Neonatal ultrasound probes, chosen by what a newborn unit actually scans
Two unedited infant captures show what a handheld reads on a small patient, from a Graf-method hip plane to an infant tendon set beside an adult’s. Published pricing, software included, no subscription.

A neonatal ultrasound probe is a small-faced handheld scanner running 5 to 14 MHz, used to image a newborn's lung and hip at the incubator.
- The D2LM carries a 10/12 MHz linear head and a 5/7 MHz micro-convex head with an R20, 88 degree face in one 237 g body.
- The E11 weighs 103 g, images from 30 to 80 mm on an R13 micro-convex head, and scans for three hours on one charge.
- Color Doppler, pulsed-wave Doppler, M-mode and power Doppler ship on every scanner on this page, with no membership to unlock them.
- Stills and cine loops export from the app as DICOM, JPEG, PNG or MP4, so a cot-side study reaches the chart without a cart.

Match the head to the patient, not to the room.
A newborn chest wall, hip, abdomen or vessel sits within about 8 cm of the skin. A high-frequency linear head and a small micro-convex head cover most of that work. The D2LM carries both faces in one body.
Linear 10/12 MHz, micro-convex 5/7 MHzUse the micro-convex face where a flat head will not sit.
The E11 presents an R13 micro-convex face on a 103 g body and images from 30 to 80 mm. That geometry gets between small ribs and under a costal margin.
R13 face, 103 g, 3-hour batteryKeep depth shallow and let the linear head carry the detail.
The L14 runs 10/14 MHz across a 25 mm face with 192 elements and images from 20 to 80 mm. On-screen puncture guides put a target position and radius over the live image.

Every scanner on this page writes stills and cine loops to the tablet and exports DICOM, JPEG, PNG or MP4. Storage is local and no membership gates it.

What the research says
The evidence, three studies checked
- A lung ultrasound score predicted which preterm babies needed surfactant.
In 130 neonates on continuous positive airway pressure, the lung ultrasonography score predicted surfactant need with an area under the curve of 0.93 below 34 weeks' gestation.
Brat et al., JAMA Pediatr 2015 - Lung ultrasound found every pneumothorax in decompensating newborns.
Among 42 infants who suddenly decompensated, lung ultrasound diagnosed pneumothorax with 100% sensitivity and 100% specificity, against 84% and 56% for clinical evaluation.
Raimondi et al., J Pediatr 2016 - Ultrasound guidance cut umbilical catheter tip malposition in a randomized trial.
In 53 randomized neonates, tip malposition occurred in 42.3% of ultrasound-guided umbilical venous catheters against 74% with the standard insertion method.

What is the best portable ultrasound for a NICU?
The Suresult D2LM is the only Suresult handheld carrying both a 5/7 MHz micro-convex head and a 10/12 MHz linear head in one body. Units that need the smallest face choose the E11 instead.
Which probe format do you need for neonatal ultrasound?
A newborn exam needs two formats. A 10 to 14 MHz linear head reads the chest wall, hip and vessels. A micro-convex head running 5 to 11 MHz reaches windows a flat head cannot sit on.
What is a micro-convex probe, and why does it matter for newborns?
A micro-convex probe has a small curved face, quoted as a radius. The Suresult E11 uses R13 and the D2LM uses R20, which is what lets either sit between small ribs.
Can a handheld ultrasound image a newborn's lung?
Yes. The pleural line and the vertical artifacts below it are superficial findings, well inside the 20 to 80 mm range of the Suresult L14 linear head.
Does lung ultrasound predict the need for surfactant?
A 2015 study of 130 neonates on CPAP found a lung ultrasonography score predicted surfactant need with an area under the curve of 0.93 below 34 weeks' gestation.
Can a handheld find a pneumothorax in a decompensating newborn?
In a 2016 study of 42 suddenly decompensating infants, lung ultrasound identified pneumothorax with 100% sensitivity and 100% specificity, against 84% and 56% for clinical evaluation.
Does ultrasound help place an umbilical venous catheter?
A 2022 randomized trial of 53 neonates found tip malposition in 42.3% of ultrasound-guided umbilical venous catheters, against 74% with the standard insertion method.
What frequency should a neonatal probe run at?
Superficial newborn work sits at 10 MHz and above, which is why the L14 runs 10/14 MHz and the D2LM linear head runs 10/12 MHz. Deeper windows drop to 5 to 8 MHz.
How much does a neonatal ultrasound probe cost?
The Suresult E11 is $1,767 and the D2LM is $2,418, software included. Clarius publishes $3,795 for the L15 HD3 and Butterfly publishes $3,899 for the iQ3.
Is there a subscription on a Suresult scanner?
No. Color Doppler, M-mode, measurements, puncture guides and DICOM export are included with the scanner. Clarius publishes $695 a year for Essentials and Butterfly publishes $299 a year for Core.
Does the app export DICOM?
Yes. Every scanner on this page saves stills and cine loops to the tablet. The app exports DICOM, JPEG, PNG or MP4 to local storage, with no membership required.
Can the same probe scan an infant hip?
Yes. The atlas on this page shows a Graf-method coronal hip plane captured on a Suresult D3 handheld at 60 mm depth with a 10 MHz harmonic linear head.
Can a handheld replace the cart scanner in a newborn unit?
No. A handheld covers focused questions: lung pattern, hip screening, line position and gross cardiac assessment. Detailed cranial studies and full quantitative echocardiography stay on a cart system.
Which Suresult model suits a neonatal unit, a mixed pediatric clinic or a general ward?
A neonatal unit buying one scanner takes the D2LM. The smallest windows take the E11. A unit that scans adults as well takes the D3Ultra or the D3L.
