Handheld thyroid ultrasound machines for the endocrine clinic
Eight real neck and metabolic captures from Suresult wireless hardware, including a cystic and solid thyroid nodule at 55 mm. Seven models compared by frequency and needle guidance, with the L14 at $2,139, software included and no subscription.
Quick answer
A thyroid ultrasound machine is a high-frequency linear scanner that images the thyroid gland and the neck, so a clinician can size a nodule during the visit.
- The AIUM head and neck practice parameter prefers mean frequencies of 10 to 14 MHz or greater. The Suresult L14 and L14Pro reach 14 MHz.
- Color, power and pulsed-wave Doppler with M-mode run on every model on this page, with no membership.
- In-plane and out-of-plane puncture guides sit in the app, and the L10H additionally lists visualized needle guidance for aspiration work.
- The D3Ultra carries a 7.5/10 MHz linear head for the gland and a convex head reaching 300 mm. The liver of a metabolic patient fits in the same visit.

Technique basics
How the exam comes together, probe to report
Take the linear head and open at 40 mm.The gland sits inside the first 40 mm of the neck in most adults. The linear head at 40 mm holds the whole lobe and the tissue behind it. Harmonic imaging at 10 MHz is the starting setting on these captures.
D: 40 mm, F: H10.0 MHz on the header
Fix the landmarks before reading anything. The common carotid artery and the internal jugular vein run side by side in long axis in this frame, which is the landmark pair for the lateral neck. Holding that pair in view keeps the probe oriented while it slides from isthmus to upper pole.
7.5 MHz, 40 mm, dynamic range 70
Drop the color box on the finding.Color Doppler answers the vascularity question, and the pulse repetition frequency decides what flow appears. This frame runs at 2.0 kHz with the box steered 7 degrees and color gain at 39.
PRF 2.0 kHz, steer 7 degrees, color gain 39
Change heads for the metabolic question.A patient with type 2 diabetes often needs the liver looked at as well, and the D3Ultra convex head opens to 300 mm on the same device. This frame runs color at 5 MHz with depth at 160 mm.
convex 5 MHz, 160 mm depth, PRF 0.8 kHz
What the research says
The evidence, four studies checked
- Palpation misses most thyroid nodules.
Among 2,441 people examined by both methods, physical examination found only 53 of the 249 nodules that high-resolution ultrasonography found, which is 21%.
Wiest et al., J Ultrasound Med 1998 - Ultrasound guidance more than halved inadequate thyroid samples.
Across 9,683 patients, specimens were cytologically inadequate in 8.7% of conventional aspirations against 3.5% of sonography-guided aspirations, and false negatives fell from 2.3% to 1%.
Danese et al., Thyroid 1998 - Sonographic risk scoring removed more than half the biopsies.
In 477 patients referred for aspiration, ACR TI-RADS classified 268 of 502 biopsies as unnecessary with a false-negative rate of 2.2%.
Grani et al., J Clin Endocrinol Metab 2019 - Ultrasound detects moderate to severe fatty liver against histology.
A meta-analysis of 49 studies and 4,720 participants reported 84.8% sensitivity and 93.6% specificity for moderate to severe fatty liver against histology.

What to Consider Before Buying a Handheld Ultrasound for Endocrinology
Before you buy
구매 전 확인해야 할 사항
What is the best handheld ultrasound for endocrinology?
For thyroid and neck work the Suresult L14Pro is the strongest fit, at 10/14 MHz across 256 elements. A practice that also scans the liver should take the D3Ultra, which adds a convex head reaching 300 mm.
What frequency does a thyroid ultrasound need?
The AIUM practice parameter for head and neck ultrasound states that mean frequencies of 10 to 14 MHz or greater are preferred for most patients. The Suresult L14 and L14Pro reach 14 MHz.
How deep does a thyroid scan need to reach?
The thyroid gland sits within the first 40 mm of the neck in most adults. Suresult neck captures were recorded at 40 mm and 55 mm of depth. The L14 models reach 80 mm for the deeper cervical chain.
How much does a thyroid ultrasound machine cost?
The Suresult L14 starts at $2,139 and the L14Pro at $3,441, with software included. The Clarius L15 HD3 lists at $3,795 and the Butterfly iQ3 at $3,899 before subscription fees.
Can a handheld ultrasound find a thyroid nodule?
Yes. The atlas on this page carries a cystic and solid nodule captured at 10 MHz on 55 mm of depth. A 1998 study of 2,441 people found that palpation identified only 21% of the nodules ultrasound found.
Does the same probe check cervical lymph nodes?
A Suresult linear probe images cervical lymph nodes at 10 MHz, and one capture measured 26.51 mm by 5.97 mm on screen. A second capture shows a node with an echogenic hilum through its center.
Can these scanners guide a thyroid fine-needle aspiration?
Every Suresult model on this page carries in-plane and out-of-plane puncture guides. Needle enhance is listed on the L14Pro, L20Pro, L10SH, L10H and D3Ultra, and the L10H adds visualized needle guidance. A biopsy needle guide for linear probes is sold as a separate item.
Is ultrasound guidance worth it for thyroid aspiration?
A study of 9,683 patients reported inadequate specimens in 8.7% of conventional aspirations and 3.5% of sonography-guided aspirations. False negatives fell from 2.3% to 1% in the same series.
Does the scanner support ACR TI-RADS scoring?
ACR TI-RADS scores a thyroid nodule from image features such as margin, echogenicity and punctate echogenic foci. A scanner therefore has to resolve those features at the gland. The published Suresult thyroid video on this page works a nodule through the ACR TI-RADS categories.
Can an endocrinologist check the liver with the same device?
Yes, if the device carries a convex head. The Suresult D3Ultra and the C5SH-Pro reach 300 mm at 3.2/5.0 MHz, and this page shows a fatty liver captured at 3.5 MHz on 200 mm of depth.
How accurate is ultrasound for fatty liver?
A 2011 meta-analysis in Hepatology pooled 49 studies and 4,720 participants. It reported 84.8% sensitivity and 93.6% specificity for moderate to severe fatty liver against histology.
Is there a subscription on a Suresult scanner?
No. Color Doppler, pulsed-wave Doppler, measurement and DICOM export sit on the device with no annual fee. Clarius publishes a $695 yearly membership and Butterfly publishes plans at $299 and $420 a year.
Does it export images into the patient record?
Yes. Every Suresult scanner on this page saves stills and cine loops of up to 1,000 frames, and exports as DICOM, JPEG, PNG or MP4.
Which platform does the software run on?
Suresult Software runs on Windows, iOS and Android. That matters in an endocrine clinic where the desk machine is a Windows laptop rather than a tablet.
Which Suresult model suits a thyroid clinic, a diabetes clinic or an aspiration list?
Thyroid and neck work: the L14Pro. Diabetes practice that also images the liver: the D3Ultra. Guided aspiration lists: the L10H, the model that lists visualized needle guidance.
