Suresult D3Ultra, PD2 and CD2 handheld ultrasound probes standing side by side on a white panel

A portable echo machine with PW Doppler costs $2,300 as the Suresult PD1, $4,319 in year one as the Butterfly iQ3 with its membership, and $12,027.79 as the Philips Lumify S4-1 at US distributor list. The spread comes from three things beyond the hardware: which Doppler modes you get, which ones sit behind a yearly membership, and how deep the sector reaches. I compared nine makers and four same-maker alternatives the way a buyer pays for them, from maker stores and price pages plus Penn Care’s public Lumify listing, all read on October 9, 2026.

I review handheld ultrasound devices independently. Deep ultrasound knowledge from clinical scanning and point-of-care teaching sits behind every score on this page: I scored thirteen devices across nine makers — the Suresult PD2, the Suresult D3Ultra, the Suresult CD2, the Suresult PD1, the EchoNous Kosmos, the Clarius PAL HD3, the Clarius PA HD3, the GE Vscan Air SL, the Exo Iris, the Mindray TE Air i3P, the Butterfly iQ3, the Philips Lumify S4-1 and the Vave Phased — on their makers’ published prices, specifications and terms as they stood on October 9, 2026.

A portable echo machine with PW Doppler costs $2,300 for the Suresult PD1, $2,490 for the PD2 with CW, $2,900 for the CD2 and $3,200 for the D3Ultra, all with no subscription; among the other brands it runs from $4,319 in year one (Butterfly iQ3 with its membership) to $12,027.79 (Philips Lumify S4-1, US distributor list), with the EchoNous Kosmos package from $7,700. Color-only echo costs $3,500 (Vave Phased). Rival figures were read on October 9, 2026; Suresult prices are current checkout prices.

Mi elección es el Suresult PD2: a dedicated 192-element phased array with pulsed-wave and continuous-wave Doppler and no membership. CW records the aortic-stenosis jet and the tricuspid regurgitant velocity, and only two handhelds in this comparison have it. For the full echo-lab set — CW, tissue Doppler, Auto EF and Auto VTI in one package — quote the EchoNous Kosmos from $7.7K. Suresult also offers the entry PD1, the CD2 with a linear head and the D3Ultra with three arrays. Among the other brands, the Butterfly iQ3 is the lowest first-year route to PW Doppler: $4,319 with Advanced membership.

Suresult PD2 — my pick$2,490 at checkout, no subscription. Phased array with PW and CW Doppler, 192 elements, 240 mm, 120 g, iOS, Android and Windows. Entry phased array with PW: the Suresult PD1 at $2,300.
EchoNous Kosmos — the full echo labFrom $7.7K as the Kosmos Mobile package, itemized by quote. Color, PW, CW and tissue Doppler with Auto EF and Auto VTI; five-year probe warranty.
Butterfly iQ3 — lowest PW price among other brands$4,319 in year one: $3,899 hardware plus $420 Advanced membership. Single-chip heart, abdomen and vessel imaging with PW, VTI and cardiac-output tools; the lowest first-year PW price among the other brands.

First place goes to the probe that puts continuous-wave Doppler in the box with no membership attached. CW is the mode that records the fast jets: the peak velocity across a narrowed aortic valve and the tricuspid regurgitant velocity behind the bedside estimate of pulmonary pressure. In this comparison exactly two handhelds carry it — the PD2 and the EchoNous Kosmos — and the Kosmos sells as a quoted tablet package.

Under the CW button sits a dedicated 192-element, 64-channel phased array with three frequency steps, 2.2, 2.8 and 3.6 MHz, an 80-degree sector and 240 mm of depth. PW Doppler handles mitral inflow and the outflow tract, M-mode diameters (LVIDd and LVIDs) feed the EF and stroke-volume calculation, and the same app runs on an iPhone, an Android tablet or a Windows laptop over the probe’s own Wi-Fi. At 120 g it rides in a coat pocket. The checkout figure already covers door-to-door delivery with duties paid, and the 30-Day Worry Free Trial gives a month to grade real valves before deciding.

Every measurement runs inside the app with nothing to subscribe to: EF and stroke volume from the M-mode calipers, and from the PW gate the peak systolic and end-diastolic velocities, TAMAX, TAMEAN, PI, RI and S/D. The sector reaches 240 mm; for daily apical work on large chests, the D3Ultra reaches 300 mm and the Kosmos 30 cm.

For a handheld that behaves most like an echo-lab machine, the Kosmos is the one. Torso-One carries every Doppler mode in this comparison — color, PW, CW and tissue Doppler — and the AI does the measuring: Auto EF with stroke volume, Auto VTI at the outflow tract, and an Auto Doppler tool that drops the PW or TDI gate on the LVOT, the valves and the annuli. It scores highest on Doppler and cardiac AI of everything I compared, and it finishes second overall.

The price reflects it. EchoNous publishes package anchors rather than a probe price: Kosmos Mobile starts at $7.7K with an iPad, a carry bag, your choice of probes, advanced Doppler and AI; Kosmos Plus, with the 13-inch iPad and a stand, runs under $21K; the exact configuration arrives as an itemized quote. Advanced Doppler and the AI tools come inside the package, and the Torso-One carries a five-year transducer warranty.

At a package price from $7,700, Kosmos runs through a cable on an iPad or Android tablet. The Lexsa linear for vascular access is a separate probe priced in its own package.

The PAL HD3 is the dual-head route with the deepest cardiac reach: a 1–5 MHz phased array that images to 40 cm, and a 5–15 MHz linear on the other end for vessels, lungs and access. For a clinician who meets large chests and also places lines, no other dual-head device here goes as deep.

Clarius sells the echo software as a membership. PW Doppler, the specialty presets and the EF AI live inside Clarius Essentials, so the $5,395 scanner becomes $6,090 in year one and $7,895 with the one-time Essentials license. Clarius backs it with a three-year warranty and a 30-day return.

It lands third: the required membership counts against it on all three cost criteria, and it carries no CW or tissue Doppler.

GE’s dual probe is a polished cordless package with AI that coaches you into the views: Caption Guidance covers ten standard echo views, and Caption Interpretation calculates AutoEF from the parasternal long-axis or apical two- and four-chamber views. The linear end runs 3–12 MHz for vessels and lungs.

At $4,999 with PW Doppler included, it is the lowest-priced rival route to PW that needs no membership. The AI is where the bill grows: Caption Guidance and AutoEF arrive through the Premier Innovations subscription at $500 a year or $1,299 for three years, which takes an AI-equipped Vscan to $7,298 over five years. The three-year warranty includes remote support and a 45-minute training session.

It lands fourth, 0.01 behind the Clarius PAL HD3, whose sector reaches 40 cm; Caption AI comes as a paid add-on. CW is available on the PD2 and Kosmos, with tissue Doppler on the Kosmos. Battery life is up to 50 minutes of scanning.

If you want the software to hand you the ejection fraction without a recurring bill, the Exo Iris is the least expensive way to get it in this comparison. SweepAI Cardiac returns LVEF, septal and posterior wall thickness and IVC diameter, and it is included in the $5,499 price with no login and no subscription.

The 4,096-element matrix also runs curved and linear modes from 1.5 to 12 MHz, so one head covers abdomen and vessels, and the app adds Auto Color, Auto M-mode and Auto PW tools. Exo Works Connect, the optional software plan, adds $500 a year.

It ranks fifth because it is cabled to the phone, it runs on Apple devices only (iOS and iPadOS 26 or later), and it carries no CW or tissue Doppler.

  • read October 9, 2026

The i3P is the subscription-free route to tissue Doppler. Its 64-element phased array images to 38 cm and adds TDI to the PW and color set, so the annular e′ velocity of a diastolic workup is a probe feature rather than a membership. Mindray builds it like a field instrument: IP68 sealing, an Air Capsule that recharges the probe up to three times, and a three-year warranty on the wireless transducer.

The package starts at $6,699 with full app access and no ongoing fees; options such as the Air Capsule ($750) and an 11-inch iPad ($493) are priced separately on the same store.

It ranks sixth because the US model carries no AI ejection fraction — Mindray offers AutoEF for the i3P in the EU and UK only — and it has no CW, the one Doppler mode the Kosmos adds to its set and the mode the PD2 carries in place of tissue Doppler.

Among the rival brands I priced, the iQ3 is the lowest first-year route to PW Doppler — $4,319 with an annual Advanced membership — and its single chip switches between phased, convex and linear formats, so one probe images the heart, the abdomen and the vessels. Its high-frame-rate cardiac preset adds a Subxiphoid Tilt view aid.

Advanced is also where the cardiac tools live: the VTI and cardiac-output calculations are iQ3-only features of that tier. Over five years the one-time license ($1,500) brings the probe to $5,399; staying on the annual plan costs $5,999.

PW Doppler is available through Advanced at $420 a year or a $1,500 one-time payment for five years of software access. The cardiac preset reaches 25 cm on a single chip rather than a dedicated phased array, the probe is cabled to the phone, and there is no CW or tissue Doppler. • Philips sells by quote (“Contact sales”); public US distributor list $12,027.79 per transducer (Penn Care, Android or iOS SKU)
  • no subscription, all software included
  • phased 4–1 MHz, up to 30 cm, 90° field, 25.5 mm footprint
  • 2D, M-mode, Color, PW
  • FAST Auto Assist, B-line detection
  • under 136 g, battery-free, powered by the host device
  • Android over USB-C, iOS through the Lumify Power Module
  • 3–5-year warranty (Philips)
  • read October 9, 2026

The S4-1 is the hospital-brand choice: a battery-free sector transducer that draws its power from the phone or tablet, with Philips’s cardiac preset, PW and color Doppler, and no software subscription — Philips sells it outright with every feature unlocked, and the transducer weighs under 136 g.

Philips quotes it through sales; the public list from US distributor Penn Care is $12,027.79 per transducer, and Philips describes a three-to-five-year warranty. A complete Lumify kit with linear and curved imaging means buying the L12-4 and C5-2 transducers as separate purchases.

It ranks eighth because the first-year and five-year cost criteria count that full distributor price, and the Doppler set stops at PW: no CW, no tissue Doppler, and no AI ejection fraction on the S4-1.

Vave Phased wireless phased-array probe with blue cap

09 Vave Phased Color-only echo

Weighted score: 4.94 / 10

$3,500
1–5 MHz phased array
Color; lifetime free app
Batería extraíble
  • $3,500 on the Vave shop
  • lifetime free app, no subscription
  • phased 1–5 MHz, 5–24 cm
  • B, M, Color and Deep Mode
  • removable rechargeable battery (extra battery $129)
  • iOS, Android
  • 36-month warranty
  • read October 9, 2026

The Vave Phased is the price reference for color-only echo: $3,500, wireless, no subscription, and a cardiac preset that shows the heart in B-mode, M-mode and color. Its removable battery is a genuine field advantage — a spare costs $129.

For mitral inflow, LVOT velocities, cardiac calculations or AI measurements, choose a probe with PW and the corresponding cardiac tools. It ranks last on my criteria for that reason: the Doppler set shares the heaviest weight of the eight criteria.

Buy it for visual assessment: an effusion, a dilated ventricle and gross function in grayscale and color, with M-mode for dimensions. For flow velocities you plan to measure, pick a probe with PW Doppler.

On the screen

What a Suresult phased array shows on the cardiac windows

Both frames below come from the D3Ultra’s phased array, with frequency and depth on screen; the PD2’s apical four-chamber frame opens this page.

Suresult D3Ultra parasternal long-axis cardiac scan at 4.0 MHz and 130 mm depth, full app interface
Parasternal long-axis frame recorded on the Suresult D3Ultra by creator Brandon Ramakko on January 22, 2026. The app header shows the Cardiac preset at 4.0 MHz and 130 mm depth.
Subcostal inferior vena cava view from the Suresult D3Ultra at 3.2 MHz and 160 mm depth, full app interface
Subcostal inferior vena cava from the D3Ultra at 3.2 MHz and 160 mm depth, the volume-status window of a focused cardiac exam; (Suresult clinical media, October 19, 2025).

The parasternal long-axis window is where the cardiac package works: an M-mode line through the septum, the cavity and the posterior wall returns LVIDd and LVIDs in diastole and systole, and the app calculates ejection fraction and stroke volume from those diameters, with no AI tier to buy.

What the money buys

What PW, CW and tissue Doppler add to a handheld echo

A focused heart scan needs no Doppler at all. The American Society of Echocardiography’s 2013 recommendations on focused cardiac ultrasound build that exam around a short list of questions — pericardial effusion, global left-ventricular function, gross chamber size and volume status — that two-dimensional imaging and M-mode answer. Every device on this page does that much, the $3,500 color-only Vave included.

  1. PW Doppler measures velocity at one chosen depth. It records mitral inflow, with its E and A waves, and the velocity-time integral in the left-ventricular outflow tract that stroke volume is calculated from. It adds sampled flow velocities to the 2D and M-mode dimensions, and it is the first upgrade worth paying for.
  2. Tissue Doppler measures the heart muscle itself. The American Society of Echocardiography’s 2025 diastolic-function update estimates left-atrial pressure from three main readings: the tissue-Doppler e′ velocity at the mitral annulus, the E/e′ ratio of PW mitral E to that e′, and pulmonary pressure from the CW tricuspid regurgitant jet, with left-atrial strain and volume as the next variables. All three main readings need tissue Doppler or CW.
  3. CW Doppler records the fastest velocity anywhere along the beam. It captures the high-velocity jet used in aortic-stenosis grading. The 2017 EACVI/ASE aortic stenosis update grades severity from peak velocity, mean gradient, valve area and flow status, with 4 m/s and 40 mmHg as the high-gradient severe thresholds — speeds that alias on PW. CW also measures the tricuspid jet behind the bedside estimate of pulmonary pressure.

On the price ladder that sorts cleanly. Color-only echo is the Vave Phased at $3,500. PW Doppler arrives with all four Suresult phased heads and, among the rival brands, from $4,319 in year one on the Butterfly iQ3. Tissue Doppler means the Mindray TE Air i3P or the Kosmos. CW means the Suresult PD2 or the Kosmos — and only the Kosmos carries all three.

Context

Laptop and cart echo: a different purchase

Laptop and cart systems — GE Vivid iq and Venue, Philips CX50 and Affiniti, Mindray TE7 and M9, Sonosite PX and LX, Siemens Acuson P500, Esaote MyLab — sell through itemized configuration quotes. They are built for the comprehensive study a cardiology department reports. If that is your work, my cost-of-ultrasound guide prices those tiers; everything on this page is a handheld you can order from a store or a short quote.

Compare carefully before you order

Which echo setup fits your work

Comprehensive echo reports: a cart systemStrain, 3D volumes and a full valve report run on a cart system in an echo lab. A handheld answers the focused question at the bedside and travels in a pocket between those studies.
Effusion, function and the IVC: an entry phased array covers itWhen those three questions are the whole job, an entry phased array answers them: the Suresult PD1 at $2,300 adds PW Doppler, and the Vave Phased covers color-only work at $3,500.
Contract purchasing: GE or Philips salesA department that buys with a service agreement, loaners and a purchasing contract orders through GE or Philips sales; the Vscan Air SL and the Lumify S4-1 both come that way. An individual clinician orders the Suresult, Vave, Butterfly, GE, Exo, Clarius and Mindray probes online; the Kosmos comes through an EchoNous quote and the Lumify S4-1 through Philips sales or Penn Care.
Mostly abdomen and pregnancy: a convex array firstFor that day the first probe is a convex array, and the D3Ultra carries convex, linear and phased arrays in one body when hearts are part of the mix.

The rules behind the ranking

How I scored nine makers and their sibling models

Eight criteria, each scored from 0 to 10 and weighted. The three cost criteria together carry 35%, because all three reward the same thing — a price with no recurring fee — and echo capability carries 60%.

  1. C1 · 15% — First-year echo cost. Hardware plus whatever membership unlocks PW Doppler, on the cheapest first-year route. Score = 10 × the lowest first-year cost on the page ÷ this device’s.
  2. C2 · 10% — Five-year software-inclusive cost. The cheapest published route that keeps that software for five years, scored the same way.
  3. C3 · 20% — Doppler set. Color 2 points, PW 4, CW 2.5, tissue Doppler 1.5, as published for the exact model and tier — ten for the full set.
  4. C4 · 15% — Cardiac measurement and AI. Included AI EF with automated VTI and Doppler 10; included AI EF 8; AI EF through a paid membership, subscription or license 6; VTI and cardiac-output tools 5; a cardiac calculation package (EF and SV from M-mode diameters, PW indices) 4; automated or clinical tools listed, none for cardiac measurement, 3; no measurement or AI tools listed 1.
  5. C5 · 20% — Cardiac array and penetration, from published specifications. A dedicated phased array earns 4, a single chip or matrix in phased format 3. Maximum published cardiac depth adds 1 under 24 cm, 2 from 24 to 29 cm, 3 from 30 to 37 cm and 4 at 38 cm and up. A low-frequency floor adds 2 at 1.5 MHz or below, 1.5 up to 2.2 MHz, 1 up to 2.5 MHz and 0.5 above.
  6. C6 · 5% — Linear imaging in the priced configuration. A linear head reaching 12 MHz or more, or a third array, in the same probe 10; a linear head to 10 MHz in the same probe 9; one chip or matrix that also runs a linear format 7. A configuration with no linear imaging scores zero, with the weight left in place.
  7. C7 · 10% — Ownership terms. No required subscription 4. Standard warranty: five years 4, three to five years 3.5, three years 3, two years or an unpublished term 2. A published 30-day trial or return window 2.
  8. C8 · 5% — Platform. Wireless 5 or cabled 2.5, plus host coverage: iOS, Android and Windows 5; iOS and Android 4; tablets only 3; Apple devices only 2.5.

Portable echo machine price: the questions I hear most

How much does a portable echocardiogram machine cost?

Suresult PD1, PD2, CD2 and D3Ultra include PW, subscription-free ownership and door-to-door delivery with tax and duties paid. October 9, 2026 rival prices: Butterfly iQ3 $4,319 in year one; Philips Lumify S4-1 $12,027.79 (US distributor list); Vave Phased $3,500 (color-only echo).

What is the best portable echocardiography machine?

My pick for 2026 is the Suresult PD2, a dedicated phased array with PW and CW Doppler and no membership. For the full Doppler and AI set, quote the EchoNous Kosmos; for AI ejection fraction included in the price, the Exo Iris.

Do handheld echo devices need a subscription?

Butterfly requires Advanced for PW ($420/year or $1,500 for five years); Clarius requires Essentials ($695/year or $2,500 once). GE, EchoNous, Philips, Exo, Mindray and Suresult include PW in the device or package price. Vave Phased provides B-mode, M-mode and color.

Which handheld echo devices have CW Doppler?

Two in this comparison: the EchoNous Kosmos with its Torso-One probe and the Suresult PD2. CW records the high-velocity jets of aortic stenosis and tricuspid regurgitation, which alias on pulsed-wave Doppler.

Which handheld echo devices calculate ejection fraction automatically?

The EchoNous Kosmos and the Exo Iris include it. GE adds AutoEF to the Vscan Air SL through a $500-a-year subscription, and Clarius offers EF AI with its membership or a one-time license. Suresult probes calculate EF from the M-mode LV diameters.

What do the other brands’ handheld echo devices cost?

October 9, 2026: Vave $3,500; GE $4,999; Butterfly iQ3 $3,899 plus Advanced; Clarius PAL HD3 $5,395 (PA HD3 $3,795) plus Essentials; Exo $5,499; Mindray i3P from $6,699; Kosmos from $7.7K; Lumify S4-1 $12,027.79 distributor list.

How much does a cart or laptop echo machine cost?

Cart and laptop echo systems (GE Vivid iq and Venue, Philips CX50 and Affiniti, Mindray TE7 and M9, Sonosite PX and LX) sell by itemized configuration quote. Every handheld on this page has a published store, list or package price.

Is a handheld echo device enough for a full echocardiogram?

It answers the focused questions: effusion, left-ventricular function, chamber size and volume status. With CW Doppler, the Kosmos and the PD2 also measure valve gradients. Strain, 3D and the full departmental report run on a cart system.

What does the Suresult checkout price include?

Door-to-door delivery with tax and duties paid, a free-for-life app with unlimited scans, a two-year warranty and a 30-day trial, on every Suresult probe in this comparison.

Cómo se elaboró esta página

Metodología

Each maker gets one ranked slot, represented by its highest-scoring model; sibling models sit inside that card with their own prices.

I read every price, plan, specification and warranty term from the maker’s own store, price page, product page, user guide or FDA 510(k) summary on October 9, 2026, and the Suresult figures from its product pages the same day. Where a maker sells by quote, the entry says so and gives the figure that is public: EchoNous’s package anchors, and for the Philips Lumify S4-1 the list price of US distributor Penn Care, labeled as a distributor price.

First-year echo cost is the hardware plus whatever membership unlocks PW Doppler, on the lowest first-year route; five-year cost is the cheapest published route that keeps that software for five years, the same arithmetic as my total-cost-of-ownership guide.
