Choose a handheld ultrasound by the Doppler modes your exams need (Color, Power, PW, CW and tissue Doppler) and by what it costs to switch every mode on. I compare eight makers and six sibling models, with US prices checked October 15, 2026.
Périmètre de l’évaluation : With deep ultrasound knowledge, I scored the published Doppler modes, probe formats, software plans and Doppler measurement tools of Suresult D3Ultra, Suresult PD2, Suresult D2T, EchoNous Kosmos, Exo Iris, GE Vscan Air SL, GE Vscan Air CL, Butterfly iQ3, Mindray TE Air i3P, Clarius PAL HD3, Clarius PA HD3, Clarius L7 HD3, Philips Lumify L12-4 and Philips Lumify S4-1 using manufacturer records checked October 15, 2026.
Quick answer: which portable Doppler ultrasound should you buy?
Suresult D3Ultra ($3,200) is the best portable Doppler ultrasound in my eight-maker comparison at 81/100: one wireless probe carries convex, linear and phased heads, and Color, Power and PW Doppler are included with no subscription. For cardiac work that needs CW and tissue Doppler, the EchoNous Kosmos ranks second (Kosmos Mobile from $7.7K, checked October 15, 2026). The Exo Iris ($5,499) ranks third with Auto Color and Auto PW on a 3-in-1 probe. [1][2][3]
Butterfly sells Power and PW in its Advanced membership ($420 a year or $1,500 one-time), and Clarius sells PW in Essentials ($695 a year or $2,500 one-time). For CW on a cordless phased probe, the Suresult PD2 ($2,490) lists CW next to Color, Power and PW at 120 g. [4][5][6]
Looking for a pencil or fetal Doppler that plays flow as sound? The device-type table separates them from imaging scanners.
Pencil Doppler, fetal Doppler or Doppler imaging?
Three different products are sold as a “portable Doppler,” and one of them makes an image.
| Type | What you get | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| Pencil (pocket) vascular Doppler | Blood flow played as sound, with a simple trace on some models; no ultrasound image | Clinicians who need to hear whether flow is present |
| Fetal Doppler | Fetal heart sounds as audio; no ultrasound image | Listening to fetal heart tones |
| Imaging ultrasound with Color Doppler | A B-mode picture with a color flow map, plus Power, PW or CW on many models | Clinicians who need to see the vessel or the heart, locate flow, and measure velocity |
Everything below covers the third row. If hearing flow answers your clinical question, a pencil Doppler does that job. If you need to see where flow is, which way it moves, and how fast it travels at a chosen point, you need an imaging scanner with Doppler modes, and the eight makers below are the ones I compared.
Comparison table: eight handheld Doppler scanners
Every scanner here lists Color and PW Doppler; the real differences are CW, tissue Doppler, probe formats, and whether a plan is required to switch PW on.

The 8 best portable Doppler ultrasound scanners, ranked
The ranking rewards documented Doppler modes first, then what it costs to switch them all on, then probe coverage, measurement tools and portability.
01 Suresult D3Ultra — Best Overall for Doppler Across Three Probe Heads
Color · Power · PW · convex + linear + phased · FDA-certified · $3,200
Score: 81/100
$3,200Couleur · Puissance · PW inclus3 heads in 1 probe263 g · 2 hDICOM · sans abonnement
Verdict: Buy the D3Ultra if your Doppler work moves between vessels, abdomen and heart and you want every mode paid for on the day the probe arrives. It is my pick for most clinicians who search for a portable Doppler ultrasound.
- Modes Doppler : Color, Power, PW (plus B and M)
- Probe formats: one wireless probe: a linear head at 7.5/10 MHz reaching 100 mm, plus convex and phased heads at 3.2/5.0 MHz reaching 90–300 mm (the phased sector spans 60°)
- Price and plan: $3,200; no subscription
- Weight / scan time: 263 g; 2 h continuous scanning; wireless charging
Why it ranks here. Doppler exams change footprint as they change organs, and the D3Ultra carries all three footprints. The linear head handles vessels with Color and PW, using the vascular and carotid presets, angle correction and an adjustable sample volume. The convex head reaches abdominal and renal perfusion work, where Power Doppler shows slow flow and PW gives the resistive index. The phased head opens cardiac windows with Color and PW. That combination earns the full 20 points for probe formats. [1]
The second reason is cost. Suresult includes every mode and every measurement in the purchase: “No Subscription Cost. Lifetime Free Software, Unlimited Scans.” The PW package reads PS, ED, TAMAX, TAMEAN, PI, RI and S/D, plus velocity and vessel diameter, inside a set of 27 on-screen measurements that also covers cardiac (LVIDd, LVIDs, EF, SV) and obstetric biometry. Of the eight ranked models, the D3Ultra and the Exo Iris are the two that put three probe formats and every listed Doppler mode into the purchase price. The D3Ultra’s cordless 263 g probe earns 8 portability points to the Iris’s 0, the Iris’s automatic Doppler tools earn it 4 more tool points, and the net is the 4-point gap between 81 and 77. [1]
Day-to-day handling favors bedside Doppler. The probe runs its own Wi-Fi hotspot, so it pairs with an iOS, Android or Windows device without a router or base station. Studies export as DICOM, and cine loops hold up to 1000 frames. The 2-year standard warranty is included, with three- and five-year warranty options at checkout. [1]
Limitations. CW is not in the D3Ultra’s mode list; for high-velocity cardiac jets, the PD2 below lists CW, and so does the Kosmos. The D3Ultra has no automatic Doppler tool: you place the PW gate and set the angle yourself.
Idéal pour : clinicians whose Doppler exams span vessels, abdomen and heart on one device.Skip it if: you need CW (take the PD2) or automatic gate placement (take the Kosmos or the Iris).

02 EchoNous Kosmos — Best for CW, TDI and Automated Cardiac Doppler
Color · Color Power · PW · CW · TDI · Torso-One phased · from $7.7K (Kosmos Mobile)
Score: 79/100
From $7.7K · Kosmos MobileColor · Power · PW · CW · TDIPhased 1.5–4.5 MHz · 30 cm267 g · tablet-poweredAuto Doppler · Auto VTI
Verdict: Buy the Kosmos if cardiac Doppler is your main job and you want CW, tissue Doppler and automatic gate placement in one package.
- Modes Doppler : Doppler couleur, Doppler énergie couleur, PW, CW, TDI
- Probe formats: Torso-One phased array, 1.5–4.5 MHz, 4–30 cm; cardiac, lung, abdominal and OB/GYN presets
- Price and plan: Kosmos Mobile from $7.7K, with an iPad Air or Pro, Essentials Bag, choice of probes, advanced Doppler and AI; Kosmos Plus under $21K (EchoNous, checked October 15, 2026); itemized quote through the “Get pricing” form
- Weight / power: 267 g with cable; powered by the host tablet
Why it ranks here. The Kosmos takes the full 30 points for Doppler breadth: it is the one ranked model in this comparison listing all five modes. CW records high-velocity jets without aliasing, and TDI measures myocardial velocities, so the Kosmos covers the Doppler steps of a focused echo that PW alone leaves open. [2]
Its software earns the full 15 for tools. Auto Doppler places the PW or TDI gate at the LVOT, the mitral, pulmonary and tricuspid valves and their annuli. The AI set also includes Auto VTI, Auto EF (EF plus SV), AI FAST and Auto Preset. For a clinician who records gradients and stroke volume at the bedside, the software places the gate at each of those sites. The Torso-One carries a 5-year warranty. [2]
Limitations. The scored configuration is a single phased format, so vascular and superficial work needs a second probe. The probe is cabled to a tablet and draws its power from it; the Kosmos pairs with tablets rather than phones. Pricing comes as packages and an itemized quote rather than a single checkout price.
Idéal pour : echo-focused clinicians who want CW, TDI and automated Doppler measurements.Skip it if: you scan vessels and abdomen as often as the heart, or you want to scan from a phone.

03 Exo Iris — Best for Automatic Doppler Setup on iPhone
Color · Power · PW · Auto Color · Auto PW · linear + curved + phased · $5,499
Score: 77/100
$5,499 · no subscriptionCouleur · Énergie · PWAuto Color · Auto PW1.5–12 MHz · 30 cm300 g · jusqu’à 2 h
Verdict: Buy the Iris if you scan from an iPhone or iPad and want Auto Color and Auto PW on one probe that covers linear, curved and phased imaging.
- Modes Doppler : Color, Power, PW, with Auto Color and Auto PW (plus B, M, Auto M-mode and Auto eFAST)
- Probe formats: linear, curved and phased imaging from one 2D matrix of 4,096 individually controlled pMUTs; 1.5–12 MHz; to 30 cm
- Price and plan: $5,499 (Exo store, checked October 15, 2026); no subscription; Exo Works Connect optional at $500/year
- Weight / scan time: 300 g; up to 2 h; IP67; 1-meter drop tested; cable connection (Lightning and USB-C)
Why it ranks here. The Iris ties the D3Ultra on two criteria: all three probe formats and every listed Doppler mode included at purchase. Its automatic tools lift it to 12 points for measurement tools: Auto Color and Auto PW sit in its mode list next to Auto M-mode and Auto eFAST. Exo’s store wording is direct: “No login. No subscription. AI software included.” [3][8]
SweepAI Cardiac comes with the device and measures LVEF, septal and posterior wall thickness, and IVC diameter. With 22 exam types and an IP67 rating, the Iris suits clinicians who move between departments and want one rugged probe. [3]
Limitations. The Iris connects by cable and weighs 300 g, which scores 0 for portability under my rules. It runs on iOS and iPadOS. CW and TDI are not in Exo’s mode list, so valve-gradient work goes to the Kosmos or the Suresult PD2.
Idéal pour : Apple-based clinicians who want Auto Color and Auto PW across 22 exam types.Skip it if: you use Android or Windows, or you need CW.

Verdict: Buy the SL if you want cardiac and vascular imaging from one cordless dual-head probe at a fixed price with no required plan.
- Modes Doppler : Color, PW (plus B and M), with PW angle correction and a sample-volume gate
- Probe formats: wireless dual-head: a 1.6–3.7 MHz sector head reaching 24 cm and a 3–12 MHz linear head reaching 8 cm
- Price and plan: $4,999 (GE HealthCare US shop, checked October 15, 2026); no required plan; Innovations optional at $500/year or $1,299 for 3 years (Caption Guidance, Caption Interpretation AutoEF, HD-SRI); Digital Tools optional at $1,080 for 3 years
- Weight / scan time: 218 ± 3 g; up to 50 min; wireless charging; iOS and Android phones and tablets
Why it ranks here. The SL covers the heart and the vessels with two heads and no plan required for Doppler, which earns the full 25 for unlock cost and 13 for formats. At 218 g and cordless, it earns 8 of 10 for portability. GE includes a 3-year standard warranty, and the scanner pairs with phones as well as tablets. [9]
Limitations. Power Doppler and CW are not in GE’s mode list for the Vscan Air, which holds breadth to 14. Scan time is up to 50 min, the shortest listed in this comparison. The AI tools sit in the optional Innovations plan.
Idéal pour : clinicians who split time between cardiac and vascular checks and want one cordless probe.Skip it if: you rely on Power Doppler for low-flow perfusion work.

Score: 66/100
$3,899 + abonnementPower · PW with AdvancedPhased · convex · linear300 g · jusqu’à 2 hVTI · Cardiac Output
Verdict: Buy the iQ3 if you want one probe for every preset and you are ready to pay the one-time Advanced fee for Power and PW.
- Modes Doppler : Color with Core; Power, PW, VTI and Cardiac Output with Advanced; the obstetric Umbilical Artery Doppler tool also sits in Advanced
- Probe formats: single Ultrasound-on-Chip probe, 1–12 MHz, with phased, convex and linear formats; abdomen to 30 cm, Deep Vein preset 8 cm, Carotid preset 6 cm
- Price and plan: $3,899 (Butterfly, checked October 15, 2026) plus a required membership: Core $299/year, Advanced $420/year, or Advanced one-time $1,500, which Butterfly states covers 5 years of software access; $5,399 for the device with one-time Advanced
- Weight / scan time: 300 g; wired to a phone or tablet; up to 2 h; iOS and Android
Why it ranks here. The iQ3 earns the full 20 for formats because one chip produces phased, convex and linear imaging. Its Advanced tier adds VTI and Cardiac Output, which earns tool credit for cardiac Doppler. The Deep Vein and Carotid presets give vascular users defined starting depths, and the warranty runs 3 years with an optional 2 more. [11][4]
Limitations. A membership is required even for Color, and Power and PW need Advanced, which holds unlock cost to 15. The probe is wired and weighs 300 g. CW is not in Butterfly’s mode list.
Idéal pour : clinicians who want one probe for every body region and accept a one-time software purchase.Skip it if: you want every Doppler mode with the device alone.

06 Mindray TE Air i3P — Best Cordless Phased Probe with Tissue Doppler
Color · Power · PW · TDI option · wireless phased · from $6,699 package
Score: 63/100
From $6,699 · packageCouleur · Puissance · PW inclusTDI optionPhased 2.0–4.0 MHz · 38 cmIP68 · no subscription
Verdict: Buy the i3P if your Doppler work is cardiac, you want TDI available from the maker, and you want a cordless probe with no subscription.
- Modes Doppler : Color, Power, PW (plus B and M); TDI and Auto EF are Mindray options
- Probe formats: wireless phased array, 64 elements, 2.0–4.0 MHz, scan depth 38 cm; Cardiac, TCI, EM, FAST, AAA, Lung, OB/GYN and Vascular presets
- Price and plan: TE Air i3P package starting at $6,699 (Mindray North America, checked October 15, 2026); “No subscription required – full access to app and features without ongoing fees.”
- Scan time: more than 60 min per charge; IP68; the Air Capsule charging case is a $750 store accessory that recharges the probe up to three times
Why it ranks here. The i3P scores 24 for breadth, the second-highest of the eight ranked models after the Kosmos, because its mode list adds TDI to Color, Power and PW. Color, Power and PW come with the package; Mindray lists TDI as an optional feature, which sets unlock cost at 15. TDI earns it extra tool credit, and the cordless link earns portability points the cabled cardiac probes in this comparison do not. [12][13][14]
The IP68 rating suits emergency and critical-care scanning, and the wireless transducer carries a 3-year warranty, with 1 year on accessories. [12]
Limitations. The i3P is a single phased format, so superficial vessels and needle work need another probe. CW is not in Mindray’s mode list for this model.
Idéal pour : cardiac and emergency clinicians who want a cordless phased probe with TDI available as an option.Skip it if: you need a linear head or CW.

Which Doppler mode each exam needs
Most handheld Doppler exams need Color plus PW; cardiac valve work adds CW, and low-flow perfusion favors Power.
| Exam | Modes the exam uses | Models in this comparison that list them |
|---|---|---|
| DVT compression | B-mode compression as the core test; Color to confirm flow and filling | All eight |
| Carotid and peripheral arterial | Color to find the vessel and flow disturbance; PW for velocities and waveform shape | All eight list Color and PW (PW needs Advanced on the Butterfly iQ3 and Essentials on Clarius) |
| Renal, transplant and testicular perfusion | Color and Power for perfusion; PW for resistive index | Power: Suresult D3Ultra, PD2 and D2T; EchoNous Kosmos (Color Power); Exo Iris; Mindray TE Air i3P; Butterfly iQ3 (Advanced); Clarius |
| Umbilical artery (obstetric) | PW with S/D, PI and RI | Suresult D3Ultra and D2T (PW indices plus obstetric measurements); Butterfly Umbilical Artery Doppler tool (Advanced) |
| Cardiac valves and jets | Color for regurgitant jets; PW for LVOT VTI and mitral inflow; CW for high-velocity jets; TDI for tissue velocities | CW: EchoNous Kosmos and Suresult PD2. TDI: Kosmos, and Mindray TE Air i3P as an option |
Color versus Power. Color Doppler maps the mean velocity and direction of flow inside a box laid over the B-mode image, so it shows where flow is and which way it moves. Power Doppler maps the strength of the Doppler signal instead. It picks up slow and low-volume flow that Color misses, and it gives up direction to do it. For organ perfusion, Power is the mode to have; for vessel identification and flow direction, Color is the workhorse.
PW versus CW. PW places a sample gate at one exact depth and draws a spectral waveform there, giving peak systolic and end-diastolic velocities and the RI, PI and S/D indices. Very fast flow beyond the system’s sampling limit aliases and wraps around the baseline. CW transmits and receives continuously along the whole beam line, so it records high velocities without aliasing; the tradeoff is that it cannot tell at which depth along the line the signal arose. That is why CW is the standard tool for valve stenosis and tricuspid regurgitation jets.
TDI. Tissue Doppler measures the motion of the heart muscle rather than blood. It belongs to diastolic assessment in focused echo, and two ranked models list it: the Kosmos, and the TE Air i3P as a Mindray option.
For DVT and carotid buyers, the vascular ultrasound guide compares linear depth and diagnostic workflow in detail. For transvaginal Color and umbilical artery work, see the OB/GYN ultrasound guide.

Five makers in this comparison sell every listed Doppler mode with the device: Suresult, EchoNous, Exo, GE and Philips. GE sells its AI tools as an optional plan. Mindray includes Color, Power and PW and sells TDI as an option. Two makers separate PW from the hardware. On the Butterfly iQ3, Core at $299 a year covers Color only; Power, PW, VTI and Cardiac Output need Advanced, and the one-time $1,500 license guarantees software access for 5 years. On Clarius, the store pairs every scanner with an Essentials option, and PW is part of Essentials. [4][5][9]
The Suresult line follows one rule across models: the price on the product page is the price of every mode and every measurement, with No Hidden Fees. Shipping, customs clearance, duties and applicable taxes are already inside the checkout price; Suresult processes each order within 24 hours on business days, and every Suresult order comes with the 30-day worry-free trial. Who should skip a handheld Doppler scanner
A handheld Doppler scanner is the wrong purchase when your question is answered by sound alone or belongs to a different job.
- You need to hear flow. A pencil vascular Doppler answers “is there flow?” with sound and needs no imaging probe.
- You listen to fetal heart tones. A fetal Doppler does that job; an imaging scanner with PW is for clinicians who measure the umbilical artery waveform.
- Your work is needle guidance and line placement. Doppler helps you find vessels, but the buying decision turns on needle visibility and access workflow; the vascular access guide ranks scanners for that job.
- Your scanning is B-mode work. For bladder volume, lung or gallbladder checks, Doppler is not the deciding feature; buy on image, workflow and price, and keep the Doppler budget.
Ma méthode de notation
I scored each maker’s highest-scoring model against one buyer question: which handheld gives me the Doppler modes my exams need, and what must I pay to switch every mode on? I declared the weights and rules before scoring and applied them to every device the same way.
Weights: Doppler mode breadth 30 · cost to unlock every listed Doppler mode 25 · probe-format coverage 20 · Doppler measurement tools 15 · portability 10.
- Breadth (30): Color 6, Power 6, PW 8, CW 6, TDI 4 — credited when the maker’s current mode list names the mode for the scored model, whether included or sold as an upgrade.
- Unlock cost (25): 25 = every listed Doppler mode works with the device purchase and no plan; 15 = at least one Doppler mode needs a paid plan and a one-time option exists; 8 = annual plan only.
- Formats (20): linear + convex/curved + phased reachable on the scored device = 20; two formats = 13; one format = 7.
- Tools (15): PW with spectral measurements = 8; an automatic Doppler tool (Auto PW, Auto Color, Auto Doppler) +4; TDI, VTI or cardiac output +3.
- Portability (10): cordless probe 6; weight ≤200 g +4, 201–280 g +2, over 280 g or no listed weight +0.
One ranked card per maker: the card carries that maker’s top-scoring Doppler model, and its other models appear inside the same card, each priced.

| 8 · Philips Lumify L12-4 | 14 | 25 | 7 | 8 | 4 | 58 |
Siblings sit inside their maker’s card: Suresult PD2 (76) and D2T (72); GE Vscan Air CL (68); Clarius PA HD3 (56) and L7 HD3 (56); Philips Lumify S4-1. GE’s SL and CL tie at 68; the SL represents GE because its sector head adds cardiac Doppler. The L12-4 represents Philips, and the S4-1 sector transducer sits inside the Philips card.
I read competitor prices, plans and mode lists on the manufacturers’ US pages on October 9 and 13, 2026, rechecked them on October 15, 2026, and read the Suresult product pages on the same dates. These scores rank Doppler capability and the cost to unlock it; for image accuracy across handhelds, see the handheld ultrasound accuracy ranking.
Portable Doppler ultrasound questions
Does a handheld ultrasound have Doppler?
Yes. Every handheld scanner in this comparison lists Color and PW Doppler: the Suresult D3Ultra, EchoNous Kosmos, Exo Iris, Mindray TE Air i3P, GE Vscan Air SL, Butterfly iQ3, Clarius PAL HD3 and Philips Lumify. The differences are Power Doppler, CW, tissue Doppler, and whether PW needs a paid plan. On the Butterfly iQ3, PW sits in the Advanced membership; on Clarius scanners, PW sits in Essentials.
What is the difference between color Doppler and power Doppler?
Color Doppler maps the mean velocity and direction of blood flow inside a box over the B-mode image. Power Doppler maps the strength of the Doppler signal, which makes it more sensitive to slow and low-volume flow, and it shows no direction. Clinicians use Color to identify vessels and flow direction, and Power for organ perfusion where flow is slow.
Which handheld ultrasound has CW Doppler?
In this comparison, two handhelds list CW Doppler: the EchoNous Kosmos with its Torso-One phased probe, and the Suresult PD2, a wireless 120 g phased probe at 2.2/2.8/3.6 MHz. The Kosmos also lists TDI and Auto Doppler. CW records high-velocity cardiac jets, such as valve stenosis and tricuspid regurgitation, without aliasing.
Do I need a subscription for PW Doppler on Butterfly or Clarius?
Yes for both. The Butterfly iQ3 ($3,899) requires a membership; Power and PW are in Advanced at $420 a year or $1,500 one-time, which Butterfly states covers 5 years of software access. Clarius puts PW in Essentials at $695 a year, $1,785 every 3 years or $2,500 one-time. Suresult, Exo, Mindray, GE and Philips include PW with the device.
Can a handheld ultrasound do DVT scans?
Yes. A DVT exam is B-mode compression with a linear head, with Color to confirm flow and filling, and all eight scanners here list Color. Linear depth varies: the Suresult D3Ultra reaches 100 mm, the GE Vscan Air 8 cm, the Philips Lumify L12-4 12 cm, the Clarius L7 HD3 15 cm, and the Butterfly iQ3 Deep Vein preset 8 cm.
How much does a portable Doppler ultrasound cost?
In this comparison, the Suresult D3Ultra costs $3,200 with Color, Power and PW included. Rival prices checked October 15, 2026: Clarius PA HD3 and L7 HD3 $3,795 before Essentials, Butterfly iQ3 $3,899 plus membership, GE Vscan Air $4,999, Exo Iris $5,499, Mindray TE Air i3P from $6,699, EchoNous Kosmos Mobile from $7.7K, and Philips Lumify S4-1 $12,027.79 at US distributor list.
Is a pencil Doppler the same as a Doppler ultrasound?
No. A pencil (pocket) vascular Doppler plays blood flow as sound, with a simple trace on some models, and produces no image. A Doppler ultrasound scanner shows a B-mode image with a color flow map and measures velocity at a chosen point with PW. Choose a pencil Doppler to hear flow; choose an imaging scanner to see and measure it.
Which portable Doppler ultrasound is best for cardiac work?
The EchoNous Kosmos is the strongest cardiac Doppler package in this comparison, with Color, Color Power, PW, CW and TDI plus Auto Doppler, Auto VTI and Auto EF. For CW on a cordless probe, the Suresult PD2 lists CW, PW, Color and Power at 120 g. The portable echo price guide compares cardiac costs in depth.
