Handheld ultrasound for primary care, proven on real clinic scans

The Suresult D3Ultra is the strongest fit for a general practice that scans abdomen, kidney, bladder, lung and neck. It carries convex, linear and phased heads in one 263 g probe. A clinic whose list is mostly abdominal can take the convex-only C5SH instead.

A convex head is the first requirement, because it reaches the liver, kidneys and bladder. A linear head at 7.5 or 10 MHz is the second, for the neck, vessels and soft tissue. The Suresult D3 family puts both heads in a single housing, so no second purchase is needed.

In a study of 20 general practitioners scanning 574 patients, the median point-of-care scan took 5 minutes. Cardiac point-of-care scans in a 2025 review took a median of 8 minutes. Both fit inside a normal appointment.

A handheld convex probe assesses the bladder in the office. The atlas on this page shows a filled bladder with the prostate below it, scanned on a D3Ultra at 16 cm depth. The prostate was measured on screen at 33.4 mm by 43.6 mm. A convex head at 3.2 or 5.0 MHz reaches the bladder in almost every adult.

A 2020 review of 17 studies covered lung ultrasound performed by emergency physicians, internal medicine physicians and intensivists, not by radiologists. Sensitivity for pneumonia was at least 0.91 in 14 of those studies. A separate 2019 review of general practice reported competence in some focused scans after only a few hours of training. B-lines and pleural effusion are the two findings most used in office practice.

The Suresult C5B convex probe is the entry price at $1,581, and the three-format D3Ultra is $2,976. Clarius publishes $3,795 for the C3 HD3, Butterfly publishes $3,899 for the iQ3, and GE publishes a starting price of $4,999 for the Vscan Air CL.

Suresult scanners carry no software subscription, so the app, Doppler, measurements and DICOM export come with the purchase. Clarius publishes an Essentials membership at $695 a year, $1,785 for three years, or $2,500 one time. Butterfly publishes membership plans at $299 and $420 a year, with a $1,500 one-time option covering five years.

One Suresult D3-family probe covers all three regions from a single housing. Its convex head runs 90 to 300 mm for the abdomen, and its phased head images lung and heart. The linear head at 7.5 or 10 MHz covers the neck and vessels. Every buyer capture in this atlas came off that family.

A 2019 systematic review of point-of-care ultrasound in general practice found training programs from 2 to 320 hours. It reported that competence in some focused scans was attained with only a few hours. The same review found focused scans more accurate than comprehensive or screening scans.

An office scanner does not replace the radiology referral; it changes which patients need one. In the 574-patient general practice study, intended referrals to secondary care fell from 49.2% to 25.6% after the scan. A focused answer in the room is not a formal radiology report.

The Suresult C5B at $1,581 is the entry convex probe, with B-mode and power Doppler on 80 elements. The C5SH at $2,139 adds 192 elements, 64 channels and full color Doppler. The C5B reaches 305 mm of depth and the C5SH reaches 300 mm.
