Liver and abdominal ultrasound machines for gastroenterology
Nine of the eleven gastroenterology captures below name the Suresult model behind them, from a longitudinal liver to a splenic vein read at 300 mm. The other two come from the Suresult reference library, and entry to the specialty starts at $1,581 with software included and no subscription.
簡単な回答
A liver ultrasound machine is a convex-array scanner that shows the liver, gallbladder and upper abdomen at the bedside.
- A convex head at 3.2/5.0 MHz reaches 300 mm, which covers a deep liver in a large adult.
- Color Doppler, power Doppler, pulsed-wave Doppler and M-mode run on the C5SH, C5SH-Pro, D3Ultra and D3Pro.
- Ultrasound identified moderate-severe fatty liver with 84.8% sensitivity and 93.6% specificity against histology.
- The D3Ultra carries convex, linear and phased formats in one 192-element probe, so abdominal and superficial work share a device.

Longitudinal liver on the D3Ultra
The reference hepatic view, labeled on screen in German as a longitudinal liver section. Gain and depth are set on this window before anything else in the exam.
captured on a D3Ultra at 160 mm depth, H5.0 MHz, gain 90 dB, dynamic range 50
Subcostal liver window on the D3Ultra
The same buyer took the liver from below the costal margin at 3.2 MHz, where portal branches and the hepatic surface come into the sector. A lower transmit frequency buys penetration.
captured on a D3Ultra at 160 mm depth, 3.2 MHz, gain 84 dB, enhancement 4
Left hepatic lobe on the D3Ultra
The screen label reads left hepatic lobe, with the abdominal wall layers stacked above the parenchyma. The left lobe is the window a subxiphoid approach reaches first.

Long-axis gallbladder on the D3Ultra
The gallbladder sits as an anechoic pear against liver parenchyma, taken in long axis by a buyer in July 2026. This is the window that answers most biliary questions.
captured on a D3Ultra at 160 mm depth, 3.2 MHz, gain 81 dB, dynamic range 80
Bright liver recorded as fatty change
Liver parenchyma with portal branches running through it, filed in the library as fatty liver. Steatosis is the highest-volume question a gastroenterology clinic asks a scanner.
reference library still at 200 mm depth, 3.5 MHz, gain 74 dB, dynamic range 80; the exact model is not recorded
Anechoic rim around the liver
A dark band separates the liver from the structures around it, recorded in the library as perihepatic ascites. The same window is used to choose a puncture site before drainage.

Color Doppler across hepatic vessels
Flow fills the hepatic vessels red and blue inside the color box on a D3Ultra. Direction and patency are answered here before any spectral trace is taken.
captured on a D3Ultra at 160 mm depth, H5.0 MHz, color gain 50, PRF 0.8 kHz, wall filter 6
Hepatic color flow on the D3Ultra
Two intrahepatic vessels fill blue inside the color box while a vessel beneath the liver fills orange toward the probe. Flow direction is read from the color map before any velocity is taken.
captured on a D3Ultra at 160 mm depth, gain 85 dB, color gain 64, PRF 1.25 kHz, wall filter 3
The same color box on the D3Pro
Two intrahepatic vessels fill blue at 160 mm depth, with a third vessel beneath the liver filling orange. The D3Pro held the same 1.25 kHz color PRF at the same depth.
captured on a D3Pro at 160 mm depth, gain 73 dB, color gain 80, PRF 1.25 kHz, wall filter 62 windows2 windows

Pancreatic region at 240 mm
The buyer labeled this frame as the pancreatic region and named the superior mesenteric artery, the aorta and the vena cava as landmarks. Those vessels are how the pancreas is found.
captured on a D3Ultra at 240 mm depth, H5.0 MHz, gain 83 dB, dynamic range 70
Splenic vein with the depth scale at 300 mm
The same session pushed the convex head to its full depth, with the screen label reading splenic vein. Depth is the specification that decides whether a large abdomen is scannable at all.

Technique basics
How the exam comes together, probe to report
Start with the convex head. The liver, gallbladder and upper abdomen all sit deep, so a 3.2/5.0 MHz convex probe is the first choice rather than a linear one.
Convex 3.2/5.0 MHz
Set 160 mm, then go deeper when the liver runs off screen. Most hepatic views sit inside 160 mm. The C5SH, C5SH-Pro and D3Ultra convex heads are specified to 300 mm, which is what a large abdomen needs.
D: 160 mm, then D: 300 mm on the header
Sweep the liver in two planes, then find the gallbladder.A longitudinal sweep followed by a subcostal fan covers the parenchyma. The gallbladder is then taken in long axis against the liver.
Two planes, then the gallbladder
Add Doppler where the question needs it.Color shows whether a hepatic vessel is patent, pulsed-wave Doppler puts a velocity on it, and power Doppler raises sensitivity to slow flow.

What is the best handheld ultrasound machine for liver imaging?
For daily liver and gallbladder work the Suresult C5SH is the strongest fit: a 192-element convex head specified to 300 mm with color Doppler. The C5SH-Pro carries the same format on 256 elements. For a clinic that also scans lungs and vessels, the D3Ultra adds linear and phased formats.
Which ultrasound probe is used for the liver?
The liver is scanned with a convex probe at 3.2/5.0 MHz, which trades resolution for penetration. A linear probe at 7.5/10 MHz is used for the abdominal wall and superficial structures, not for hepatic parenchyma.
Can a handheld ultrasound show fatty liver?
Yes. Hernaez and colleagues reported in Hepatology in 2011 that ultrasound identified moderate-severe fatty liver with 84.8% sensitivity and 93.6% specificity against histology.
Can a handheld ultrasound find gallstones?
Yes. In eight studies covering 710 emergency patients, bedside ultrasound detected cholelithiasis with 89.8% sensitivity and 88.0% specificity. The gallbladder is imaged in long axis against the liver.
How deep does a handheld convex probe reach?
The Suresult C5SH, C5SH-Pro and D3Ultra convex heads are specified to 300 mm. A buyer capture taken on a Suresult D3Ultra carries a 300 mm depth scale on its header.
How much does a liver ultrasound machine cost?
A Suresult abdominal handheld costs between $1,581 and $4,185, with software included. Clarius publishes the C3 HD3 at $3,795, Butterfly publishes the iQ3 at $3,899, and GE lists the Vscan Air CL starting at $4,999.
Does a handheld scanner do color Doppler on hepatic vessels?
Yes. Color Doppler, power Doppler and pulsed-wave Doppler run on the C5SH, C5SH-Pro, D3Ultra, D3Pro, D3L and D3. A Suresult D3Ultra hepatic color-Doppler capture was recorded at a color PRF of 0.8 kHz.
Can a handheld scanner guide a paracentesis?
The Doppler models carry in-plane and out-of-plane puncture guides on screen, and the C5SH, C5SH-Pro and D3Ultra add needle enhancement. A reusable convex needle guide is listed as a separate accessory. Procedure practice stays the clinician's decision.
What is the real five-year cost of a liver scanner?
Add the device price to five years of any membership fee. The Clarius Essentials membership at $695 a year reaches $3,475 by year five, and Butterfly's Core plan adds $1,495. Suresult abdominal models carry no subscription.
Is a handheld device accurate enough for an abdominal screen?
In 86 acute geriatric patients screened with a hand-held device alongside a high-end system, findings with therapeutic consequences appeared in 23.2% of patients. Gallstones were the most common finding at 32.6%.
Should a gastroenterologist replace the cart machine with a handheld?
A handheld answers focused questions: liver texture, gallbladder appearance, free fluid and vessel patency. Elastography, contrast-enhanced studies and endoscopic ultrasound stay on other equipment.
What is the difference between the C5SH and the C5SH-Pro?
The C5SH carries 192 elements and the C5SH-Pro carries 256, both across 64 channels. Frequency, the 90-300 mm depth range, imaging modes and export formats are identical.
Can a handheld ultrasound image the bowel?
The convex head shows bowel gas, distended loops and free fluid between loops at 3.2/5.0 MHz. The Suresult media library holds no bowel capture, so no bowel image accompanies this answer.
Which platforms run the software?
iOS, Android and Windows all run Suresult software over a dual-band 2.4G and 5G Wi-Fi link. An existing phone or tablet works as the display.
Does a Suresult abdominal scanner export into the record?
Yes. Every abdominal model exports JPEG, PNG, MP4 and DICOM, and stores cine loops of 100 to 1,000 frames on the connected device.
