A urology ultrasound machine images the kidney, bladder and prostate, so a clinician can check obstruction, post-void residual and prostate size at the bedside.

  • A convex head at 3.2/5.0 MHz reaches 300 mm, which covers a deep kidney in a large adult.
  • Color Doppler, power Doppler, pulsed-wave Doppler and M-mode run on the C5SH, C5SH-Pro, D3Ultra and LC1.
  • The LC1 carries a bi-plane rectal head at 6.5/8 MHz, so prostate imaging does not need a second brand.
  • The B4D reports bladder volume and post-void residual across a 50-2,000 ml range.

Technique basics

How the exam comes together, probe to report

  1. Start with the convex head.Start with the convex head.

The kidney, bladder and prostate all sit deep, so a 3.2/5.0 MHz convex probe is the first choice rather than a linear one.

    Convex 3.2/5.0 MHz
  2. Set 160 mm, then go deeper if the kidney runs off screen.Set 160 mm, then go deeper if the kidney runs off screen.

Most renal views sit inside 160 mm. The C5SH and D3Ultra convex heads are specified to 300 mm, which is what a large abdomen needs.

Header reads D: 300 mm on this capture
  3. Take each kidney in two planes.Take each kidney in two planes.

A long-axis sweep then a transverse sweep confirms whether a dark central area is a dilated pelvis or an oblique cut through normal sinus fat.

    Two planes per kidney
  4. Fill the bladder before the prostate view.Fill the bladder before the prostate view.

A filled bladder gives the acoustic window for transverse and sagittal prostate calipers. The LC1 bi-plane rectal head takes over when rectal access is the question.

What the research says

The evidence, three studies checked

  • An ultrasound-first pathway for stone pain cut radiation without missing high-risk diagnoses.

Among 2,759 emergency patients with suspected nephrolithiasis, high-risk diagnoses with complications occurred in 0.4% and did not vary by imaging method. Six-month cumulative radiation exposure was significantly lower in the ultrasonography groups than in the CT group.

    Smith-Bindman et al., N Engl J Med 2014
  • Bedside hydronephrosis reads moderately well in mixed hands.

In 413 emergency patients with suspected renal colic, point-of-care ultrasound for hydronephrosis showed 77.1% sensitivity and 71.8% specificity. Hydronephrosis on that scan carried a relative risk of complications of 3.13.

Sibley et al., Ultrasound J 2020
  • A resident on a pocket-sized device agreed with the radiologist on renal findings.

Across 184 hospitalized patients, a medical resident using a pocket-sized ultrasound device agreed well with the radiologist on renal findings (kappa above 0.6). The agreement covered kidney longitudinal diameter, renal cysts and hydronephrosis, and specificity exceeded 90% for every parameter except normal renal size.

What is the best handheld ultrasound machine for urology?

For daily kidney and bladder work the Suresult C5SH is the strongest fit. The C5SH carries a 192-element convex head specified to 300 mm with color Doppler. The LC1 adds a bi-plane rectal head for prostate imaging through rectal access. The D3Ultra adds linear and phased formats for a clinic that also scans vessels and lungs.

Which ultrasound probe is used in urology?

Urology uses a convex probe at 3.2/5.0 MHz for the kidney and bladder. The scrotum needs a linear probe at 7.5/10 MHz, and the prostate needs an endocavity or rectal probe at 6.5/8 MHz.

Can a handheld ultrasound see hydronephrosis?

Yes. This page shows a dilated right collecting system captured live on a D3Ultra. In 413 emergency patients, bedside ultrasound for hydronephrosis showed 77.1% sensitivity and 71.8% specificity.

How is prostate size measured on a handheld scanner?

The prostate is measured through a filled bladder in transverse and sagittal planes using on-screen calipers. The D3Ultra capture on this page reads 33.37 mm and 43.62 mm.

Does a handheld ultrasound measure post-void residual?

Yes. A convex model measures bladder dimensions with on-screen calipers, and the Suresult B4D reports bladder volume and post-void residual across a 50-2,000 ml range.

How much does a urology ultrasound machine cost?

A Suresult urology handheld costs between $1,581 and $4,185, with software included. Clarius publishes the EC7 HD3 endocavity scanner at $5,395 and Butterfly publishes the iQ3 at $3,899.

Is there a transrectal handheld ultrasound?

Yes. The Suresult LC1 is a bi-plane rectal scanner at 6.5/8 MHz with 40-100 mm depth, 192 elements and 32 channels, connected by cable or Wi-Fi.

Can a handheld scanner guide a prostate biopsy?

Yes, the Suresult LC1 supports needle guidance for prostate work. The LC1 carries in-plane and out-of-plane puncture guides on screen, and a needle guide for endocavity probes is listed as a separate accessory. Biopsy practice stays the clinician's decision.

Does it do color Doppler for testicular flow?

Yes. Color Doppler, power Doppler and pulsed-wave Doppler run on the C5SH, C5SH-Pro, D3Ultra, LC1 and the L10H linear probe. The scrotum is scanned with the linear head at 7.5/10 MHz.

What is the real five-year cost of a urology handheld?

Add the device price to five years of any membership fee. Clarius's $695 a year reaches $3,475 by year five, and Butterfly's Core plan adds $1,495. Suresult urology models carry no subscription.

Should a urologist replace the cart machine with a handheld?

No, a handheld does not retire the cart machine outright. A handheld answers focused questions: obstruction, residual volume, prostate size and stone screening. Contrast-enhanced studies, elastography and full urodynamic workups stay on cart equipment.

Is ultrasound enough for suspected kidney stones?

Smith-Bindman and colleagues randomized 2,759 emergency patients in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2014. An ultrasound-first pathway lowered six-month radiation exposure, and high-risk diagnoses with complications stayed at 0.4% across imaging methods. CT remains available when the question stays open.

Does a Suresult urology scanner export into the record?

Yes. Every Suresult urology imaging probe exports JPEG, PNG, MP4 and DICOM, and stores cine loops of 100 to 1,000 frames on the connected device. The B4D bladder scanner keeps cases on the connected tablet.

Which platforms run the software?

iOS, Android and Windows all run Suresult software over a dual-band 2.4G and 5G Wi-Fi link. The B4D bladder scanner runs on Apple iOS.
