How the exam comes together, probe to report

    The liver, gallbladder and upper abdomen all sit deep, so a 3.2/5.0 MHz convex probe is the first choice rather than a linear one.

  • Ultrasound detects moderate-severe fatty liver against histology.

    Across 49 studies and 4,720 participants, ultrasound identified moderate-severe fatty liver with 84.8% sensitivity and 93.6% specificity, compared with histology. The area under the summary ROC curve was 0.93.

    In a review of eight studies covering 710 patients, bedside ultrasound performed by emergency physicians detected cholelithiasis with 89.8% sensitivity and 88.0% specificity.
