Ultrasound for pain management, proven on real guided-injection frames

This page shows six unedited scans from Suresult handhelds, from a median nerve measured at the wrist to a needle advancing live at 10 MHz. The L10, the entry linear model with color Doppler and both puncture guides, is $1,395, software included and no subscription.

Every scan on this page was recorded on this Suresult hardware family, by clinicians who bought it and by a clinical trainer who scans with it. Each clip is trimmed to the scan itself. ·Trusted by 8,717 clinicians →

Kurze Antwort

An ultrasound machine for pain management is a high-frequency imaging scanner that shows the nerve, joint or tendon before the needle enters. It is a diagnostic imaging device, not a therapeutic ultrasound unit sold for pain relief at home.

  • The L14Pro runs 10/14 MHz with depth steps at 20, 40, 60 and 80 millimeters, which covers most interventional pain targets.
  • The L14Pro, L10H, L10SH and L10 each carry in-plane and out-of-plane puncture guides with an on-screen grid.
  • The Suresult app prints the guide position in millimeters beside the trajectory line, and marks the out-of-plane target as a circle with a radius.
  • The L10H adds visualized needle guidance and a five-hour scanning battery for a full injection list.

Technique basics

How the exam comes together, probe to report

  1. Start with a high-frequency linear head.Start with a high-frequency linear head.

Most interventional pain targets sit within 40 millimeters of the skin. A linear array at 10 MHz or higher separates the nerve from the tendon beside it, which a convex head blurs.

Linear, 10/14 MHz or 16/20 MHz
  2. Survey the target, then set depth to it.Survey the target, then set depth to it.

Bring depth down until the target fills the upper half of the screen. The atlas frames on this page were captured at 20 mm and 40 mm, which is the working range for most blocks and joint injections.

D: 20 mm or 40 mm on the app header
  3. Open the puncture guide and set the line.Open the puncture guide and set the line.

The guide draws the trajectory over the live image and prints its position in millimeters beside it. Out-of-plane mode gives a target circle with a radius instead of a line.

    In-Plane, Out-Plane, Enhance, Grid
  4. Advance in plane and watch the shaft.Advance in plane and watch the shaft.

Keep the needle in the scan plane so the whole shaft stays bright, and confirm the tip before injecting. Color Doppler marks the vessel to avoid on the way in.

What the research says

The evidence, three studies checked

  • Ultrasound guidance cut the pain of the injection itself.

In 148 painful joints randomized to palpation or sonographic guidance, guidance produced 43.0% less procedural pain and 58.5% lower pain scores at two weeks.

Sibbitt et al., J Rheumatol 2009
  • Median nerve area at the wrist has a published cutoff.

A meta-analysis of 28 trials and 3,995 wrists found 9 square millimeters the best single cutoff for median nerve area at the carpal tunnel inlet. Sensitivity was 87.3% and specificity 83.3%.

Tai et al., Ultrasound Med Biol 2012
  • An ultrasound-guided genicular block beat placebo on knee pain.

In a placebo-controlled trial of 59 patients with knee osteoarthritis, pain scores at two weeks were 2.7 for the genicular nerve block against 4.7 for saline.

What is an ultrasound machine for pain management?

An ultrasound machine for pain management is a high-frequency imaging scanner that shows nerves, joints and tendons so an injection can be placed under direct vision.

Does Suresult sell a home ultrasound machine for pain relief?

No. Suresult sells diagnostic imaging probes for clinicians. Therapeutic ultrasound units marketed for home pain relief are a different product category.

Which Suresult model is the default for interventional pain?

The L14Pro is Suresult's default model for interventional pain, running 10/14 MHz with depth steps at 20, 40, 60 and 80 millimeters.

How does the puncture guide work on a Suresult probe?

The Suresult app draws a trajectory line over the live image and prints the target position in millimeters beside it. In out-of-plane mode the app places a target circle with a radius instead of a line.

Can a handheld probe reach deep gluteal and lumbar targets?

Yes. The D3Ultra convex head reaches 300 millimeters, and the C5SH-Pro convex head covers 90 to 300 millimeters.

What median nerve area suggests carpal tunnel syndrome?

Tai and colleagues pooled 28 trials and 3,995 wrists on carpal tunnel syndrome. A median nerve area of 9 square millimeters or more at the tunnel inlet was the best single diagnostic criterion, at 87.3% sensitivity and 83.3% specificity.

Does ultrasound guidance change the result of a joint injection?

Sibbitt and colleagues randomized 148 painful joints and reported 43.0% less procedural pain and 58.5% lower pain scores at two weeks.

Is there a subscription fee on a Suresult scanner?

No. Suresult includes the imaging software, Doppler, measurements and DICOM export with the scanner, with no annual plan.

What does a Suresult pain-management scanner cost?

The L14Pro is $3,441 and the L10H is $2,325. Both prices are published on the product page.

Which devices do buyers compare against Suresult for pain work?

Buyers compare the Clarius L15 HD3 at $3,795, the Butterfly iQ3 at $3,899 and the GE Vscan Air CL from $4,999.

Does the scanner work with an iPhone or a Windows laptop?

Yes. Suresult linear probes run on iOS, Android and Windows over dual-band Wi-Fi built into the probe.

Is a needle guide bracket available for the linear probes?

Yes. Suresult sells a reusable biopsy needle guide for linear probes at $464.

How long does the battery last during an injection list?

The L14Pro scans for 4 hours continuously and the L10H for 5 hours, both on a built-in lithium battery.

Can the images be exported for the patient record?

Yes. The L14Pro exports JPEG, PNG, MP4 and DICOM files, and holds cine loops up to 1000 frames.

Which model suits superficial nerve entrapment?

The L20Pro runs 16/20 MHz with depth steps from 10 to 40 millimeters, which suits superficial nerves and small joints.

Does an ultrasound-guided knee block help osteoarthritis pain?

Shanahan and colleagues reported pain scores of 2.7 against 4.7 for placebo at two weeks, with the effect fading by week twelve.
