A handheld ultrasound for plastic surgery is a high-frequency linear scanner that images vessels, tissue planes and implant shells through the skin. A surgeon uses it before committing to an incision.

  • Suresult publishes linear models at 18/24 MHz, 16/20 MHz and 10/14 MHz, so the band can match the depth of the plane in question.
  • Color and pulsed-wave Doppler ship on every Suresult scanner listed here, which is what perforator and facial vessel mapping needs.
  • Depth settings on the L14Pro reach 80 mm, enough for an abdominal or thigh donor site rather than face-only work.
  • In-plane and out-of-plane needle guides are included on every Suresult model listed here, which covers aspiration and fascial-plane injection.
  • Every model records cine loops of up to 1,000 frames and exports DICOM for the operative record.

  1. Choose the frequency band the plane sits in.Choose the frequency band the plane sits in.

The L24Pro holds 18/24 MHz for lip, nasal and dermal planes inside the first 25 mm. The L20Pro keeps 16/20 MHz and reaches 40 mm, while the L14Pro runs 10/14 MHz to 80 mm for a donor site.

10 MHz to 24 MHz across four models

  3. Map flow with color, then confirm it with pulsed-wave Doppler.Map flow with color, then confirm it with pulsed-wave Doppler.

A steered color box finds a vessel that runs parallel to the skin. Pulsed-wave Doppler puts a velocity and a resistive index on what the color found.

  4. Measure, save and export before the first incision.Measure, save and export before the first incision.

Calipers put a millimeter figure on a layer or a collection, and the app stores it on the frame. Files export as DICOM, JPEG, PNG or MP4 for the operative record.

What the research says

The evidence, three studies checked

  • Color Doppler mapping landed closer to the dissected perforator than CT angiography with ultrasound did.

In a randomized trial of 60 patients undergoing DIEP flap breast reconstruction, color Doppler ultrasound mapping deviated from the dissected perforator position by 0.6 cm on average. Mapping based on CT angiography with ultrasound deviated by 1.0 cm.

Bajus et al., J Plast Reconstr Aesthet Surg 2023
  • An imaging probe outperformed a pencil Doppler for free flap perforators.

Across 53 patients having free flap reconstruction, color Doppler ultrasound reached a positive predictive value of 100% and a negative predictive value of 100%. Hand-held Doppler reached 88.6% and 90.5% in the same patients.

González Martínez et al., Plast Reconstr Surg 2020
  • Surgeon-performed ultrasound read implant shell integrity correctly in every breast imaged.

In 15 consecutive patients, high-resolution ultrasound performed by a surgeon predicted breast implant shell integrity correctly in 29 of 29 imaged breasts. Surgery confirmed the result in symptomatic and asymptomatic patients.

  • Color, power and pulsed-wave Doppler are included on every Suresult scanner listed here, with no feature tier to unlock.
  • In-plane and out-of-plane needle guides come with every model listed here, and needle enhancement with the L24Pro, L20Pro, L14Pro, L24, L20, L10SH and D3Ultra.
  • Cine loops of up to 1,000 frames and DICOM export put a full scan pass into the operative record.
  • The checkout price is the landed price, with shipping, customs clearance and applicable taxes covered by Suresult's published shipping policy.
  • Certificates are published for inspection: FDA 510(k), EU MDR (CE), Health Canada and ISO 13485.
  • One Suresult app runs on iOS, Android and Windows over dual-band Wi-Fi, so the same scanner works in the operating room and in the consulting room.

What is a handheld ultrasound for plastic surgery?

A handheld ultrasound for plastic surgery is a wireless high-frequency scanner that images vessels, fat and fascial planes, implant shells and postoperative fluid. A plastic surgeon uses it in the clinic room and beside the operating table.

Which Suresult model suits a plastic surgery practice best?

The Suresult L20Pro is the widest daily fit at 16/20 MHz with depth settings of 10, 20, 30 and 40 mm. Its 256-element linear head holds facial planes and still reaches an implant capsule or a superficial fluid pocket.

Can a handheld probe map perforators for a flap?

Yes. A randomized trial of 60 DIEP flap patients found color Doppler mapping deviated 0.6 cm from the dissected perforator, against 1.0 cm for CT angiography with ultrasound. The Suresult L14Pro carries color and pulsed-wave Doppler with depth settings to 80 mm.

Is an imaging probe better than a pencil Doppler for perforators?

In 53 free flap patients, color Doppler ultrasound reached a positive predictive value of 100% and hand-held Doppler reached 88.6%. An imaging probe shows the vessel and its course rather than returning an audible signal.

Can a handheld scanner check a breast implant?

High-resolution ultrasound performed by a surgeon predicted implant shell integrity correctly in 29 of 29 breasts in a 2012 study of 15 patients. That 2012 study used portable high-resolution systems with transducer heads in the 8 to 16 MHz range. It reported that a 12 MHz head produced the best images at the normal clinical depth range.

What frequency does plastic surgery imaging need?

Facial and dermal planes sit in the first 25 mm, which is where 18 to 24 MHz resolves best. A donor site or an implant capsule sits deeper. The Suresult L14Pro at 10/14 MHz and the L10SH at 7.5/10 MHz cover that depth.

Can the same scanner find a seroma or hematoma after surgery?

A seroma or hematoma is read by its border and its contents. The atlas on this page shows a superficial collection captured at 18 MHz on an L24Pro. Needle guides for guided aspiration are included on every Suresult model listed here.

Does the probe show the needle during aspiration or a fascial-plane block?

Yes. Every Suresult model listed here includes in-plane and out-of-plane needle guides, and needle enhancement ships on the L24Pro, L20Pro, L14Pro, L24, L20, L10SH and D3Ultra. The chest wall and abdominal wall captures in this atlas show the guide overlay running through the target plane.

How much does a handheld ultrasound for plastic surgery cost?

A Suresult linear model costs $2,139 for the L14 and $4,185 for the L24Pro, software included. Clarius lists the L20 HD3 at $5,395 and Butterfly lists the iQ3 at $3,899.

What is the five-year cost against Clarius?

Clarius lists the L20 HD3 at $5,395 and prices Essentials at 695 USD per year, 1,785 USD every three years, or 2,500 USD one time. Suresult scanners carry no subscription.

Do I lose Doppler or DICOM if I skip a subscription?

Suresult scanners include all of them. Color, power and pulsed-wave Doppler, needle guides, measurements and DICOM export ship with every scanner. Clarius lists DICOM functionality, Pulsed Wave Doppler and Needle Enhance inside its Essentials membership.

Can one scanner cover both a facial practice and body work?

The Suresult L20Pro at 16/20 MHz reaches 40 mm, which covers facial planes plus fat, fascia and superficial vessels. A practice that also scans donor sites or places blocks adds the L14Pro or the D3Ultra.

Is a handheld enough, or does a plastic surgery clinic need a cart system?

A handheld linear probe covers vessel mapping, plane assessment, implant checks and guided aspiration. A cart system remains the choice for whole-body imaging or for a dedicated imaging department.

Can the scans go into the patient record?

Yes. Every Suresult model saves cine loops of up to 1,000 frames and exports as DICOM, JPEG, PNG or MP4. Measurements are stored on the frame, so a preoperative scan can be compared with a follow-up.

Which platforms and connections do these scanners use?

Suresult scanners run on iOS, Android and Windows over a built-in dual-band Wi-Fi link at 802.11n across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. The software is included and carries no subscription.

How long does one charge last during a clinic list?

The L20Pro, L24Pro and L14Pro carry a 4,400 mAh battery rated for 4 hours of continuous scanning. All three accept USB charging and wireless charging.
