Handheld ultrasound for pediatrics, from the infant hip to the lung field

Two pediatric captures on this page were recorded on a D3Ultra: a Graf-method infant hip and a six-month-old calf read at 10 MHz. Pediatric coverage starts at $1,767, with software included and no yearly fee.

Every scan on this page was recorded on this Suresult hardware family, by clinicians who bought it and by a clinical trainer who scans with it. Each clip is trimmed to the scan itself. ·Trusted by 8,717 clinicians →

Quick answer

A handheld ultrasound for pediatrics is a wireless probe that pairs with a phone or tablet and images a child without radiation. The probe format decides the exam, and pediatric work usually starts with a linear head like the Suresult L14, at 10/14 MHz across a 25 mm footprint.

  • A 10/14 MHz linear head over a 25 mm footprint covers an infant hip, a forearm bone and a lung field.
  • The E11 weighs 103 g and images from 30 to 80 mm, the depth a newborn abdomen actually needs.
  • Color Doppler, power Doppler, pulsed-wave Doppler, M-mode and DICOM export ship on every model on this page.
  • The D3Ultra carries convex, linear and phased heads in one 263 g probe.

Technique basics

How the exam comes together, probe to report

  1. Pick the head by the depth the child needsPick the head by the depth the child needs

A hip, a lung field and most soft tissue in a child sit inside 80 mm, which is linear territory at 10 to 14 MHz. A school-age abdomen needs a micro-convex or convex head to reach 160 mm and beyond.

    Linear 20 to 80 mm · micro-convex 60 to 160 mm
  2. Set depth first, gain secondSet depth first, gain second

Start near 40 mm and let the structure fill the top half of the screen before touching gain. A shallow field needs less gain, and over-gaining an infant hip buries the cartilage.

D: 40 mm on the header
  3. Hold the hip in a true coronal planeHold the hip in a true coronal plane

An infant hip screen is read in the coronal plane with the iliac wing straight along the top of the image. A tilted plane changes what the angle measures, so the plane is checked before any caliper is placed.

    Graf method, coronal plane
  4. Record a loop, then export itRecord a loop, then export it

Every model on this page stores cine loops of 100 to 1,000 frames and exports JPEG, PNG, MP4 or DICOM. A child rarely holds still, so a loop scrubbed afterwards beats a single frozen frame.

What the research says

The evidence, three studies checked

  • Lung ultrasound was more sensitive than chest radiography in children.

Across 30 studies and 4,546 children, lung ultrasound reached 0.940 sensitivity and 0.855 specificity for childhood community-acquired pneumonia.

Shi et al., Pediatr Pulmonol 2024
  • Bedside ultrasound was the strongest test for intussusception.

A systematic review of 13 studies in children under 18 reported that point-of-care ultrasound had a positive likelihood ratio of 19.7 and a negative likelihood ratio of 0.10 for intussusception.

Hom et al., Pediatr Emerg Care 2022
  • Bedside ultrasound found skull fractures after blunt head injury.

Pooled data from seven studies and 925 children gave 91% sensitivity and 96% specificity for skull fracture on point-of-care ultrasound, with a negative predictive value of 97%.

What to Consider Before Buying a Handheld Ultrasound for Pediatrics

Choose the ideal devices for pediatric evaluations with multi-frequency imaging and versatile probes suitable for every age and body size.

Before you buy

구매 전 확인해야 할 사항

What is the best handheld ultrasound for pediatrics?

The Suresult D3Ultra suits most pediatric practices, because convex, linear and phased heads sit in one 263 g probe. The Suresult E11 suits newborn scanning, because its micro-convex head is 103 g and images from 30 to 80 mm.

Which probe do I need for an infant hip screen?

An infant hip screen needs a high-frequency linear probe. The Suresult L14 and L14Pro run 10/14 MHz across a 25 mm footprint, and the D3Ultra linear head runs 7.5/10 MHz.

Can a handheld ultrasound scan a newborn abdomen?

Yes. The Suresult E11 is a micro-convex probe with an R13 head, an 8/11 MHz range and a 30 to 80 mm depth window, which covers newborn abdominal organs.

Is lung ultrasound reliable in children?

A 2024 meta-analysis of 30 studies and 4,546 children reported 0.940 sensitivity and 0.855 specificity for lung ultrasound in childhood pneumonia, with higher sensitivity than chest radiography.

Can a bedside scan pick up intussusception?

A 2022 systematic review covered 13 studies of children under 18 with suspected intussusception. It reported a positive likelihood ratio of 19.7 and a negative likelihood ratio of 0.10 for point-of-care ultrasound.

Can ultrasound show a skull fracture in a child?

Pooled data from seven studies and 925 children gave 91% sensitivity and 96% specificity for skull fracture on point-of-care ultrasound after blunt head injury.

How much does a pediatric handheld ultrasound cost?

Suresult pediatric models run from $1,767 for the E11 to $3,441 for the L14Pro. Butterfly publishes $3,899 for the iQ3 and Clarius publishes $3,795 for the L15 HD3.

Do Suresult scanners require a software subscription?

No. Imaging modes, measurements, needle guides and DICOM export are included with the scanner. Butterfly lists $299 to $420 a year and Clarius lists $695 a year for their memberships.

Which model covers the heart and the lungs in a child?

The Suresult CD2 carries a 2.2/3.6 MHz phased head and a 7.5/10 MHz linear head on a 192-element, 150 g body. The D3Ultra covers the same two windows and adds a convex head.

Does the probe work with an iPhone or an Android tablet?

Yes. Every Suresult model on this page runs on iOS, Android and Windows over a dual-band 802.11n Wi-Fi connection, so an existing device can drive the probe.

Can I measure and export what I find?

Yes. Measurements run in B-mode, B+M and B+PW, cine loops store 100 to 1,000 frames, and files export as JPEG, PNG, MP4 or DICOM.

Is a handheld enough, or does a pediatric clinic need a cart system?

A handheld ultrasound answers focused pediatric questions about the hip, the lung field, the abdomen and gross cardiac function. A comprehensive pediatric echocardiogram or a detailed radiology study stays on a cart system.
