Handheld ultrasound for pulmonology, proven on real chest scans
Eight unedited captures show what a handheld reads on the chest: the pleural line, diffuse B-lines, an effusion with collapsed lung, and pericardial fluid. Published pricing, software included, no subscription.
簡単な回答
A lung ultrasound machine is a bedside scanner that reads the pleural line, so a clinician can separate pulmonary edema, effusion, consolidation and pneumothorax without a chest film.
- The convex head on the D3Ultra scans from 90 to 300 mm, which is the depth a large effusion and the diaphragm need.
- A linear head at 7.5/10 MHz resolves the pleural line itself, and the D3 family carries that head alongside the convex one.
- ニードルエンハンス and the in-plane puncture guide ship on the D3Ultra, C5SH, C5SH-Pro and L10SH for thoracentesis under vision.
- Every Suresult scanner named on this page records cine loops up to 1,000 frames and exports DICOM, JPEG, PNG or MP4 to local storage.

Captured by Suresult users on their own devices. A D3Ultra cine loop arrived with its case note from the treating physician, and a PD1 clip came from a 2026 buyer submission. The chest scans come from the shared wireless clinical reference library, where each frame carries its own acquisition header. On-screen header fields are demo entries, not patient data.
The pleural line2 windows

The pleural line, the reference for every lung window
A bright horizontal interface sits under the chest wall, and the aerated lung below it returns nothing. Gain and depth are set on this view before any zone is scored, because every lung sign is read against it.
captured on a Suresult wireless probe; the on-screen header reads 83 dB gain, 200 mm depth, harmonic 5.0 MHz, dated 2017-01-07
Two rib shadows framing the pleural window
A rib shadow drops on each side of the window and the bright pleural interface runs between them. Everything below that line is dropout, which is what normal aerated lung returns.
captured on a Suresult wireless probe; the on-screen header reads 83 dB gain, 200 mm depth, harmonic 5.0 MHz, dated 2017-01-07Lung water and pleural fluid4 windows

Diffuse B-lines in acute pulmonary edema on the D3Ultra
Vertical artifacts rise from the pleural line just under 30 mm and run to the bottom of a 160 mm sector. The submitted case note describes an end-stage renal disease patient with orthopnea and hypoxia whose symptoms improved after urgent dialysis.
8.3-second live cine loop on a D3Ultra at 160 mm depth, submitted by the treating physician with the case note
Pleural effusion with collapsed lung inside it
A dark collection sits above the curved diaphragm with an echogenic wedge of collapsed lung floating in it. This is the finding a supine chest film misses most often, and it decides whether a drain goes in.
captured on a Suresult wireless probe; the on-screen header reads 86 dB gain, 160 mm depth, harmonic 5.0 MHz, dated 2018-03-19
A second effusion window from the same reference library
An echogenic wedge of collapsed lung sits inside a dark collection, with the chest wall above it. A second window like this one is what turns a dark stripe into a volume estimate before a needle is chosen.
captured on a Suresult wireless probe in the chest folder of the shared clinical reference library; the on-screen header is cropped and shows only the time 09:23:40
Effusion and atelectasis in a cine loop
A short loop shows the collapsed lung moving inside the fluid with each breath. Motion separates a real effusion from a still hypoechoic mass, which a single frame cannot do.
3.8-second cine loop on a Suresult wireless probe; the on-screen header reads 86 dB gain, 160 mm depth, harmonic 5.0 MHz, dated 2018-03-19The dyspnea differential2 windows

Pleural and pericardial fluid on one sweep
One sweep from the base upward shows fluid outside the lung and fluid around the heart in the same loop. A pulmonology consult for breathlessness can end with a cardiac answer, and this is the window that finds it.
4.9-second cine loop on a Suresult wireless probe; the on-screen header reads 82 dB gain, 160 mm depth, harmonic 5.0 MHz, dated 2018-03-19
Apical four-chamber view on the PD1
All four chambers open from the apex on a dedicated phased-array head at 2.5/2.8/3.6 MHz. A visual estimate of ventricular function is what separates cardiogenic B-lines from a primary lung cause.

Technique basics
How the exam comes together, probe to report
Match the head to the chest question. The linear head at 7.5/10 MHz resolves the pleural line and the chest wall. The convex head at 3.2/5.0 MHz reaches the diaphragm and a deep effusion, and the phased head answers the cardiac half of breathlessness.
Three formats on the D3Ultra
Set gain and depth on the pleural line first.Find the bright pleural interface between two ribs and fix gain there. Harmonic imaging at 5.0 MHz with 8-step time gain compensation keeps that line crisp before any zone is judged.
83 dB gain, harmonic 5.0 MHz on the header
Score the anterior zones, then the posterior bases.Anterior zones separate A-lines from diffuse B-lines, which is the pulmonary edema question. The posterior bases are where effusion and consolidation sit, and the D3Ultra convex head reaches 300 mm for them.
200 mm depth on the header
Guide the needle, then file the study.Needle Enhance with the in-plane guide keeps the thoracentesis needle in the imaging plane on the D3Ultra, C5SH, C5SH-Pro and L10SH. The app then saves the loop and exports it as DICOM or MP4.

What the research says
The evidence, three studies checked
- Lung ultrasound gave the right diagnosis in 90.5% of acute respiratory failure cases.
Lichtenstein and Meziere scanned 260 dyspneic patients on admission and found that their ultrasound profiles would have provided correct diagnoses in 90.5% of cases. Multiple anterior diffuse B-lines with lung sliding indicated pulmonary edema with 97% sensitivity and 95% specificity.
Lichtenstein & Meziere, Chest 2008 - Ultrasound read pleural effusion at 93% accuracy where the chest film read 47%.
In 32 ARDS patients and 10 healthy volunteers, lung ultrasonography had a diagnostic accuracy of 93% for pleural effusion against 47% for bedside chest radiography. For alveolar consolidation the figures were 97% and 75%.
Lichtenstein et al., Anesthesiology 2004 - Ultrasound use lowered the odds of pneumothorax after thoracentesis.
Across 6,605 thoracenteses in 24 studies, the pooled pneumothorax rate was 6.0%, and 34.1% of those pneumothoraces required a chest tube. Ultrasonography use was associated with an odds ratio of 0.3 for pneumothorax.

What is the best handheld ultrasound machine for pulmonology?
The Suresult D3Ultra fits most pulmonology practices, because one 192-element head carries convex, linear and phased formats. The C5SH-Pro suits a clinic where lung and pleural work is the whole caseload.
Which probe do I need for lung ultrasound?
A convex head at 3.2/5.0 MHz reaches the diaphragm and a deep effusion. A linear head at 7.5/10 MHz resolves the pleural line itself. The D3 family carries both in one probe.
Can a handheld ultrasound show B-lines?
Yes. A Suresult D3Ultra handheld recorded an 8.3-second loop of diffuse B-lines in acute pulmonary edema, submitted with its case note. B-lines are read at the pleural line in the anterior zones.
How accurate is lung ultrasound compared with a chest X-ray?
In a 2004 Anesthesiology study of 32 ARDS patients, lung ultrasonography reached 93% diagnostic accuracy for pleural effusion against 47% for bedside chest radiography. Thoracic computed tomography was the reference standard.
Can a handheld ultrasound detect a pneumothorax?
Lung sliding, A-lines and the lung point are the signs, and they are read in real time at the pleural line. In the 2008 BLUE protocol study that profile identified pneumothorax with 81% sensitivity and 100% specificity.
Does ultrasound guidance make thoracentesis safer?
Gordon et al. pooled 6,605 thoracenteses in Arch Intern Med 2010 and found a 6.0% pneumothorax rate, with ultrasonography use carrying an odds ratio of 0.3. Suresult scanners with Needle Enhance keep the needle in the imaging plane.
What depth do I need for a pleural effusion?
A basal effusion in a large patient can sit well past 15 cm. The convex head on the Suresult D3Ultra, C5SH and C5SH-Pro scans from 90 to 300 mm, and the C5B reaches 305 mm.
How much does a lung ultrasound machine cost?
A Suresult handheld suited to chest imaging costs between $1,581 and $4,185, with software included and duties in the checkout price. Competing handhelds list at $3,795 to $4,999 before subscription fees.
Is there a subscription fee?
No. Suresult software is included with the scanner, on iOS, Android and Windows. Clarius Essentials is $695 a year, and Butterfly charges $299 or $420 a year depending on the plan.
Can a handheld replace a cart machine in a chest clinic?
No. A Suresult handheld answers the focused chest questions: lung water, effusion volume, consolidation, pneumothorax and needle guidance. Contrast studies, endobronchial ultrasound and full cardiac quantification stay on their own systems.
What is CPT code 76604?
CPT 76604 is the code for ultrasound of the chest, including the mediastinum, in real time with image documentation. Coverage and payment for it are set by each payer, not by the device.
Does the scanner document the study for the record?
Yes. The D3Ultra, D3Pro, D3L, CD2, C5SH, C5SH-Pro, C5B, PD1 and L10SH record cine loops of 100, 200, 500 or 1,000 frames. Each of those Suresult models exports as DICOM, JPEG, PNG or MP4 to local storage.
How long does the battery last on a clinic list?
The Suresult D3Pro, D3L and C5B scan for three hours continuously on a 4,200 mAh battery. The D3Ultra runs two hours on 2,800 mAh, and the C5SH and C5SH-Pro run 1.5 hours.
Which Suresult model separates cardiac from pulmonary breathlessness?
The CD2 pairs a 2.2/3.6 MHz phased head with a linear head, and the D3Ultra adds a phased format to its convex and linear heads. Both read lung zones and a focused echo in one pass.
