  1. Band fit for shallow imaging. The published frequency range and what it genuinely resolves — a linear probe earns its place at 10 MHz and above, and the roster spans 7.5/10 MHz to 18/24 MHz. Where two probes share a band, published array density breaks the tie: more elements across an equal aperture means a smaller nominal element pitch, which is an architectural fact rather than a promise about any particular image.
  2. Depth coverage and focus behavior. Published scanning depth across the band; a shallow specialist and a deep-reaching workhorse are different tools, and the ranking says which is which.
  3. Software and analysis toolset. What ships with the probe for linear-probe jobs — measurement packages, needle assistance, and skin-analysis tooling where the maker publishes it — priced as published.
  4. Total cost to own. The displayed price plus every unavoidable fee. A mandatory membership is part of the price; a free-software policy is part of the value. No number is carried over from memory — all read August 14, 2026.

Appareil locomoteurTendons, ligaments, joints and muscle sit from just under the skin down to several centimetres, so the band has to reach without giving up near-field detail. The Suresult L14Pro at 10/14 MHz to 80 mm is the natural fit; the Clarius L15 HD3 at 5–15 MHz to 7 cm serves the same work inside its own ecosystem, and for the deepest musculoskeletal or peri-surgical work the Clarius L7 HD3 reaches 15 cm. First place goes to the probe that gives up the least. Its 256-element array is one of only three in this comparison; among the models whose element counts their makers publish, the rest list 192. Those extra elements sample the same 25 mm aperture more densely, which is a hardware difference rather than a promise about any particular image. The 16/20 MHz band sits high enough to resolve dermis, filler planes and superficial vessels, and the published depth still runs to 40 mm — level with the Clarius L20 HD3 ranked below it and a full centimetre and a half beyond the L24Pro. That combination is why it takes first place on balance rather than on any single criterion: the L24Pro leads the roster outright on band, and the Clarius matches this depth, but no other entry holds a high band, this depth, a 256-element array and no mandatory plan at once.

Criterion three is where the gap widens. The probe ships with the full Doppler set — colour, power and pulsed wave alongside B and M-mode — plus flip, grid, in-plane and out-of-plane puncture guides and needle enhancement, and the FacialAI skin-analysis toolset is included for the first year of ownership under the published offer. Second place, and the strongest case against my pick. Clarius publishes the widest single-array band in this comparison: 8–20 MHz in one probe, where the Suresult arrays publish two discrete frequencies. In practice that range means one scanner covers superficial vascular work at the low end and dermal detail at the high end without a probe change, and the HD3 platform’s tuning behind it is genuinely good. The company also publishes its element count and beamformer count openly, which not every maker on this page does.

What keeps it out of first is arithmetic that Clarius states plainly in its own checkout. The $5,395 scanner cannot be bought alone: the store page reads “Pay $5,395 for scanner + $695 per year for essentials,” and the billing dropdown offers only annual, three-year or one-time Essentials variants — there is no opt-out. Counted honestly under criterion four, year one is $6,090 against the L20Pro’s single checkout price, and the meter keeps running: five years on the annual plan totals $8,870, or $7,895 if you take the $2,500 one-time Essentials licence at the outset. Criterion two is the other constraint: maximum published depth is 4 cm, against 40 mm on my pick, so the extra spend does not buy extra reach.

Nothing else in this comparison reaches 24 MHz except the same hardware wearing the TodoPocus badge at rank eight. That single fact decides where the L24Pro belongs: on criterion one it is the outright leader for the shallowest work — epidermis and dermis, the nail unit, superficial vessels, the first few millimetres where the lower-band probes on this page are working at the edge of their published range. Pair that band with a 256-element array and the near field is the most densely sampled of anything here.

It ranks third rather than first because criterion two exists. Published depth steps stop at 25 mm, which is the narrowest range on this page by some distance — roughly a third of what the L14Pro reads and well short of my pick’s 40 mm. A probe that cannot see past two and a half centimetres is a specialist instrument, and buying it as a clinic’s only linear head is a mistake I would rather you avoid. This is the probe I would hand to a musculoskeletal or vascular clinician without hesitation. Its published 80 mm depth is the deepest of any Suresult Pro array and twice what my top pick reads, which is the difference between imaging a superficial tendon and following it to its insertion, or between a forearm vein and a deeper brachial target. The band sits at 10/14 MHz — low enough to reach, high enough that tendon fibrils and vessel walls still resolve cleanly — and it carries the same 256-element array as the two probes ranked above it, which no competitor in this comparison matches at any price.

It ranks fourth on criterion one alone: 14 MHz cannot resolve the dermal detail that 20 and 24 MHz can, so for skin-layer and filler-plane work the two Pro arrays above it are the right instruments. For everything below the dermis, that ordering inverts — and if your week is mostly shoulders, knees and vascular access rather than faces, buy this one and ignore the ranking above it. The L15 HD3 is the general-purpose linear probe in the Clarius line, and on criterion two it is genuinely strong: 7 cm of published depth beats the three probes ranked above it, though it still sits 10 mm short of the L14Pro directly above, which makes it a real musculoskeletal instrument rather than a dermal specialist. The 5–15 MHz range is the familiar workhorse band, and the platform’s software and education material around it are among the better ones in this market.

Two things hold it at fifth. Its top band stops at 15 MHz, so the shallow detail the four probes above it deliver is simply not available here — and criterion one is the first criterion for a reason on a page about linear probes. Then the cost structure repeats: the store states “Pay $3,795 for scanner + $695 per year for essentials,” with no scanner-only option in the dropdown, so the honest first-year figure is $4,490. The deepest-reaching linear array in this comparison, and the reason a depth-first buyer should look past the top of this ranking. Clarius publishes a 15 cm maximum depth on the L7 against 8 cm for the GE linear side and 100 mm for the L10H — that is the difference between a linear probe that stops at the muscle layer and one that follows a structure as far as a linear format usefully can. Clarius publishes a 38 mm field of view for it — its own term, not directly comparable with Suresult’s scan length or GE’s lens footprint — and the specification sheet is as open as the rest of the Clarius line.

Criterion one is what places it sixth: 13 MHz is a mid band, so the dermal and filler-plane detail the five probes above it deliver is not on offer. The value pick, and the answer to a question I get often: what does dropping from 256 elements to 192 actually cost you? Here it is measurable, because the L20 holds the same 16/20 MHz band and the same 10–40 mm depth as the probe ranked first — the array density is the difference, and so is $930 once the automatic 7% has come off both at checkout. These two are listed together, and honestly: TodoPocus is a sister brand selling the same Suresult-built hardware, identical apart from the outer housing and the branding on it. They earn a place here because they are a genuine purchasing route with their own published terms — a three-year warranty as standard, worldwide delivery with duties covered — and a buyer comparing linear probes will meet them. What they are not is an independent alternative, and treating them as one would be dishonest.

On the criteria, the imaging discussion is the same discussion as the Suresult entries above — the published bands and depths match model for model — so what actually differs is the commercial package: a longer standard warranty here, against Suresult’s own published policy set and the FacialAI first-year inclusion there. I deliberately print no element count for these two: the two brands’ pages publish different figures for the same hardware, and rather than arbitrate that in my own words I would send you to each maker’s specification page and let them speak for themselves.

The Vscan Air SL answers a question none of the dedicated probes above it can: what if you need shallow imaging and cardiac or abdominal depth from the same handle? It is a genuine dual-head instrument, GE publishes its full specification openly in a downloadable data sheet, and the three-year warranty is stated on the product page alongside the price — a level of published detail this market does not always offer.

On a linear-probe ranking, though, criterion one is decisive and unkind. The linear side runs 3–12 MHz with a centre frequency of 7.7 MHz — a 12 MHz ceiling, matched by the Lumify and above only the L10H’s 10 MHz. For dermal, filler-plane or fine small-parts work that ceiling is a real limit, and every dedicated probe ranked above it resolves shallow structure more finely. Its 8 cm depth and the 40 mm lens are strong for vascular and musculoskeletal work, and if versatility across body regions matters more to you than top-band detail, this is the honest choice on this page. If it does not, you are paying $4,999 for a sector head you may rarely use.

The L12-4 is a capable linear transducer inside a platform many hospitals already run, and its published 12 cm depth is second only to the Clarius L7’s 15 cm on this page — useful when a linear head has to follow something further than usual. Philips publishes a proper specification for it, and the applications list is broad and credible.

It ranks tenth on criterion four, and the reason is narrow: there is no US price to evaluate. I checked the current US Lumify pages on August 14, 2026 and found only sales-inquiry gates; the old catalogue URL for this transducer now redirects away. Credit where it is due on the fee model, though — those same pages state plainly that there are no subscriptions and that buying outright includes all software and features, which is a better ownership story than either Clarius entry offers. The figures circulating in the market come from resellers, not from Philips, and I will not present a reseller’s range as a manufacturer’s price. Last place on a ranking led by band fit, and yet the probe I would choose first for one specific job. Its 7.5/10 MHz array is the lowest band here, which is exactly why criterion one puts it eleventh — shallow dermal detail is not what this instrument is for. What it publishes instead is a 40 mm scan length, the deepest reach of any Suresult linear here at 100 mm, and visualized needle guidance that no other probe in this comparison lists. GE describes its linear side as a 40 × 7 mm lens footprint, which is a differently defined measurement and not directly comparable; what is not shared either way is the needle tooling.

For vascular access and needle work, that combination is worth more than frequency. A wider contact face keeps the vessel and the advancing needle in one image, the depth covers targets a 25 mm scan length would lose, and the guidance tooling is included rather than optional. At the lowest displayed price in this ranking, with no mandatory plan, it is the sensible first linear probe for a practice whose imaging is procedural rather than diagnostic-cosmetic.

What is a linear ultrasound probe, and when is it the wrong choice?

A linear probe carries its piezoelectric elements in a straight row, producing a rectangular image at high frequency — excellent detail in the first few centimetres, limited penetration beyond that. It is the right transducer for skin, tendons, vessels, thyroid, superficial nodes and needle guidance, and the wrong one for abdominal, obstetric or cardiac imaging, which need a convex or phased head instead. Why is the Butterfly iQ3 not in this ranking?

Because it is not a dedicated linear array. The iQ3 uses a single on-chip semiconductor transducer that synthesizes linear, curved and phased imaging formats from one head, which is an impressive engineering answer to a different question — versatility rather than shallow resolution. Ranking it against purpose-built linear arrays on a linear-array criterion would flatter neither side. It appears in my overall handheld ranking, where its actual argument makes sense.

Is a higher frequency always better?

No, and this is the most expensive mistake in the category. Frequency and penetration trade against each other: the 18/24 MHz array that resolves dermal layers beautifully stops at 25 mm, while the 7.5/10 MHz probe that reads to 100 mm cannot show you the same skin detail. Buy for the depth your daily structures actually live at, then take the highest band that still reaches it.

What does a linear transducer cost in 2026?

On the prices I read on August 14, 2026, the honest range in this comparison runs from the Suresult L10H at the low end to the Clarius L20 HD3 at $5,395 before its mandatory membership, with the Philips Lumify L12-4 publishing no US price at all. Two figures deserve care: Clarius scanner prices exclude an Essentials membership that cannot be removed at checkout, and any reseller range quoted for Lumify is a reseller’s number, not the manufacturer’s — Philips itself states that an outright purchase carries no subscription. Does element count matter more than frequency?

They answer different questions. Frequency sets how fine the detail can be at a given depth; element count sets how densely that detail is sampled across the footprint. Three probes here publish 256 elements; among the others whose makers publish a count, the figure is 192. Element count alone does not settle resolution — frequency, aperture, pitch, channel architecture and beamforming all contribute — so read it as one hardware fact among several. If you are choosing between two probes with the same band, take the denser array.

Can an individual clinician buy one of these directly?

Buyability is the sixth criterion on this page, so the ranking does weigh it — one line per device on whether a clinician can actually order it today. Some makers here sell online at a published price, some restrict purchase to verified providers, and one publishes no price at all.
