Eye ultrasound machines for ocular point-of-care imaging
Two unedited ocular captures at 14 MHz, and the linear and micro-convex models that reach past the globe to the retrobulbar segment. Color Doppler, calipers and DICOM export are included on every scanner, with no subscription.
Risposta rapida
An eye ultrasound machine is a B-mode scanner that images the globe and the orbit through a closed eyelid, without dilating the pupil.
- Published ocular technique places a sonda lineare ad alta frequenza on the closed lid over a thick layer of gel.
- The Suresult E11 lists Ophthalmic / Eye as a scanning application and carries an 8/11 MHz micro-convex head with an R13 footprint.
- The Suresult L14Pro scans at 10/14 MHz and reaches 80 mm, past the globe and into the retrobulbar segment.
- Optic nerve sheath diameter is measured 3 mm behind the globe, so the depth setting has to clear the posterior wall.

Technique basics
How the exam comes together, probe to report
Rest a high-frequency linear head on the closed lid.
Published technique uses a high-frequency linear probe on the closed eyelid over a thick layer of gel, so the probe never touches the cornea. The hand rests on the nose or forehead so no pressure reaches the globe.
L14Pro, 25 mm footprint, 145 gSet the depth to clear the posterior wall.
A depth of 40 mm to 55 mm puts the whole globe and the front of the retrobulbar segment in the field. The library captures on this page were taken at 55 mm with the dynamic range at 80 dB.
L14Pro depth steps: 20 / 40 / 60 / 80 mmSweep the globe, then scan it kinetically.
Sweep transverse and then sagittal across the whole globe. Then hold the probe still and ask the patient to look up and down, and side to side. A mobile membrane separates itself from a fixed one during that movement.
10-second clip, 100 to 1000 frame cine loopMeasure the optic nerve sheath 3 mm behind the globe.
Bring the optic nerve into view where it leaves the globe, then place the calipers 3 mm posterior to the posterior wall. Averaging several measurements from each eye reduces the spread.

A meta-analysis of 9 studies covering 1,189 eyes found ocular point-of-care ultrasound 94% sensitive and 94% specific for retinal detachment.
Propst et al., JAMA Netw Open 2020 - A four-center emergency department study identified retinal detachment on ocular ultrasound.
Across 225 patients at four emergency departments, point-of-care ultrasonography was 96.9% sensitive and 88.1% specific for retinal detachment.
Lahham et al., JAMA Netw Open 2019 - A 7 to 15 MHz linear transducer matched CT on lens dislocation.
Across 351 eyes, ultrasound with a 7 to 15 MHz linear transducer was 96.8% sensitive and 99.4% specific for lens dislocation against CT.

Cosa controllare prima dell'acquisto
What is the best eye ultrasound machine for a clinic?
For ocular imaging the Suresult L14Pro is the strongest fit: a 256-element linear head at 10/14 MHz with depth steps to 80 mm. The E11 is the alternative when the smaller micro-convex footprint matters.
Which probe do you use for an eye ultrasound?
Published ocular technique uses a high-frequency linear probe on the closed eyelid. StatPearls describes 7 to 10 MHz or higher as sufficient, and Ojaghihaghighi and colleagues, Ann Emerg Med 2019, used a 7 to 15 MHz linear transducer.
How much does an eye ultrasound machine cost?
The Suresult E11 costs $1,767 and the L14Pro costs $3,441, software included. Clarius lists the L15 HD3 at $3,795 and Butterfly lists the iQ3 at $3,899.
What does a B-scan ultrasound cost?
Refurbished dedicated ophthalmic B-scan systems are listed between $5,950 and $18,500 by specialist resellers. The Suresult E11 is $1,767 and the L14Pro is $3,441.
Is a handheld probe the same thing as a dedicated ophthalmic B-scan?
No. A dedicated ophthalmic B-scan unit is a separate device class that pairs a 10 to 20 MHz eye probe with A-scan biometry. The scanners on this page perform ocular point-of-care B-mode imaging.
Can ultrasound detect a retinal detachment at the bedside?
Yes. A 2020 meta-analysis of 9 studies and 1,189 eyes reported 94% sensitivity and 94% specificity for retinal detachment on ocular point-of-care ultrasound.
Can a handheld probe measure optic nerve sheath diameter?
Yes. The optic nerve sheath is measured 3 mm behind the globe with B-mode calipers, which every Suresult scanner carries. A 2011 meta-analysis reported 90% sensitivity for raised intracranial pressure.
What depth setting does an eye scan need?
A setting between 40 mm and 55 mm holds the whole globe plus the front of the retrobulbar segment. A 55 mm depth setting on a 14 MHz linear head keeps both in one field.
When should ocular ultrasound not be performed?
Ocular ultrasound is contraindicated when globe rupture is suspected, according to StatPearls. Lahham and colleagues, JAMA Netw Open 2019, excluded patients with ocular trauma or suspicion for globe rupture from their four-center study.
How is the probe kept off the eye itself?
The probe rests on the closed lid over a thick layer of gel. The scanning hand braces on the nose, midface or forehead so no pressure reaches the globe.
Does the E11 really list an ophthalmic application?
Yes. Ophthalmic / Eye appears in the published specification of the Suresult E11, which is the only model in the range carrying that application entry.
Do the Suresult scanners charge a software subscription?
No. Color Doppler, M-mode, PW Doppler, B-mode calipers and DICOM export are included in the purchase price on every model listed here.
Which Suresult model suits an emergency department versus an eye clinic?
An emergency department that scans the eye occasionally fits the E11 or the D3Ultra. An eye-focused practice fits the L14Pro, which holds the 10/14 MHz band and 80 mm of depth.
Do the scanners export images into a record?
Yes. Every model listed here saves stills and cine loops of 100 to 1,000 frames, and exports as DICOM, JPEG, PNG or MP4.
