Buying a diagnostic ultrasound is easier than most buyers assume — and harder than the checkout button suggests. Here is how the three purchase channels actually work, and what the price you see does and does not include.
Every statement about a brand’s store — including Suresult’s — comes from that brand’s own store, policy, or support pages, accessed July 11, 2026 and listed in Sources.

In 2026 you can buy a portable ultrasound machine three ways: direct from the manufacturer’s online store, through an authorized dealer or distributor, or on a general marketplace. For major handheld brands, buying direct is now common — most run their own online stores with public prices in at least the United States. The real differences hide after the click: most brand stores serve only the US or a few regions, most displayed prices exclude shipping, import duties, or both, and several stores restrict purchase to verified healthcare providers. The exception in this comparison is Suresult, whose single store ships to most countries worldwide with the checkout total covering delivery, customs clearance, duties, and taxes, and where individual buyers are welcome (Suresult manufactures handhelds and publishes this guide — see the disclosure below).
This guide covers the buying process. To choose the device itself, start with the top 10 handheld ultrasound machines; for current per-brand pricing, the Handheld-Ultraschall-Preisführer. For a store-by-store ranking of what the delivered total actually covers, see the handheld ultrasounds you can buy online in 2026.
The quick list: what decides your channel

Your three options
Direct, dealer, or marketplace: how each channel works
Manufacturer-direct
The default for handhelds in 2026
- Factory-new unit, full manufacturer warranty, public pricing
- You deal with the company that made the device — support and returns have one address
- What to check: which countries the store serves, and whether the total includes shipping, duties, and taxes
Dealer / distributor
Quotes and regional pricing
- The right channel for institutional procurement, tenders, service contracts, and local-language support
- Pricing arrives as a quote and varies by country — Clarius, for example, tells buyers outside its store regions that distributor pricing “will vary due to regulatory requirements, taxes, duties, shipping”
- What to check: authorization from the manufacturer, what the quote includes, and delivery time
Marketplace
Amazon, eBay, wholesale sites
- Listings range from manufacturers’ official storefronts to gray-market resellers and used equipment
- Manufacturer warranties may not follow a device sold outside authorized channels — confirm before paying
- What to check: who the seller actually is, new versus used, and whether the manufacturer will honor support
All three channels are legitimate paths to a real device. The failure mode is mixing their expectations — marketplace prices with direct-channel warranty assumptions, or distributor quotes compared against store totals that exclude duties.
The checkout test · What happens after you click buy
Eight brand stores, three questions: where do they sell, what does the total include, who may buy?
Every row comes from that brand’s own store, policy, or support pages, accessed July 11, 2026 (links in Sources). Dollar figures live in our price guide — this table is about what the checkout experience actually is.
One store for most destinations (currently excluding Russia, Ukraine, and Pakistan). Policy: “The price you pay at checkout already includes shipping, customs clearance, duties, and applicable taxes” — Suresult coordinates customs clearance, and orders arrive “with no hidden fees on arrival.” Personal buyers need no tax ID except in Brazil and Italy.
GE’s US shop shows public pricing and calculates applicable US taxes at checkout — its FAQ states the order total includes tax. Shipping scope is limited to the continental US, Alaska, and Hawaii, buying requires a verified account registration, and international buyers are routed through GE’s sales channels.
Public prices on a North-America online storefront; the global TE Air pages elsewhere offer “Ask for a quote” through local Mindray organizations. We found no public statement on whether the displayed price includes tax or shipping.
Direct stores with public prices in five regions. Its purchase terms state prices “do not include any sales, use or similar taxes,” which the customer pays or reimburses. Buyers outside the five store regions are routed to authorized local distributors, with pricing that varies by country.
Genuine direct purchase with public pricing in its store countries — but a support article restricts purchase to healthcare providers, a software membership is a step in the checkout itself, and shipping is “calculated at checkout.” Outside its listed countries you can only reserve a device.
The widest single-store shipping list among the seven competitors — but its shipping terms state the retail price “doesn’t include taxes, VAT or other hidden charges from customers’ local customs regulations”: international buyers settle duties themselves on arrival.
Public prices, but the store FAQ limits purchase to US-licensed practitioners and facilities, and the product page states pricing “is valid for customers located in the United States only.”
The one major brand that does not show public prices: Lumify transducers sit in a professional store behind a healthcare-professional interstitial and account registration. Other countries route through Philips’s local sales organizations.
The pattern: direct purchase is widely available, but no competitor store combines worldwide reach with an all-inclusive delivered total. Regional stores + excluded taxes/duties + provider gates are the norm — which is why comparing checkout totals across brands, not list prices, is the only fair comparison.
The honest rule of this market: compare delivered totals, not product-page numbers.

What buying direct actually looks like, step by step
Suresult’s store is the worked example here — it is the process this guide can document end to end from published policies, and the model we believe every manufacturer should offer. Each step quotes the governing policy page.
- The checkout total is the final number. Per Suresult’s shipping and tax policy: “The price you pay at checkout already includes shipping, customs clearance, duties, and applicable taxes.” No freight quote, no broker invoice, no surprise line items later. (Promotions can make the button total lower than the listed price — the button is what you pay.)
- Your order ships within 24 hours. Typical delivery is 3–10 business days after shipment, by tracked express courier — DHL, FedEx, or UPS depending on destination.
- Customs clearance is coordinated for you. Suresult coordinates the clearance process for supported destinations — you do not file import paperwork. Individual buyers need no tax ID in most countries; Brazil and Italy require a personal tax ID for clearance.
- Delivery to your door, nothing due on arrival. The policy commitment: orders are “delivered with no hidden fees on arrival.” If a courier ever asks you to pay a fee for a supported-destination order, that is Suresult’s problem to fix, not the buyer’s.
- After delivery, the guarantees are in writing. Every device carries a 2-year warranty (extensions available), a first-month replacement commitment — a device issue in the first 30 days is resolved with a replacement — and a 30-day return window. One honest caveat: return shipping on a change-of-mind return is buyer-paid, which is standard for medical devices; we say it here so nothing in this guide implies otherwise.

The other channels, honestly
Marketplaces: four questions before you pay
Amazon and eBay carry real handheld ultrasounds — including some manufacturers’ official storefronts — alongside gray-market imports and used units. None of that makes marketplaces bad; it makes them a channel where the buyer does the verifying. Four questions settle it:
Dealers and distributors: when they are the right call
Buying direct is not a good fit for every buyer. If you are buying for a hospital system, answering a tender, or need on-site service contracts and local-language support, the distributor channel exists for you — and manufacturers themselves route non-store regions to it. Expect quote-based pricing that genuinely varies by country: regulatory registration, import costs, and local service all price in. Two fair checks: ask the manufacturer to confirm the dealer is authorized, and ask the dealer what the quote includes — device, probes, training, service, duties — so you can compare it against a direct store’s delivered total.
Trust, verified
How to verify any ultrasound seller in five checks
- Regulatory records you can open. A legitimate seller shows its records rather than describing them. Suresult’s are collected on one page — FDA 510(k), EU Declaration of Conformity, EU MDR quality-system certificate, and more, each as a viewable document: certifications & compliance. Whatever brand you buy, expect the equivalent.
- Warranty terms in writing, with durations and what voids them. “Full warranty” in a listing is not a term sheet. Look for the policy page.
- A return policy with numbers in it. Days, conditions, who pays return shipping. A seller that hides this plans to argue later.
- A company you can identify. Manufacturer or reseller? Which legal entity, which country, which support channel? The about page and policy pages should agree with each other.
- A support test before you buy. Send a real pre-sales question. The speed and quality of that answer is the best preview of after-sales support you will get.
Who can actually order
Can individuals buy, or only businesses?
It depends entirely on the store. Several manufacturer stores gate purchases — Butterfly restricts buying to healthcare providers, Vave sells to US-licensed practitioners and facilities, GE requires verified registration, and Philips puts Lumify behind a professional-account wall. Suresult’s policy is different by design: “Individual buyers are welcome” — in most countries a personal buyer needs no tax ID (Brazil and Italy are the exceptions, requiring a personal tax ID for customs clearance).
Because that gate varies so much by store, we ranked the major sellers on this question alone — who may place the order, which countries each store will actually ship to, and whether duties arrive as a separate bill later — in our companion guide to buying a portable ultrasound online. It also covers the paperwork side for clinicians who need an official invoice for practice accounting.
One important distinction survives whichever store you use: purchasing a device and operating it are different questions. Professional handhelds — including ours — are labeled for professional use, and who may perform diagnostic scanning depends on the device’s labeling and local requirements. If you are buying for a home context, read our home-use ultrasound guide first — it maps exactly who may scan at home in 2026.
Buying probes and replacement probes
For handheld systems, the probe is the machine — the “machine” you are buying is a probe plus the phone or tablet you already own. That means replacement and additional probes are bought through exactly the same three channels as first devices, with the same checkout questions. If you need a second head type (convex for depth, linear for superficial work, phased for cardiac), it is usually cheaper to buy a multi-head probe once than to accumulate single-head probes — compare configurations in Suresult’s store or any manufacturer’s catalog before assuming you need two devices.

Quick answers
Buying questions, answered
Wo kann ich ein tragbares Ultraschallgerät kaufen?
Three places: direct from a manufacturer’s online store (Suresult, GE, Clarius, Butterfly, Mindray, Vave, and EagleView all run stores with public prices in at least one region), through authorized dealers and distributors (quote-based, right for institutional buyers), or on marketplaces like Amazon and eBay (verify the seller and warranty first). Which channel is available to you depends mostly on your country — most brand stores are US-only or regional.
Kann man sich ein eigenes Ultraschallgerät kaufen?
In most cases yes — the practical question is which store will sell to you and who will operate the device. Some manufacturer stores restrict purchase to verified healthcare providers or US-licensed practitioners; Suresult’s store welcomes individual buyers in most countries (Brazil and Italy require a personal tax ID for customs). Note that professional handhelds are labeled for professional use — for the home context specifically, see our home-use guide.
Ist es sicher, ein tragbares Ultraschallgerät bei Amazon oder eBay zu kaufen?
It can be, with verification: identify who the seller actually is, confirm with the manufacturer that the warranty will be honored for that listing, establish whether the unit is new, open-box, or used, and match the exact model against the manufacturer’s site and regulatory records. Gray-market and used listings are the main risks — a device without manufacturer support costs more than it saves.
Can I buy directly from the manufacturer, and how do shipping and customs work?
Yes — direct purchase is the norm in 2026. How customs works depends on the store: some display prices that exclude international duties and taxes entirely (you pay them on arrival), while Suresult’s checkout total includes shipping, customs clearance, duties, and applicable taxes for most destinations, with clearance coordinated by Suresult — delivery typically takes 3–10 business days after shipment. Read any store’s shipping policy before comparing prices.
Where do I get the best warranty and after-sales service?
Buy factory-new through an authorized channel and read the actual policy pages, not the listing bullets. Compare warranty length and extensions, what happens in the first 30 days (Suresult replaces devices with issues in the first month), repair turnaround commitments, and whether support is direct from the manufacturer or through an intermediary. A pre-sales question is the cheapest way to test a seller’s support quality.
How do I verify an ultrasound supplier is legitimate before ordering?
Five checks: regulatory records you can open as documents (Suresult’s certifications page shows what that looks like), warranty terms in writing, a return policy with concrete numbers, a company identity you can trace, and a pre-sales support test. A legitimate manufacturer or dealer passes all five in ten minutes.
What does ordering direct from the manufacturer look like step by step?
At Suresult: the checkout total is final (shipping, clearance, duties, and taxes included for supported destinations); the order ships within 24 hours; delivery runs 3–10 business days by tracked courier; customs clearance is coordinated for you; and the device arrives with nothing due at the door, covered by a 2-year warranty, a first-month replacement commitment, and a 30-day return window (return shipping buyer-paid). Other brands’ direct flows differ mainly in geography and what the total includes.
Can I buy just an ultrasound probe or a replacement probe?
Yes. For handheld systems the probe is the machine, so replacement and additional probes go through the same three channels — and the same checkout questions — as complete devices. If you find yourself needing multiple head types, compare a multi-head probe against buying two single-head devices before ordering.
