Handheld ultrasound for nephrology, proven at the bedside

This page shows eight unedited nephrology windows captured by Suresult buyers on their own probes, from a right kidney at 160 mm to moderate hydronephrosis. A convex color Doppler scanner with 300 mm of listed depth starts at $2,139.

Every window in the atlas below is an unedited capture shared by a Suresult owner from their own device; the media wall adds clips from the Suresult clinical reference library ·Trusted by 8,717 clinicians →

Kurze Antwort

A handheld ultrasound for nephrology is a wireless convex-array probe that images the kidneys and bladder at the bedside from a phone or tablet.

  • Convex scanning depth on the C5SH is listed at 90 to 300 mm, which covers a deep flank window.
  • The C5SH, C5SH-Pro and D3Ultra all carry color Doppler and pulsed-wave Doppler in the same app.
  • The B4D measures bladder volume and post-void residual across a 50 to 2,000 ml range.
  • The D3Ultra images lung B-lines and the heart on the same probe body as the kidneys.

Technique basics

How the exam comes together, probe to report

  1. Start with the convex head in the flank.Start with the convex head in the flank.

The kidneys sit deep and behind the ribs, so a convex array at 3.2 or 5.0 MHz is the head that reaches them. A linear head is too shallow for an adult kidney.

    Convex 3.2/5.0 MHz
  2. Set depth at 160 mm, then open it if the kidney is deep.Set depth at 160 mm, then open it if the kidney is deep.

Most adult kidneys sit inside a 160 mm field. The C5SH and D3Ultra open to 300 mm when body habitus or a high kidney needs it.

D: 160 mm on the header
  3. Sweep the whole kidney before you call it.Sweep the whole kidney before you call it.

A long-axis sweep from the upper pole to the lower pole is what finds a dilated collecting system. One frozen frame through the sinus can read as hydronephrosis in a kidney that is not obstructed.

    Both poles, one sweep
  4. Finish on the bladder and the vena cava.Finish on the bladder and the vena cava.

The bladder answers outlet obstruction and post-void residual, and the vena cava reads volume status. The B4D reports bladder volume directly across a 50 to 2,000 ml range.

What the research says

The evidence, three studies checked

  • Moderate hydronephrosis on point-of-care ultrasound is highly specific for a stone.

A meta-analysis of five high-quality studies covering 1,773 emergency patients found pooled sensitivity of 70.2% and specificity of 75.4% for nephrolithiasis. The finding of moderate or greater hydronephrosis reached 94.4% specificity.

Wong et al., Acad Emerg Med 2018
  • Scanning first cut radiation without missing high-risk diagnoses.

A trial randomized 2,759 emergency patients with suspected nephrolithiasis to point-of-care ultrasonography, radiology ultrasonography or CT. Six-month cumulative radiation was significantly lower in both ultrasonography groups, and 30-day high-risk diagnoses with complications did not vary by imaging method.

    Smith-Bindman et al., N Engl J Med 2014
  • Lung congestion in hemodialysis patients is usually silent.

Among 392 hemodialysis patients scored by lung ultrasound, 45% had moderate-to-severe pulmonary congestion, and 71% of those were asymptomatic or had slight heart-failure symptoms. Very severe congestion carried a 4.2-fold adjusted risk of death.

What is the best handheld ultrasound for nephrology?

The Suresult C5SH is the strongest fit for nephrology, because it pairs a 192-element convex head at 3.2/5.0 MHz with color and pulsed-wave Doppler. Listed convex depth is 90 to 300 mm, and the C5SH starts at $2,139. A clinician who also scans lungs and the heart should take the D3Ultra instead.

Which probe type do the kidneys need?

The kidneys need a convex array. A convex head at 3.2 or 5.0 MHz reaches renal cortex and sinus through a flank or subcostal window. A linear head is too shallow for an adult kidney.

Can a handheld ultrasound show hydronephrosis?

Yes. This page shows moderate right hydronephrosis captured on a D3Ultra by its owner. A 2018 meta-analysis found that moderate or greater hydronephrosis was 94.4% specific for a stone in renal colic.

How much does a renal ultrasound machine cost?

A Suresult convex color Doppler scanner starts at $2,139 for the C5SH, with software included. Clarius lists the C3 HD3 at $3,795 plus an Essentials membership at $695 per year.

Is color Doppler included, or charged separately?

Color Doppler, power Doppler and pulsed-wave Doppler are included on the C5SH, C5SH-Pro and D3Ultra. Suresult charges no subscription for Doppler, measurements or DICOM export.

How deep does a handheld convex probe scan?

The C5SH and C5SH-Pro list 90 to 300 mm of convex depth. One capture on this page was recorded at a 300 mm depth setting on a D3Ultra.

Can a handheld measure bladder volume and post-void residual?

Yes. The Suresult B4D is a 4D bladder scanner that reports bladder volume and post-void residual across a 50 to 2,000 ml range. A scan takes under two seconds.

Does the same probe cover dialysis-related volume overload?

Yes. The D3Ultra images lung B-lines and the heart on the same probe body. A 2013 study of 392 hemodialysis patients found moderate-to-severe lung congestion in 45% of them.

Can a handheld check an arteriovenous fistula?

Yes. A linear head at 7.5 or 10 MHz images a superficial arteriovenous fistula. The D3Ultra linear head reaches 100 mm of depth, and the linear heads on the D3Pro and D3L reach 80 mm.

Which platforms does the software run on?

Suresult software runs on iOS, Android and Windows for the C5SH, C5SH-Pro and D3Ultra. The B4D bladder scanner runs on Apple iOS.

Does it export DICOM for the patient record?

Yes. Every Suresult convex scanner exports JPEG, PNG, MP4 and DICOM, and holds cine loops of up to 1,000 frames in local storage.

Who manufactures these kidney ultrasound color Doppler scanners?

Suresult is the brand behind these renal color Doppler scanners and the seller of record for them. The scanners are manufactured under an ISO 13485 quality system, and the certification files list FDA 510(k) clearance and CE marking under EU MDR.

Does Suresult sell these renal scanners direct?

Yes. Suresult sells its handheld scanners direct, with the price published on each product page. The checkout price covers shipping, duties and taxes, so no distributor sits between the clinician and the device.

Is a handheld enough, or does nephrology need a cart system?

A handheld answers focused renal questions: kidney size, hydronephrosis, bladder volume and gross parenchymal change. Renal artery duplex quantification and contrast-enhanced renal imaging stay on a cart system.

Which Suresult convex model is the simplest?

The C5B is the simplest convex model: 80 elements, B-mode and power Doppler, and 90 to 305 mm of depth. It carries neither color Doppler nor pulsed-wave Doppler, so it suits structural work only.

Do handheld renal scans reduce radiation for a patient with flank pain?

A 2014 trial of 2,759 emergency patients found six-month radiation exposure significantly lower when imaging started with ultrasonography rather than CT. High-risk diagnoses with complications did not vary by imaging method.
