Portable veterinary ultrasound for mixed, farm and small animal practice

This page sets out which Suresult handheld fits a mixed practice, a farm call and a small animal table. Every model page publishes its price, and the D3 carries the three formats at $2,232 with the software included.

Every ultrasound frame on this page is a human capture from this hardware family, because the Suresult capture library holds no animal imaging. ·Trusted by 8,717 clinicians →

Respuesta rápida

A portable veterinary ultrasound is a battery-powered probe that images an animal at the point of care, with the screen on a phone, tablet or laptop.

  • The convex head on the D3Ultra runs at 3.2/5.0 MHz and steps from 90 to 300 mm, which covers deep abdominal work in a large patient.
  • The L14 carries a 10/14 MHz linear head over 20 to 80 mm, the range that tendon and superficial scanning uses.
  • Color Doppler, M-mode, pulsed wave Doppler and the on-screen puncture guides ship on the scanner, and Suresult charges no software subscription.
  • Cine loops hold up to 1,000 frames and export as MP4 or DICOM, so a farm call reaches the record.

Technique basics

How the exam comes together, probe to report

  1. Pick the format before the animal is on the table.Pick the format before the animal is on the table.

Convex at 3.2/5.0 MHz carries the abdominal and reproductive work in a large patient. The linear head at 7.5/10 MHz or 10/14 MHz takes tendon and superficial questions, and the phased head opens the cardiac windows.

  2. Fix the contact before touching the gain.Fix the contact before touching the gain.

Hair traps air, and air stops the beam. Clipping or parting the coat, then wetting the skin with alcohol under the gel, does more for the image than any control on screen.

    Contact first, gain second
  3. Set depth to the organ, then correct gain.Set depth to the organ, then correct gain.

Convex depth on the D3Ultra steps from 90 to 300 mm, and the header prints the value in use. Eight-segment time gain compensation then evens out the far field.

    D: 160 mm on the D3Ultra header
  4. Save the loop, then export it.Save the loop, then export it.

The cine buffer holds 100 to 1,000 frames, so the sweep survives the visit. Files leave the app as JPEG, PNG, MP4 or DICOM.

What the research says

The evidence, three studies checked

  • Transrectal ultrasound read pregnancy in dairy cows on day 28.

In 100 Holstein-Friesian cows scanned 28 days after insemination, transrectal ultrasonography reached 92.7% sensitivity, 91.5% specificity and 92% overall accuracy. The gold standard combined those day-28 scans with two blood assays, falling back to a day-42 scan.

Karen et al., Anim Reprod Sci 2015
  • Thoracic ultrasound matched radiography for pneumonia in dairy calves.

Among 50 hospitalized dairy calves, thoracic ultrasonography showed 0.84 sensitivity and 0.74 specificity for active bronchopneumonia, and no significant difference from thoracic radiography.

Berman et al., J Vet Intern Med 2021
  • Clinicians with minimal ultrasound experience ran the dog FAST scan.

In 100 dogs examined within 24 hours of a motor vehicle accident, a four-site FAST scan detected free abdominal fluid in 45 of them.

What is the best portable ultrasound for a mixed veterinary practice?

The Suresult D3Ultra fits a mixed list best, because one 263 g body carries convex, linear and phased formats. Convex depth steps from 90 to 300 mm on 192 elements and 64 channels.

How deep does a handheld convex probe reach on a large animal?

The convex head on the Suresult D3Ultra reaches 300 mm, and the D3Pro, D3L and D3 step to 305 mm. Reachable depth in the animal still depends on body wall thickness and contact quality.

Which Suresult model has a probe for transrectal work?

The Suresult LC1 carries a bi-plane 6.5/8 MHz head on a 336 mm shaft and images from 40 to 100 mm. A veterinarian should confirm with Suresult that the body suits the species scanned.

Is a handheld accurate enough for a pregnancy check in cattle?

Yes, when the probe reaches the day-28 window. Transrectal ultrasound reached 92.7% sensitivity and 91.5% specificity in 100 dairy cows, reported by Karen and colleagues in Anim Reprod Sci 2015. That paper did not report the equipment used, and operator technique carries most of the result.

Can a handheld ultrasound scan a calf's chest?

Yes. A linear or convex head at 5 to 10 MHz covers the intercostal windows. Berman and colleagues reported 0.84 sensitivity and 0.74 specificity for thoracic ultrasound in 50 hospitalized dairy calves, in J Vet Intern Med 2021. That study found no significant difference between thoracic ultrasound and radiography.

What does a FAST scan look for in a dog?

A FAST scan looks for free abdominal fluid at four sites, taken in two planes each. Boysen and colleagues detected free fluid in 45 of 100 dogs seen within 24 hours of a motor vehicle accident, in J Am Vet Med Assoc 2004.

Does the ultrasound beam pass through animal hair?

No. Hair traps air, and air blocks the beam. Clipping or parting the coat, then wetting the skin with alcohol under the gel, does more for the image than any control on screen.

Does Suresult software cost extra each year?

No. Color Doppler, M-mode, pulsed wave Doppler, on-screen measurements, the on-screen puncture guides and DICOM export ship with the scanner, and there is no subscription. A physical biopsy needle guide is sold separately as an accessory.

Which model on this page has the longest battery?

Of the models on this page, the D3Pro and the D3L hold the longest battery, at 4,200 mAh rated for 3 hours of continuous scanning. The D3Ultra holds 2,800 mAh rated at 2 hours.

Does the scanner work with an iPad or an Android tablet?

Yes. Suresult scanners run on iOS, Android and Windows over a dual-band 2.4G and 5G wifi link, so an existing tablet or laptop can be the screen.

Can images leave the app for a client record?

Yes. Files export as JPEG, PNG, MP4 or DICOM, and the cine buffer holds 100 to 1,000 frames per loop.

How much does a portable veterinary ultrasound cost?

Suresult publishes a price on every model page. The D3 is listed at $2,232 and the D3Ultra at $2,976. Clarius publishes $3,795 for the C7 Vet HD3 plus $695 a year for membership.

Which model suits a small animal clinic doing superficial work?

The L14 carries a 10/14 MHz linear head at 20 to 80 mm on 192 elements. The D2LM pairs a 10/12 MHz linear head with a 5/7 MHz micro-convex head for a smaller footprint.

Are the scan images on this page from animals?

No. Every ultrasound frame on this page is a human capture from the same hardware, because the Suresult capture library holds no animal imaging. Hardware photographs are labeled as product photography.

Does the price at checkout include duties and shipping?

Yes. Suresult covers shipping, duties and taxes in the checkout price, with delivery in 1 to 7 days where the express service reaches.
