Critical care ultrasound machines, proven on real ICU scans

Ten unedited captures show what a handheld reads in critical care: B-lines, pericardial fluid, the caval window and the vessel a line goes into. Published pricing, software included, no subscription.

Every scan on this page was recorded on this Suresult hardware family, by clinicians who bought it and by a clinical trainer who scans with it. Each clip is trimmed to the scan itself. ·Trusted by 8,717 clinicians →

A critical care ultrasound machine is a bedside scanner that reads lung water, pump function, volume status and vessel anatomy without moving the patient.

  • The D3 family carries phased, convex and linear heads in one probe: the heart, the caval window, the pleural line and the neck vessels on one device.
  • Color Doppler, pulsed-wave Doppler and M-mode ship on every scanner on this page, and the L10SH and D3Ultra add Mejora de la aguja to the puncture guides.
  • Stills and cine loops export from the app as DICOM, JPEG, PNG or MP4, so an ICU study reaches the record without a cart.
  • The D3Pro and D3L scan for three hours continuously on a 4,200 mAh battery, which covers a full ward round.

Diffuse B-lines in acute pulmonary edema on the D3Ultra

Diffuse B-lines in acute pulmonary edema on the D3Ultra

Vertical artifacts rise from the pleural line and run to the bottom of the sector, the pattern that separates cardiogenic edema from an obstructive cause of dyspnea. The case note describes an end-stage renal disease patient with orthopnea and hypoxia who improved after urgent dialysis.

Technique basics

How the exam comes together, probe to report

  1. Match the head to the ICU question.Match the head to the ICU question.

Cardiac windows sit between the ribs, so they need the phased sector. The convex head reaches the abdomen and the caval window, and the linear head images the pleural line and the neck vessels.

The convex and phased face on the D3Ultra
  2. Start with the lung in respiratory failure.Start with the lung in respiratory failure.

Set gain and depth on the pleural line first. Anterior zones separate A-lines from diffuse B-lines, and posterior zones find effusion and consolidation.

Pleural line at harmonic 5.0 MHz
  3. Read the heart, then the caval window.Read the heart, then the caval window.

The phased head shows pump function and pericardial fluid at 160 mm to start. The convex head then measures caval diameter and collapse before a fluid bolus is committed.

IVC at 3.2 MHz on the D3Ultra
  4. Place the line on the linear head.Place the line on the linear head.

In-plane and out-of-plane puncture guides draw the needle path over the vessel, and the flip and grid tools keep the orientation honest. Needle Enhance sharpens the shaft on the L10SH and the D3Ultra.

What the research says

The evidence, three studies checked

  • Lung ultrasound outread the bedside chest film in ARDS.

In 32 patients with ARDS, lung ultrasonography was 93% accurate for pleural effusion and 97% for alveolar consolidation, against 47% and 75% for bedside chest radiography.

    Lichtenstein et al., Anesthesiology 2004
  • A bedside protocol changed the admitting diagnosis in one ICU patient in four.

In 125 consecutive ICU admissions scanned under a critical care ultrasonography protocol, findings modified the admitting diagnosis in 25.6% of patients and changed therapy in 17.6%.

    Manno et al., Anesthesiology 2012
  • Ultrasound guidance beat the landmark technique for internal jugular lines in the ICU.

Ultrasound-guided internal jugular cannulation succeeded in all 450 ICU patients, against 94.4% with the landmark technique, which punctured the carotid artery in 10.6%.

What is the best handheld ultrasound machine for critical care?

The Suresult D3Ultra fits most intensive care units, because it carries phased, convex and linear heads in one 192-element probe. The CD2 suits units where echocardiography and central lines are the daily work.

Which point-of-care ultrasound exams are standard in the ICU?

Lung ultrasound, focused echocardiography, inferior vena cava assessment, abdominal free-fluid scanning and ultrasound-guided vascular access are the five exams this page demonstrates. All five run on one handheld probe.

Can a handheld ultrasound replace a cart machine in the ICU?

A handheld answers the focused ICU questions: lung water, pump function, effusion, volume status and line placement. Comprehensive echocardiography, transesophageal imaging and full Doppler quantification stay on a cart system.

Is lung ultrasound more accurate than a bedside chest radiograph in ARDS?

A 2004 Anesthesiology study of 32 patients with ARDS found lung ultrasonography 93% accurate for pleural effusion, against 47% for bedside chest radiography.

How often does a bedside ultrasound change the ICU diagnosis?

In 125 consecutive ICU admissions scanned under a critical care ultrasonography protocol, findings modified the admitting diagnosis in 25.6% of patients and changed medical therapy in 17.6%.

Does ultrasound guidance reduce central line complications?

A randomized study of 900 critical care patients found carotid artery puncture in 10.6% of landmark internal jugular attempts, significantly more than in the ultrasound-guided group.

How much does a critical care ultrasound machine cost?

A Suresult handheld for critical care runs from $2,139 to $3,534 with software included. The Clarius PAL HD3, Butterfly iQ3 and GE Vscan Air SL publish $3,899 to $5,395 before any membership fee.

Which model covers the whole shock assessment?

The D3Ultra and the D3Pro carry phased, convex and linear heads in one probe. That covers the cardiac, caval, abdominal and lung windows of a shock assessment.

What imaging depth do adult ICU cardiac windows need?

Suresult phased heads reach 190 mm on the CD2 and the PD1, 300 mm on the D3Ultra and 305 mm on the D3Pro, D3L and D3. Every one of those ranges covers adult apical and subcostal windows.

Is there a subscription fee on a Suresult scanner?

Suresult scanners carry no subscription. Clarius Essentials is $695 a year, and Butterfly's Advanced plan is $420 a year or $1,500 once for five years.

Can an ICU study go into the patient record?

The seven models on this page save stills and cine loops of 100 to 1,000 frames in the app, and export them as DICOM, JPEG, PNG or MP4.

How long does the battery last on an ICU round?

The D3Pro and the D3L scan for three hours continuously on a 4,200 mAh battery. The D3Ultra runs two hours, and the CD2 and L10SH run 90 minutes.

Does the same probe do lung imaging and line placement?

The linear head images both the pleural line and the neck vessels. On the L10SH that head is a 256-element array with Needle Enhance for cannulation.

How is a handheld probe cleaned between ICU patients?

The probe is wiped after each use with a soft cloth dampened with isopropyl alcohol, for one minute or until it is visibly clean. For wipe disinfection the user manual lists T-spray II, a quaternary ammonium agent, at under 10 minutes of contact time.

Which Suresult model is the cheapest way into ICU echocardiography?

The PD1 is the entry phased-array model, with 128 elements, 2.5/2.8/3.6 MHz and 90 to 190 mm of depth, at $2,139.

Does a handheld work for mechanically ventilated patients?

A 2004 Anesthesiology study of 32 patients with ARDS found lung ultrasonography 97% accurate for alveolar consolidation, against 75% for bedside chest radiography. Lung ultrasonography also quantified the extent of lung injury, which chest radiography could not.
