix.
A mixed private clinic may still start with D3Ultra, but a cardiac-heavy lab, a high-frequency aesthetic room or a deep abdominal service may be better served by a dedicated device. Breadth is valuable only when the clinic uses it.
Ultrasound probe quote checklist
- List the five most common exams and estimate how many scans each represents in a normal week.
- Write the shallowest and deepest targets beside each exam; do not use one generic depth number.
- Confirm the required footprint: flat linear, curved convex, small phased, microconvex or endocavity.
- Ask which imaging and Doppler modes are included on the exact model, not only the product family.
- Confirm display-device compatibility, local storage, export formats, DICOM/PACS path and user accounts.
- Separate required software from optional cloud, AI, education or fleet tools and calculate multi-year cost.
- Confirm warranty, support route, replacement process, regional availability and every item in the case.
- Test the probe on the clinic’s real target depth and workflow before treating a specification table as the final answer.
It is better for ownership simplicity when one clinic device must cover abdominal, superficial and cardiac windows. Separate dedicated probes can be better when a narrow specialty dominates, several rooms scan at once, or the service needs specialized measurements and workflow.
Does a higher-frequency ultrasound probe always produce a better image?
No. Higher frequency can improve shallow detail but reduces penetration. The image is only useful if the probe reaches the target and its footprint and field of view fit the exam.
Which Suresult probe should a clinic choose for transvaginal or prostate imaging?
Start with T8 when the main workflow is dedicated transvaginal or close pelvic imaging. Choose D2T when one device must combine external convex scanning with transvaginal or transrectal access. Choose LC1 when the urology service needs a bi-plane rectal probe for transverse and longitudinal prostate views and needle guidance.
Which probe should a mixed private clinic buy first?
A mixed clinic should first compare a multipurpose device such as D3Ultra when abdominal, superficial and cardiac scans all matter. If one exam family dominates, start with the dedicated CD2, L10H, L20Pro or L24Pro path instead.
