Suresult D3Ultra, L20Pro, CD2 and T8 with GE, Butterfly and Clarius probe types
Ultrasound probe buyer guide

Linear, convex, phased-array, endocavity and multi-array probes are not interchangeable. The right first purchase depends on the target depth, the acoustic window, the footprint you can place on the patient, and how many exam types the clinic expects one device to cover.

クイックアンサー

There is no universally best ultrasound probe; the correct probe matches anatomy, depth and workflow. Use a phased-array probe for cardiac and intercostal windows, a convex probe for deeper abdominal and pelvic work, a routine linear probe for vascular, thyroid and everyday MSK, and a high-frequency linear probe for very superficial targets. If one device must cover deep, superficial and cardiac work, compare a multi-array 3-in-1 probe.

Ultrasound probe types compared

Most clinics can narrow the choice quickly by matching the field shape to the clinical question. Frequency matters, but it cannot compensate for the wrong footprint or field of view.

How major handheld brands implement these probe types

Major handheld brands solve the same anatomy and access problems with different hardware. The models below are architecture examples, not a best-to-worst ranking. Within the Suresult range, CD2 is the closest phased-plus-linear reference, while D3Ultra represents the broader convex-plus-linear-plus-phased path. For model-by-model pricing, subscription and ownership comparisons across the current handheld probes, wired and wireless alike, see the ultrasound probes for sale page.

Architecture, frequency, modes, platform and ownership statements are linked to current manufacturer pages and were checked July 12, 2026. For every model, confirm image export, DICOM/PACS, storage, user-account and software-plan requirements; model-specific dependencies are noted where the manufacturer documents them.

Choose phased array when cardiac access is the reason for buying

A phased-array probe has a small contact footprint and a sector-shaped field, which helps the operator work through intercostal spaces. That makes it the natural starting point for focused cardiac and many deep thoracic windows. If cardiac is only one of several weekly exam types, a multi-array probe may be more practical than a dedicated phased probe.

CD2 frequency and depth figures below are from the official Suresult CD2 product page, checked July 11, 2026.

Cardiac-first choice

Suresult CD2: phased array plus linear

CD2 is the most direct Suresult recommendation when the clinic is buying for cardiac POCUS but still wants a linear side for vascular access, carotid, thyroid or superficial MSK. Its official page lists a cardiac range of 2.2/3.6 MHz with 90-240 mm depth and a linear range of 7.5/10 MHz with 20-100 mm depth.

Compare another option when: the clinic needs abdomen, OB or pelvic convex imaging as often as cardiac. In that case, compare D3Ultra instead of buying a cardiac-first dual head.

Choose a 3-in-1 probe when one device must cover mixed exams

Multi-array handheld probes trade the narrow optimization of a single specialty probe for broader daily coverage. They make the most sense when the same device moves between abdominal, lung, cardiac, vascular, MSK and procedure-guidance work.

D3Ultra array, mode, depth and platform details below are from the official Suresult D3Ultra product page, checked July 11, 2026.

Suresult D3Ultra: convex + linear + phased

D3Ultra is the first Suresult model to compare when a clinic wants one scanner rather than separate cardiac, abdominal and superficial probes. The official technical data lists convex 3.2/5.0 MHz, linear 7.5/10 MHz and phased 3.2/4.0 MHz, with B, M, Color, Power and PW Doppler modes.

Linear probes: choose routine range or high frequency

The word linear describes the flat footprint and rectangular field, not one fixed frequency. A routine linear probe can be the better first purchase for vascular access, thyroid, breast, general MSK and small parts. Ultra-high-frequency probes make more sense when the target is consistently shallow and the clinic values fine near-field detail more than penetration.

Model frequencies, depths and footprints below are from the official L10H, L20Pro and L24Pro product pages, checked July 11, 2026.

Convex, microconvex and endocavity probes solve different access problems

Convex / curvilinear

The broad fan-shaped view is useful for abdomen, pelvis, OB/GYN, bladder, FAST and other deeper general imaging. The larger footprint is a strength for field of view but can be awkward in narrow windows.

Microconvex

A smaller curved footprint can help where a standard convex probe is too large, including pediatric, veterinary and narrow-access work. The buyer should confirm frequency, depth and specialty presets rather than choosing by shape alone.

内腔

Transvaginal and transrectal probes bring the array closer to pelvic or prostate targets. A single-plane transvaginal probe, a convex-plus-endocavity dual probe and a bi-plane rectal probe solve different jobs and should not be grouped as one generic option.

D2T vs T8 vs LC1: choose by access path, not by the word “endocavity”

Suresult has three distinct starting points. D2T combines transabdominal convex and endocavity arrays in one wireless device. T8 is the dedicated endocavity microconvex option for transvaginal and close pelvic work. LC1 is a bi-plane rectal probe built around transverse and longitudinal prostate views. Clarius EC7 HD3 is the most direct named competitor in this section because it is also a dedicated wireless endocavity scanner.

The comparison below uses current official Suresult D2T, T8 and LC1 pages plus the official Clarius EC7 HD3 page, checked July 12, 2026. The general PAL, Vscan Air SL, TE Air i3P and Butterfly iQ3 examples above are not endocavity substitutes.

If deep abdominal imaging is the main purchase reason, use the portable convex probe guide rather than buying from a general taxonomy table.

Frequency, depth and footprint must be judged together

Higher frequency generally improves shallow detail but loses penetration faster. Lower frequency travels deeper but does not provide the same near-field resolution. That tradeoff is only part of the decision: the footprint must also fit the acoustic window, and the displayed field must match how the clinician scans.

“The best probe is not the one with the highest number on the product page. It is the one that puts the target in a useful field of view at the depth your team actually scans.”

Fernando Mariz, MD – clinical buyer guidance

Practical rule: use the highest frequency that still reaches the target with a usable field, then confirm that the footprint fits the patient and procedure. Do not buy 24 MHz for a 60 mm target, and do not buy a broad convex footprint for a narrow intercostal window.

Who should not buy one probe first?

A single-probe purchase is a poor fit when…

  • The service line has two equally important but incompatible windows, such as cardiac and deep abdominal imaging.
  • The clinic expects a generalist handheld to replace a high-volume echocardiography, OB or radiology system.
  • Different rooms need simultaneous access; one versatile device still creates a scheduling bottleneck.
  • The procurement team has not confirmed display devices, image export, DICOM/PACS, storage, software costs and cleaning workflow.
  • The team is choosing by the highest MHz, element count or lowest device price without testing the weekly exam mix.

A mixed private clinic may still start with D3Ultra, but a cardiac-heavy lab, a high-frequency aesthetic room or a deep abdominal service may be better served by a dedicated device. Breadth is valuable only when the clinic uses it.

Ultrasound probe quote checklist

  1. List the five most common exams and estimate how many scans each represents in a normal week.
  2. Write the shallowest and deepest targets beside each exam; do not use one generic depth number.
  3. Confirm the required footprint: flat linear, curved convex, small phased, microconvex or endocavity.
  4. Ask which imaging and Doppler modes are included on the exact model, not only the product family.
  5. Confirm display-device compatibility, local storage, export formats, DICOM/PACS path and user accounts.
  6. Separate required software from optional cloud, AI, education or fleet tools and calculate multi-year cost.
  7. Confirm warranty, support route, replacement process, regional availability and every item in the case.
  8. Test the probe on the clinic’s real target depth and workflow before treating a specification table as the final answer.

よくあるご質問

What are the main types of ultrasound probes?

The main probe families are linear, convex or curvilinear, phased array, endocavity and specialized variants such as microconvex. Multi-array handheld probes combine several of those roles in one device.

Which ultrasound probe is best for cardiac imaging?

A phased-array probe is the usual first choice because its small footprint can work through intercostal spaces. In the Suresult range, CD2 is the cardiac-first dual-head option; D3Ultra is the multipurpose alternative when the clinic also needs convex imaging.

Which ultrasound probe is best for vascular access?

A linear probe is the usual starting point for vascular access because it provides a rectangular superficial field. L10H is the routine linear Suresult comparison; CD2 and D3Ultra also include a linear role when the clinic needs cardiac or multipurpose coverage.

What is the difference between L10H, L20Pro and L24Pro?

L10H is a routine 7.5/10 MHz linear probe. L20Pro is a 16/20 MHz high-frequency probe with selectable depth to 40 mm. L24Pro is an 18/24 MHz ultra-high-frequency probe with a smaller 18 x 5 mm footprint and 1-25 mm depth. Choose by target depth and footprint, not by the highest MHz alone.

Is a 3-in-1 ultrasound probe better than separate probes?

It is better for ownership simplicity when one clinic device must cover abdominal, superficial and cardiac windows. Separate dedicated probes can be better when a narrow specialty dominates, several rooms scan at once, or the service needs specialized measurements and workflow.

Does a higher-frequency ultrasound probe always produce a better image?

No. Higher frequency can improve shallow detail but reduces penetration. The image is only useful if the probe reaches the target and its footprint and field of view fit the exam.

Which Suresult probe should a clinic choose for transvaginal or prostate imaging?

Start with T8 when the main workflow is dedicated transvaginal or close pelvic imaging. Choose D2T when one device must combine external convex scanning with transvaginal or transrectal access. Choose LC1 when the urology service needs a bi-plane rectal probe for transverse and longitudinal prostate views and needle guidance.

Which probe should a mixed private clinic buy first?

A mixed clinic should first compare a multipurpose device such as D3Ultra when abdominal, superficial and cardiac scans all matter. If one exam family dominates, start with the dedicated CD2, L10H, L20Pro or L24Pro path instead.
