Handheld ultrasound for internal medicine, window by window
Liver to lung: eight internal medicine windows captured by buyers on Suresult handhelds, with depth, gain and frequency still on screen. Convex, linear and phased heads on one wireless probe, software included, no subscription.
簡単な回答
A handheld ultrasound for internal medicine is a wireless probe that images chest, abdomen and heart at the bedside during a single patient visit.
- One probe carries three formats: a convex head for the abdomen, a linear head for chest and vessels, a phased head for the heart.
- Convex depth on the D3Ultra runs 90 to 300 mm, and a buyer frame on this page was recorded at the 300 mm end.
- Color Doppler, pulsed-wave Doppler, M-mode and DICOM export are included on all eight models in the table below, with no software subscription.

Liver2 windows

Subcostal liver window on the D3Ultra
The first window of an abdominal pass, labeled Leber subcostal on screen by a German buyer. Hepatic vessels and the portal region sit inside a 160 mm sector.
captured on a D3Ultra at 3.2 MHz, 160 mm depth, gain 84 dB, dynamic range 40
Longitudinal liver on the D3Ultra
The same buyer in longitudinal section, labeled Leber Laengsschnitt. Harmonic imaging at 5.0 MHz with gain at 90 dB lifts parenchymal texture out of the noise.
captured on a D3Ultra with harmonic imaging at 5.0 MHz, 160 mm depth, gain 90 dBGallbladder and bladder2 windows

Long-axis gallbladder on the D3Ultra
An anechoic gallbladder lying against the liver, sent in by a buyer in July 2026. Right upper quadrant pain is one of the most common questions an internist brings to a probe.
captured on a D3Ultra at 3.2 MHz, 160 mm depth, gain 81 dB, dynamic range 80
Bladder and prostate in transverse on the D3Ultra
A filled bladder with the prostate beneath it, measured on screen at 33.37 mm and 43.62 mm. Calipers run in the app, so a retention question is answered without a second device.
captured on a D3Ultra with harmonic imaging at 5.0 MHz, 160 mm depth, two on-screen calipers腎臓2 windows

Right kidney at 300 mm on the D3Ultra
The depth scale on this frame reads 300 mm, the top of the convex range, with gain pushed to 96 dB. It is the window that shows what the probe does on a large abdomen.
captured on a D3Ultra with harmonic imaging at 5.0 MHz, 300 mm depth, gain 96 dB
Dilated right renal collecting system on a Suresult convex head
An anechoic branching collecting system inside the right kidney, seen through the liver on an iPhone. Hydronephrosis is a finding that changes the same-day plan for a rising creatinine.
captured on a Suresult convex head in the iOS app, depth scale to 220 mm, app version 3.6.47Vessels and neck2 windows

Inferior vena cava on the D3Ultra
The cava running toward the right atrium, labeled Vena Cava by the buyer. Caval caliber and respiratory collapse read volume status before fluid is given.
captured on a D3Ultra at 3.2 MHz, 160 mm depth, gain 84 dB
Distal common carotid artery on the D3Ultra
The far wall of the distal common carotid with an intima-media caliper reading 0.65 mm. A linear head puts atherosclerosis screening into the same visit as the abdominal pass.
captured on a D3Ultra linear head at 7.5 MHz, 40 mm depth, gain 58 dB, intima-media length 0.65 mm on screen

Technique basics
How the exam comes together, probe to report
Start with the convex head and 160 mm of depth.Liver, kidney, gallbladder, bladder and free fluid all sit inside a 160 mm sector on an average adult. Open the depth only when the far field is cut off.
D: 160 mm on the D3Ultra header
Set gain from the live control bar, not a menu.Gain, depth, harmonic imaging and denoise sit on the same screen as the image. A 40 mm neck window on this page reads 58 dB, and the 300 mm kidney window reads 96 dB.
Gain+ and Gain- on the live bar; 58 dB at 40 mm, 96 dB at 300 mm
Turn harmonic imaging on for parenchyma. The longitudinal liver and kidney frames here read F: H5.0 MHz, the harmonic setting. Harmonics cut haze in the near field, which matters most on a heavy abdomen.
F: H5.0 MHz in the header marks the harmonic setting
Measure on the device, then export. Two orthogonal calipers give a size in millimeters without leaving the app. This buyer measured 117.75 mm and 100.99 mm on an Android phone in French.
Measure menu, JPEG, PNG, MP4 or DICOM out
What the research says
The evidence, three studies checked
- A pocket scan at admission corrected, verified or added a diagnosis in more than one in three patients.
Among 199 patients examined after emergency medical admission, resident pocket-size ultrasound changed the primary diagnosis in 6.5% of patients and added an important second diagnosis in 24.0%.
Andersen et al., J Ultrasound Med 2015 - Lung ultrasound separated cardiac from pulmonary dyspnea on an internal medicine ward.
In 130 consecutive internal medicine patients, a generalized interstitial syndrome on lung ultrasound separated cardiac from pulmonary dyspnea with 93.75% sensitivity and 86.11% specificity.
Perrone et al., Eur J Intern Med 2017 - For pneumonia in older inpatients, bedside lung ultrasound was more accurate than chest x-ray.
In 169 multimorbid patients averaging 83 years of age, lung ultrasound reached 0.90 diagnostic accuracy for pneumonia against 0.67 for chest x-ray.

What is the best handheld ultrasound for internal medicine?
The Suresult D3Ultra is the strongest fit, because one probe carries convex, linear and phased heads. Abdomen, chest and heart are then scanned without changing devices.
Can one handheld ultrasound cover lung, abdomen and heart?
Yes. The Suresult D3Ultra switches between a convex head for the abdomen and a linear head for the chest wall. A phased head on the same probe covers the cardiac windows.
How deep does a handheld ultrasound scan for abdominal work?
The Suresult D3Ultra convex head is specified from 90 mm to 300 mm. A buyer capture on this page was recorded at 300 mm on a right kidney.
Does lung ultrasound help an internist decide why a patient is short of breath?
Yes. Perrone et al., Eur J Intern Med 2017 studied 130 internal medicine patients. A generalized interstitial syndrome on lung ultrasound separated cardiac from pulmonary dyspnea with 93.75% sensitivity and 86.11% specificity.
Is bedside ultrasound accurate enough for pneumonia on a medical ward?
In Ticinesi et al., Medicine (Baltimore) 2016, lung ultrasound reached 0.90 diagnostic accuracy for pneumonia against 0.67 for chest x-ray in 169 older multimorbid inpatients. It is a bedside adjunct alongside standard imaging.
How long does a bedside internal medicine scan take?
Andersen et al., J Ultrasound Med 2015, PMID 25792578, timed resident pocket-size examinations. The median was 5.7 minutes for the cardiac examination and 4.7 minutes for the abdominal examination.
How much does a handheld ultrasound for internal medicine cost?
Suresult publishes a price for each three-format model: D3 $2,232, D3L $2,418, D3Pro $2,697 and D3Ultra $2,976. Clarius publishes the C3 HD3 at $3,795 and Butterfly publishes the iQ3 at $3,899.
Is there a subscription with a Suresult scanner?
No. Color Doppler, pulsed-wave Doppler, M-mode, measurements, needle guides and DICOM export are included. Clarius Essentials is published at $695 per year, and Butterfly membership at $299 or $420 per year.
Which Suresult model suits an abdomen-first internist?
The C5SH-Pro is the convex-only model, with 256 elements, 64 channels and a 90 mm to 300 mm depth range. It suits a physician whose questions are liver, kidney, aorta and free fluid.
Can a handheld ultrasound measure bladder volume?
Yes. A convex model such as the Suresult D3Ultra images the filled bladder and measures its dimensions with on-screen calipers. A capture on this page carries two calipers in a bladder and prostate view.
Does the scanner work on Windows as well as a phone?
Yes. Suresult software runs on iOS, Android and Windows, and the same probe pairs with each. The captures on this page were recorded in the iOS app.
What does a handheld ultrasound not replace in internal medicine?
A handheld answers focused questions such as free fluid, hydronephrosis, B-lines or pericardial effusion. Full organ staging, contrast studies and formal echocardiography stay with a cart system.
Does a Suresult scanner export images into a patient record?
Yes. The D3, D3L, D3Pro, D3Ultra, C5SH, C5SH-Pro, CD2 and L10H save stills and cine loops of 100 to 1,000 frames. Each exports as DICOM, JPEG, PNG or MP4.
Which probe format should an internal medicine buyer start with?
Start with a convex head, because liver, kidney, bladder, aorta and free fluid are the most common internal medicine questions. Linear and phased coverage then comes with a three-format model.
