How the exam comes together, probe to report
Match the head to the chest question.The linear head at 7.5/10 MHz resolves the pleural line and the chest wall. The convex head at 3.2/5.0 MHz reaches the diaphragm and a deep effusion, and the phased head answers the cardiac half of breathlessness.

Find the bright pleural interface between two ribs and fix gain there. Harmonic imaging at 5.0 MHz with 8-step time gain compensation keeps that line crisp before any zone is judged.

Anterior zones separate A-lines from diffuse B-lines, which is the pulmonary edema question. The posterior bases are where effusion and consolidation sit, and the D3Ultra convex head reaches 300 mm for them.

The evidence, three studies checked
- Lung ultrasound gave the right diagnosis in 90.5% of acute respiratory failure cases.
Lichtenstein and Meziere scanned 260 dyspneic patients on admission and found that their ultrasound profiles would have provided correct diagnoses in 90.5% of cases. Multiple anterior diffuse B-lines with lung sliding indicated pulmonary edema with 97% sensitivity and 95% specificity.

In 32 ARDS patients and 10 healthy volunteers, lung ultrasonography had a diagnostic accuracy of 93% for pleural effusion against 47% for bedside chest radiography. For alveolar consolidation the figures were 97% and 75%.
